Calling on Mr Bartlett, of the house of Smith Bros, we found him and his clerks busy in helping customers from their large and excellent assortment of goods. Our short stay prevented a call on the other business men of the place, but we have no doubt all are doing well-we did have time, however, to drop in on Sam Williams' hotel and enjoy an excellent dinner, and learn that it is the place for travelers to stop. Several parties contemplate the erection of new buildings this fall, and we look for our neighbor to continue growing rapidly in size and importance. ****** GALENA The new post office in this county on Cuming Creek, called GALENA, on the route between Fremont and West Point, is now fully established. Schuyler (NE) Messenger 18 Oct 1918 - STRANGE MEETING IN FRANCE J W Edgar tells us of the following strange incident as related by his son, Everad Edgar now serving in the U. S. army in France, where he is driving a supply truck. One night while raining and being dark with extremely muddy roads, Everad was running a truck along up a hill, going without lights, and at about two o'clock in the night. Coming from the top of the hill came another truck also running without lights. In passing each other the two trucks came to a stop and the drivers called to each other in order to make a safe passage. What was the delight of Everad when he discovered the driver of the other truck to be his old time Schuyler friend and neighbor, Harry Flinn. Of course the surprise and pleasure was mutual as Harry was just as glad as Everad to run across a friend from his home and in such a place and at such time. ******************************************************************************** DECEMBER 1997 NEWSLETTER: PRAIRIE FIRES Fremont Tribune 24 Nov 1870 3:4 On the 12th inst, a very destructive prairie fire swept along Cuming Creek, in the northwestern portion of this county, consuming in this track a large amount of grain, hay etc. Among the losses is Mr Matson, who lost house, stables, grain etc., in all about $1,000.
