The fifteen porkers turned up missing from the feed yards in Hartington one morning and every indication was that they had been stolen. George being a good sport decided not to say anything about the loss of his hogs, but figured he would just keep his eyes open and see if he could get any trace of them. As the days went by the hogs had apparently vanished into think air as not a trace of them could be found. Then a farmer brought some more hogs to town to sell them to George and in using the scales at the yard, one of the planks of the scales was broken. In going to repair it, George happened to notice a hog down under the scales, and great light dawned on him. Ripping off the other boards of the scales, George found his fifteen hogs all right, three of them dead and the others so think that they looked like “razorbacks” The hogs had crawled down under the scales thru a hole on the one side, and then were unable to get out again, as the hole was higher than they could climb. Twelve of the happiest hogs in Cedar county greeted George as he opened up the scales, for they were getting rather weary of their close quarters and were mighty glad to get out.
