34 county men died in Service
War Dept. Releases list of missing and dead soldiers
20 killed in action

       The first consolidated listing of army dead and missing in WWII 
released today (Thursday), by the War Department, revealed that 34 Cedar 
county men gave their lives in the Nation's service. This figure however, 
does not include those who died while in service with the navy and marines. 
      The war department dead and missing report contained the names of 
308,978 men and women for the nation as a whole. The total for Nebraska 
was 2,976.
      The report revealed that 20 Cedar co. men died in action, one died 
of wounds received in action; 11 died of noncombat injuries and illness, 
and two were determined dead after being missing.
      An overall death and missing rate of 2.98 per cent form all causes 
was indicated by the listing for the nation as a whole. Nebraska's death 
and missing rate was 3.53 per cent. 
      Booklets were put out by the war department listed the dead by 
counties but did not give town addresses. Ludvig Nedergaard, secretary of 
the county selective board, checked the list of Cedar county dead against 
his records and provided the News with the home town addresses of all but 
two of the men listed. 
     Cedar County's 34 dead were listed by the war department as follows:
