Running the motor car for warmth while cleaning his car in the closed 
basemen garage under the Bange and Lee furniture store in Hartington 
Thursday afternoon, A E Lee narrowly escaped death by poison gas when 
he was found unconscious by Mrs. Mary Bange, partner in the business, 
who went to investigate his continued absence.

With military honors befitting the burial of Hartington’s last civil 
war soldier, funeral services for Robert Sterling St. Who ran away 
from home at 16 to join the Northern Army, faked his name and age to 
enlist and then “deserted” one company to get into the fighting, were 
held Sunday afternoon at the city auditorium
