Will Stephenson left yesterday for Sioux City and from there will probably return to Canada. He spent a pleasant vacation with his parents and friends here. The city council has passed a resolution giving $2 to the first team at the hose house after the alarm of fire is given, to haul the hose cart, and $1.50 to second team to haul the hook and ladder wagon. Mrs. T.F. Ziegler entertained a number of friends at a social high- five party last Thursday evening in honor of her sister Miss Edna Saunders of Omaha. Delightful refreshments were served and all present enjoyed a pleasant evening. On New Year's eve the Baird home was the scene of youthful gaiety. A number of young friends of Miss Maggie Baird gathered there by invitation and proceeded to enjoy themselves after the most approved manner. The evening was spent in playing games in which everyone took lively interest. Choice refreshments were served. All in all it was one of the most pleasant affairs that has occured in Hartington for this crowd of young people. Those present were Misses Anna Amundson, Effie Yager, Blanch Stephenson, Maud Butler, Lottie Pollock, Edna Gable, Nellie and Bertha Bridenbaugh, Messrs Carl Van Dorn, John Engelman, James Robinson, Chas. Eby, Robert Suing, George Nelson, Wm. Lemon, and Thomas Watson. On New Year's eve thieves broke into the basement of Lubeley's hardware store and entered the store from the cellar, taking a few knives and rings. A window in the rear of Morris and Gould's hardware store was also broken. Mr. and Mrs. A.M. Gooding entertained a large party at cards Monday evening. E.L. Dimick succeeded in progressing the greatest number of times and received first prize. Jay Pierce sought consolation with "yellow kid." The floral decorations were roses, carnations and ferns. Choice refreshments were served. All present felt that the Twentieth Century had certainly commenced in a delightful manner. In honor of Miss Ella Smith and Miss Olive Felber, Mrs. B. Ready entertained a number of their friends at cards last Monday evening. Those present were: Misses Blanche and Pauline Suing, Ethel Robinson, Bess Mason, Olga Gable, Helen Stephenson, Lila Smith and Olive Felber; Messrs Little, Kolb, Bartlett, Robinson, David and Frank Ewing. Miss Gable secured first prize and Robt. Bartlett the consolation. Choice refreshments were served.
