Backman of Wynot was further honored by his children and grandchildren on the occasion of his 85th birthday Sunday. The Celebration took place at the farm of his son Ed south of Wynot, where he makes his home. The ten children were present for the occasion as well as a majority of 45 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. A banquet was served at noon and the remainder of the day was spent in visiting. Pictures of two of the three four-generation groups were taken during the afternoon. One of the groups has Mr. Backman at its head followed by his daughter Mrs. Henry Klug and his grandson, Vincent Klug and his great-grandson, Donald Klug. A second includes Mr. Backman, Mrs. Alvin Rosenbach, Mrs. Jack Conley and Celestine Conley. The third comprises Mr. Backman, Mrs. Henry Klug, Leander Klug and Claude Klug. Mr. Backman was born at Oldenburg, Germany on June 18, 1884. (1848) He came to America when he was 16 years old, residing at Dubuque, Iowa where he married Miss Marie Rupiper, who died in 1926 (1924). He homesteaded at Menominee, on what is now the Theodore Kleinschmit farm and continued farming there for many years. Mr. Backman was active in the work of Menominee Catholic parish. His ten children as follows are: Mrs. A.T. Duman, and Mrs. Pauline Wagers of Sioux City, Mrs. Henry Klug of St. Helena; Mrs. Alvin Rosenbach, Fremont, Mrs. Andrew Faulk, east of Hartington, Mrs. Bruno Pinkelman, Obert, Ed and Louis of Wynot, Jake, Hartington, and Barney, southwest of Hartington.
