The fire was confined to the basement and the floor, but the interior of the building was damaged considerably by water and smoke. At first the fire and dense smoke kept the firemen from fighting the blaze directly and they poured water on the floor from above to hold down the fire. It was feared that the fire might spread to the rest of the buildings in the block and the Hartington Fire Department was called to help in fighting the fire. The two departments were able to bring the fire udner control in short order. Martin Wuebben, owner of the cafe, told a News reporter that he was unable to make any estimates as to the damage until the smoke could be cleared from the building and a through examination made. He said that he believed he had insurance enough to cover most of the damage. In the basement where fire damage was the most severe, was a room used as a meeting place by the Wynot Community Club and the village board. There were also some pool tables in a room in the basement.
