Ashby, aged 76, one of Magnet’s oldest citizens was buried there last Sunday. “Dad” Ashby, as he was known to Magnet citizens, was one of the pioneers of the town and owned several buildings there. He was quite a character and known over Cedar County to a considerable extent. J.H. was born on March 19, 1840 in Indiana to Hankerson and Peggy (Frammel) Ashby. On June 12th, 1867 he was united in marriage to Martha J. Saunders. To them were born seven children, five of who are livings, Fred, Hal, Mrs. Cora Shaw, Mrs. Nell Sinkey and Mrs. Esther Rohr. Martha was killed in an automobile accident on June 19, 1914. In 1916 he married Rachel Turney Black, the widow of Michael Black. Mr. Ashby passed away on October 4, 1917.
