Steele, a Well Known Mail Carrier Succumbs to Tuberculosis Robert B. Steele died of tuberculosis at his home in this city Monday, August 21st aged about 70 years. the deceased was born in Ohio, immigrated to Iowa, where he married Hattie Sage forty-six years ago and have remained here ever since. For about six years, Mr. Steele farmed near the city; then he entered the service of the government as a rural mail carrier, having carried mail from this city over eleven years. Last year his health became so poor that he had to resign his position and his son Elmer has been covering his route since. He was a veteran of the Grand Army of the Republic, having served through the entire war of the Rebellion in Battery G of the Third Iowa Artillery. He leaves a wife and seven children George, Bert, Elmer and Frank Steele, H.R. Steel of Winthrop, Washington, Mrs. Frank McLean of the same place and Mrs. L.A. Oliver of Yankton, SD. The funeral was held at the home on Wednesday and was conducted by Rev. M. Wood of the Baptist Church, of which the deceased is a member. The burial service was conducted by the Grand Army Post, and rural mail carriers of the city acted as pall bearers. Relatives in attendance at the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. E A Sage, George and Minnie Sage, Frank Remington, Mr. and Mrs. George Steele, Jessie and Roy Steele, Mr and Mrs. Bert Steele, Mr. and Mrs. Jas. Kelley and Mrs. Sam Martin all of Crofton, Mr. and Mrs. L A Oliver, Howard Oliver, Bertha Simpson, and Mr. and Mrs. Frank Sage of Yankton, SD. Mrs. Steele and Hattie Boyd went to Yankton this morning with Mr. and Mrs. L.A. Oliver, at whose home, Mrs. Steele's mother, Mrs. Sarah Jane Sage, lies critically ill.
