Permission granted by: Rob Dump, Editor, Cedar County News ====================================================================== When You and I Were Young News from The Cedar County News in Bygone Days One Year Ago Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Wyant and their small daughter, Karen, escaped with bruises and minor injuries when their auto overturned on the highway seven miles south of here when it struck an icy spot. The auto was badly damaged. Herman Frerichs of Coleridge was re-elected chairman of the Cedar County Farm Bureau, C.H. Koenig of Hartington was re-elected vice chairman and Glen R. Miller of Hartington was re-elected secretary. Fire, believed to have been started by a spark from a chimney in the building, destroyed the awning in front of the Hartington creamery building. William Gienapp (?) of Coleridge sold his cafe business and equipment to Kathryn and Emma Klet. Lawrence Rossiter, Hartington insurance agent, qualified for membership in the General American Life Insurance Co., "Leadership Club" for 1943. The wedding of Miss Shirley Mae Blatchford, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Blatchford, and Emory Adair Bensen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Bensen, was solemnized at the Zion Lutheran church at Maskell. Mr. and Mrs. H.N. Wallace of Coleridge celebrated their 50th wedding anniversay at their home. Deaths: Mrs. Mary Johnston, Omaha; John Jansen, Fordyce; John Krause, Los Angeles, formerly of Hartington. Ten Years Ago LaVerne Abts narrowly escaped serious injuries in a coasting accdient here. Riding down hill on a sled, he swerved to miss an approaching automovbile and crashed into another sled. The runners of the sled cut a deep gash in his throat, very near the jugular vein. The small child of Mr. and Mrs. Matt Goeden swallowed an open safty pin last week. The baby was taken to Yankton but suffered no ill effects. About $11 in cash was taken from the Hartington residence of John Herfkens while the family was attending the show. Entrance to the house was evidently gained by use of a skeleton key. Raymond Hoesing, who is employed in the Fordyce garage, was burned about the face and chest when he started to light a fire in the garage. He poured gasoline on coals by mistake and it immediately ignited. Ed Wuebben built a service station at St. Helena on the corner diagonally across the road from the Catholic church. The building was constructed from lumber taken from the old Wynot railroad roundhouse. Deaths: Rev. Victor End (?), Fordyce; Mrs. Walter Vanderbilt, Randolph; Mrs. Willis Cooper, Randolph. Twenty Year Ago Edith Havens, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E.A. Havens of Hartington, became the bride of Henry Slacker of Pawnee, in Sioux City. (NOTE: Remainder of article cut off.)
