Permission granted by Rob Dump, Editor, Cedar County News ====================================================================== Cedar County News 5/16/1929 Joe Wrede Dies Friday Morning St. Helena Resident for over 40 years buried Monday Morning Joe Wrede 72, woho came to St. Helena over 40 years ago, died at his home Friday morning at 10:00 o’clock following serious illness for three days due to heart disease. Mr. Wrede, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Wrede, was born July 20, 1857 in Westphalia, Germany, about twenty miles from the birthplace and boyhood home of John Tigges of Fordyce. However, the two men never met until after coming to Cedar county. Mr. Wrede married Miss Pauline Jokel in Berlin in 1882, and in 1885 they came to America settling first at Yankton and then going to Omaha for a short time where Mr. Wrede was employed as a brewmaster. He came to St. Helena to live. After farming a short time he helped Anton Thielke, built the last brewery there, and later went into business with Mr. Thielke, who passed away about seven years ago. About 32 years ago, Mr. and Mrs. Wrede and family went to Melrose, MN where they remained for seven years. When they returned he purchased the brewery from Mr. Thielke and continued to run it until prohibition. Mr Wrede was the last brewer in Cedar county. After prohibition the family moved to their present farm. Mr. Wrede is survived by his wife and three children, Mrs. Joe Schmidt, Mrs. Hugo Boehmer, and Frank Wrede, all near St. Helena. He also leaves one sister, Mrs. Frank Wiepen in St. Helena and two sisters in Germany. Funeral services were held at 10:00 A M Monday Morning at St. Helena, with Fr. Startman in charge. Pall bearers were Frank Heine, Louis Rolling, Joe Becker, Henry Becker, Loe Boehmer, and Leo Backman. Burial was at St. Helena. Mrs. John Wrede a sister in law from Omaha, was present for the services.
