Traill County was established 12 Jan 1875 and organized 23 Feb 1875. The first county seat was Goose River which changed its name in Aug 1875 to Caledonia. The county seat was moved in 1896 to Hillsboro to be more centrally located. The county was named for Walter John Strickland Traill (1847-1938), a Canadian who was employed by Hudson Bay and was a prominent citizen during the early days of the county. Area - 861 square miles.
