A son Joseph died at age 13 (wrong, 12 years of age). MY GRANDMOTHER MAGGIE I just want to record a few thoughts I have about my Grandmother Maggie. If you look at her life it seemed so hard and full of heartbreak, and yet she was happy with her place in this world ! I ask her once why she wasn't prejudiced against people of color and she replied that, how can you think yourself better than someone else, when you and your mother washed and ironed clothes for people of color , to earn money to live and get by !! I can remember the boxes of wild and pheasants. geese, ducks. and rabbits, she cleaned for hunters in Lexington , at a quarter a piece. The full lot of garden she planted , took care of , and canned. Always poor and never on welfare. She lost my grandfather, when she had 7 children to provide for, the youngest a year old. They had no money because she saved every penny, until they had a thousand dollars, to send grandpa back east for treatments ( he had cancer that was eating him away. ) She never complained, she just did what had to be done. She made all of us grandchildren feel special, even raising four of us, when the need arose, (she was in her 70's), still no state help !! She didn't know the meaning of quit, until her body betrayed her and just quit on her. This strong woman, who taught us all how to live, for all the year's I knew and loved her sat in a wheelchair and didn't know she was handicapped!! As I told my mother recently, when she sat weeping, over how hard Grandma's life had been, if I hadn't had eyes, I would never known she conducted her life from a wheelchair !!! In ending I just want to state how proud I am to be her granddaughter. She left this world, leaving us all wealthy , beyond what money can buy!! I miss you Grandma! Notes for Franklin Clarence Westfall: October 1949 Lexington Clipper The death of Frank Westfall came not as a surprise to anyone , but his passing brought to the minds of all who were aware of his condition the spirit with which he faced the inevitable when he knew he was fighting a losing battle. Stricken several months ago with malignant disease of the throat , his first venture against the dreaded malady was to have his larynx removed. The operation left him speechless and also necessitated breathing through a open incisional opening in the front of his throat. This alone was enough to take the metal out of the strongest of the strong, but not so with Frank. For quite some time his mode of conversation was with a pencil and scratch pad, but he soon conquered a method of articulating words from his stomach which enabled him to carry on short conversations with his friends, If his spirit waned the least whit under such conditions it wasn't evident on the surface. he refused to sit back in solitude, but just went right on doing the things he liked to do and enjoying life to the fullest. His was the spirit of a real man. Peace to his soul and condolences to his loved ones. Burial Valley View Memorial Park. My thoughts of dad: Served in WWII, fought on the Island of Okinawa. Was a Truck driver for Dealers Transport and then Jack Cooper Transport until his death. Hauled new cars to Dealers around the Central and Western states. He drove out of Kansas City, Missouri, Denver Colorado and Salt Lake City, Utah, in that order. He loved to hunt and fish. Bowling was also one of his pastimes. He was married four times , twice to my mother. He died calling her name. Some mistakes can't be rectified. He was always on the road so time spent together was precious. In 1998 my husband and I made the trip back to Salt Lake City to gather information and to say good-bye one last time. I realized he wasn't there, that he is up there in Heaven waiting until our time here is finished also. It finally gave me the peace I was seeking about him and now all the memories of him are happy ones, He is buried Valley View Memorial Park, Granger, Utah, Plot D-50-10.
