Mr. Jones was the cemetery sexton and there was only one set of records. His home burned down and the records burned with it. It has been said that the first year settlers arrived in the St. Helena area they lived in caves on the east and south of the current cemetery the first winter. Later they built homes in the area. Indians contracted some White man's disease and died. There are Native Americans buried on the east side of the cemetery. James Nielsen compiled a cemetery list in 1965. Mr. Nielsen was very concerned that the rumor that was published in an early Cedar County History Book which school teachers and students contributed to said that the first cemetery of St. Helena was on an island in the river. That is not true. The cemetery then is where it is now. He noted that Mrs. Henry Felber had an oak slab tombstone. Her husband Henry was proprietor of Felber House, which was later known as Felber Tavern. Jacob Felber and wife, who died 1898 and 1897 respectively, were the great-grandparents of the proprietor of Felber Drug of Laurel NE during the 1960’s and 70’s. Also noted that Fred Reifert’s wife dated death dated 1882. Her husband was coroner and undertaker and lived in the city of St. Helena. The six Heckt children's birth and death dates were lost when vandals destroyed the footstones on their grave sites. These children were sons and daughters of Theo and Catherine Heckt. These graves set at the top of the hill in the center of the cemetery surrounded by a wrought iron fence. Loren and Ruth Bender, the people of St. Helena and the Jones family need to be commended on their efforts to save the cemetery from complete destruction. A fence has been erected around the cemetery and efforts have been made to spruce up it’s general appearance. Ralph “Red” Jones was the last person to buried in this cemetery. On the gate to the cemetery each pillar has a plaque. One says St. Helena Cemetery and the other says In Loving Memory of Ralph A. Jones. Inside the cemetery to the north side is a beautiful monument and flagpole. One plaque says “Frances Jones, postmaster 41 years, St. Helena NE". On the lower level is a plaque that says: Ralph A Jones PFC US Army WW II Jan. 21, 1918 - Sept. 9, 1991. This list was made possible by the hard work of Marlys Rice of Concord NE. 68728, who initially recorded these records on April 1, 1987. There are very, very, few double stones; because of the age of tombstones they are single tombstones.
