BREWERS OBSERVE GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY WYNOT COUPLE HONORED BY FRIENDS AND RELATIVES SUNDAY Wynot - Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Brewer observed their golden wedding anniversary Sunday when they entertained a group of relatives and friends at their home at a turkey and goose dinner. The day was spent in visiting and pictures were taken. A mock wedding also ensued much merriment. The house was decorated with gold crepe paper as were dinner tables. Yellow chrysanthemums were also used in the decorations. A wedding cake centered each of two tables, they were baked by the two daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Brewer, Mrs. P.A. Watson of Sioux city and Mrs. Bernice Deuschle of Yankton, while the preparations at the home were made by the daughter-in-law, Mrs. Marvin Brewer. Mr. and Mrs. Brewer received many beautiful gifts from their children and friends. Thomas Brewer, better known as "Cal", and Mary Penticoff were married Dec. 19, 1887 at Yankton by Rev. Dan Bradley. They were attended by Kate Brewer, now Mrs. Wilbur of Ponca, and Peter Keegan, now deceased. They drove to Yankton with a team and a spring wagon and Mrs. Brewer recalls that in crossing the river on the ice on the return trip they broke through the ice and the horses were in water up to their knees. Mr. and Mrs. Brewer are both members of the Golden Circle of Cedar County Pioneers. Mr. Brewer has spent 63 years of his 73 years in this community, and Mrs. Brewer has lived here since her birth 67 years ago with the exception of one year. Mr. Brewer was born in Poweskiek County, Iowa, Dec. 30, 1864. He came to Nebraska with his parents in 1870 and the family lived near Ponca for about four years before coming to Cedar county and settling in the St. James community. Mr. Brewer recalls that during the grasshopper plague of the 1880's his family had "johhny cake and sorghum" as their bill of fare for nearly three years as the sugar cane was the one crop the hoppers did not eat. Mrs. Brewer was born just east of St. James April 21, 1870. The couple have two daughters and three sons, all of whom were home for the golden wedding with the exception of one son, Lloyd, who lives in Cheney, Washington. They also have seven grandchildren and one great grandchild. Among relatives and friends present for the golden wedding celebration on Sunday were Mrs. P.A. Watson and son Ralph, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Watson of Sioux City, Mrs. Bernice Deuschle, Mr. and Mrs. Delmer Deuschle and daughter Marilyn, Mr. and Mrs. Louis Brewer and Horace Blair all of Yankton, Mr. and Mrs. A.B.
