HELENA--The Immaculate Conception Catholic church at St. Helena will observe its diamond jubilee with an all day celebration here next Wednesday, October 4. The present parish was established in 1869 with its first resident pastor, although in 1863 members of the congregation had constructed the first church in Cedar county. Impressive ceremonies, followed by a reunion and picnic, will commemorate the event. The Most Rev. James H. Ryan, Bishop of Omaha, will preside at the jubilee mass at 10 a.m., and preach the sermon. The Rt. Rev. Nicholas H. Wegner, chancellor of the Omaha diocese, will be celebrant of the mass. Assisting Msgr. Wegner will be Rev. John Mines of Pierce as deacon; Rev. Charles Knippen of St. James as sub-deacon; Rev. Otto Zillig of Menominee as master of ceremonies, Rev. Anthony Kluthe of Bow Valley and Rev. Peter Vanderlaan of Fordyce will be chaplains of the bishop. After the church ceremonies, dinner will be served to the visiting clergy and public at noon. A ball game and other amusements are scheduled for the day and a dance in the evening. The parish was organized by the early settlers of Cedar county and a priest from the vicinity of Jackson served the community as a mission for some time. A permanent parish was formed October 9, 1869 and Rev. Ferdinand Lechleitner became the first pastor. Rev. Joseph T. Bernauer is the present pastor. The present impressive church was erected in 1897 during the administration of Rev. Henry Schoof. When the village of St. Helena was established in 1868 there were only three Catholic churches in the territory of Nebraska--at Omaha, Nebraska and near Jackson. The first mass said in Cedar county was in the log home of Gerhard Arendt in 1862. In 1863, a group of Catholics built the first church in the county, a log structure. A frame addition was added in 1866 and a pastorial residence was built in 1866. The first Catholic school was started at St. Helena in 1888. SEPTEMBER 28, 1944 CEDAR COUNTY NEWS
