LAURA LAWSON OF WYNOT WILL UNVEIL MONUMENT Mrs. Laura Lawson of Wynot, only living child of Henson Wiseman will unveil the monument erected in honor of the memory of the Wiseman children who were massacred by the Indians in 1863 and of the parents who helped to build up the county. The dedicatory services will begin at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon four and one half miles northeast of Wynot, just below the bluff. Addison E. Sheldon, secretary of the Nebraska Historical Society of Lincoln will deliver the address. Mr. Sheldon is an authority on the early development of the state and will have a real message to give. Invocation will be asked by Rev. M.E. Coltrane of Wynot. Mrs. J.G. Campbell president of the country club of Wynot thru whose leadership the monument has been secured, will give a short address of welcome. Short talks will also be given by George Beste of Hartington, S.D. Osthant and Rev. D.M. McIntosh. There will be special musical numbers and two bands will furnish several concerts during the afternoon and evening. Mrs. Campbell first conceived the idea of erecting a monument on the spot where the Wiseman children were massacred in 1924. The other members of the country club eagerly took up the task and have worked earnestly since. Mrs. G.W. Butler is vice-president of the organization, Mrs. George Gowery is secretary, and Mrs. R.H. Baugous, treasurer. The club was organized in 1921 and Mrs. Campbell has been president since its organization. The land on which the monument has been placed was doaned for that purpose by Theodore Beste of Hartington. Mr. Beste was a pioneer resident of Brookey Bottom with the Wiseman family and was a personal friend for many years. Later he served the county very ably as county commissioner. The monument cost $600, half of which was raised by the club women and the other half by subscriptions. It is chisled out of gray marble and has a rough surface except the face on which the names of the massacred children and their parents will be inscribed. This memorial will mark the spot where in the summer of 1863 five of the children of Mr. and Mrs. Henson Wiseman were massacred while the mother was in Yankton for supplies and Mr. Wiseman was with the US army on the Dakota Frontier. The oldest son, John, was wearing the Blue in the Union army in the south. It was to have been his honor to unveil the monument, but death claimed him about two months ago. A sister, Mrs. Laura Lawson of Wynot born after the tragedy, will now be given the honor. Many folks from all over the county and the surrounding territory as well plan to attend the services Sunday afternoon. For those who wish to picnic for the day there are many lovely spots in the vacinity where the day may be enjoyably spent.
