Very few people are living today who actually saw that paper printed, but Fritz Schaller of Fordyce is one of them. According to Mr. Schaller, the first paper to be published in the county was printed at St. Helena in 1873 or 1874. It was called the Cedar County Bulletin, and was published by C.W. Chandler. The building in which it was printed was only 12 by 16 feet in size, and it is still standing, being occupied by George Hausman. Compared with the modern newspapers, it wasn't much of a publication, and the method of printing it differed widely from present day methods, as it was printed on a hand press. In telling of the history of that paper, Mr. Schaller also traced up the family tree of the Cedar county News. The first paper in the county he says was the Cedar County Bulletin. Later its name was changed to the Advocate, then the Nonpariel, and finally to the News. Mr. Chandler, the first publisher, sold out his business after it was started, and went to Vermillion, where he went into the hotel business. Mr. Shaller, who has been a resident of Cedar county since 1872, left this week for Tucson, Arizona, where he exepcts to make his home. He was accompanied by his son, E.M. Schaller and family, who are also going to Tucson because of Mr. Schaller's health. F.M. Schaller has been the station agent at Fordyce for twelve years but has not been able to work for the past ten years because of ill health.
