PETERSBURG IN 1905

By J. R, "Brick" Smith

"As the editor of the Press thought it might be of some interest to part of his readers, if' he ran a
few articles about Petersburg soon after the turn of the century, he has agreed to print some of
this writer's offerings.

My parents and myself moved into Petersburg, from northwest of Elgin, with all our earthly possessions in a lumber wagon in 1905. After staying with my grandfather, J. D. Smith, who ran a restaurant and the hotel, a few weeks, we moved into the last house west on Main Street, which is still the last house west and which I still own.

The world of a small boy is limited. However, to the best of my memory I will describe Petersburg as it was then."
... remains of an old brick yard at the northwest corner of town. ... In the middle of the main square, was the old pump house. ...wooden sidewalks ... hitching posts ...."no water system such as there is now, so every home had a pump or a windmill, and
there was no home without a little house in the rear."
"... phonographs ... were a luxury ... Movies were unknown and the only phone was in a booth in Mike Cavanaugh's drug store."... Tony Morisse had the only car in the country. ... only cement walks that I can remember were around the school house...."

"Beginning at the east end of the business section on the north side, ...blacksmith shop, ... Mr. Berkenkoetter's shoe repair shop ... a small frame building which served as a cream buying
station ... Andre's Store...
