In fact, the grade is completed at present, except for the placing of the big rocks along the river's edge to protect the grade in time of high water. The sand pump, which has done such faithful work on the grade finished up with its labors Tuesday. It has been eating its way back toward the main channel of the river for several days and at the completion of the job, it started on its way for the Dakota side in dead earnest. Nothing in the condition of the river will prevent it from reaching Dakota safely, and the engines which have been used on the grade can also be brought back without much trouble from ice. Early in the week, only a very little dirt had to be hauled for covering on the grade, and some clay had to be put on the end nearest the river. All this should be easily finished by the latter part of the week. The work of "hooking up" the grade to pier 8 of the bridge has also been progressing nicely, large rocks being piled around the pedastals. Simultaneously with the finishing of the grade, the last of the concrete work on the sub-structure of the bridge was also completed. This consisted of putting the final cappings on the pedastals on this side of the river. Due to the slush ice which as been running in the river, Captain Giesler has been forced to open the draw in the pontoon bridge to let the ice go thru. AS this compelled motorists to go around by way of Sioux City, for the boat B.A. Douglas was put into commission Monday, and will continue to operate at the bridge as long as the river conditions permit.
