Neil BRENNAN was born February 17, 1848 in Killybegs, Donegal, Ireland, and died August 09, 1915 in O'Neill, Holt, Nebraska. He married Margaret KEYES in 1881 at O'Neill, Holt, Nebraska, daughter of Thomas KEYES and Ellen O'DONNELL. She was born February 11, 1860 in Parkhill, Ontario, Canada, and died January 10, 1940 in O'Neill, Holt, Nebraska.
Neil Brennan was in the first colony of settlers that John O'Neill brought to Holt County. Neil hired on as a freighter for store owner Pat Hagerty, working nearly 5 years taking wagon trains between O'Neill and the railroad head at Wisner. In the beginning, this meant teams of oxen and wagons loaded with goods, on their way either to farmers or to the railroads: dangerous work, as outlaw attacks and murder were not unheard of. On one of his trips to Wisner he met Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Keyes and met their daughter Margaret Keyes. He persuaded the Keyes to settle in O'Neill (it has been stated that this was to make it easier for him to court Margaret.) Neil then joined J.J. McCafferty in a hardware store. J. J. McCafferty eventually became a well-known judge. Brennan's Hardware went independent in October 1882.
Children of Neil and Margaret are:
Sarah BRENNAN, b. October 05, 1882, O'Neill, Holt, Nebraska; d. September 26, 1927, O'Neill, Holt, Nebraska Sarah married James B. RYAN.
John Thomas BRENNAN, b. November 13, 1884, O'Neill, Holt, Nebraska; d. August 25, 1950, Salt Lake City, Salt Lake, Utah. He married first Florence CATTERELL, second Caroline Terea SMITH.
Mary Ellen BRENNAN, b. November 23, 1886, O'Neill, Holt, Nebraska; d. January 17, 1920, Bonesteel, Gregory, South Dakota. She married Edward Stephen DONAHUE.
Margaret G. BRENNAN, b. September 25, 1888, O'Neill, Holt, Nebraska; d. August 21, 1970, Hot Springs, Fall River, South Dakota. She married Jacob Andrew PFEILER.
Neil Patrick BRENNAN, b. January 21, 1891, O'Neill, Holt, Nebraska; d. March 31, 1961, Rapid City, Pennington, South Dakota. He married Lucile GARRETTSON.
Francis Michael BRENNAN, b. June 21, 1894, O'Neill, Holt, Nebraska; d. January 08, 1943, O'Neill, Holt, Nebraska. Mike married Mary DEVINE. Thomas Joseph BRENNAN, b. March 07, 1896, O'Neill, Holt, Nebraska; d. September 29, 1975, O'Neill, Holt, Nebraska. Tom married Agnes Loretta SHOEMAKER.
Bernadette BRENNAN, b. July 01, 1898, O'Neill, Holt, Nebraska; d. November 19, 1976, O'Neill, Holt, Nebraska. Bernadette, never married, was a librarian at O'Neill for many years.
I would like to learn more about all of the above mentioned families and anything about the early settlers and history of O'Neill City. Thanks

I have information about this family to share. Thanks

We are looking for any history on the family of Prentice Ebenezer Fisher of Amelia, NE. Supposedly he was a farmer/stockman. His wife was Anna Eliza Kline (or Cline) born in David City, NE. They married in Newport, Rock County NE in 1898. We believe they were still on the farm in Amelia in 1923. They had at least seven children, Lovina Angeline, Rolland Ernest, Merton Lyonal, Paul Elmer, Amos Josiah, Lovina Fern, and Pearl Allen (or Ellen). Any information on the Fisher farmstead, or where the children spread to, would be greatly appreciated. Prentice Ebenezer had a brother Ernest L Fisher, who supposedly married Grace Recendy Gilman in Simpson Ne in 1913. Where is Simpson ... it's not on my Rand McNally? Help!
Thanks, and Best Regards! Greg and Laura Kimberley

I am looking for information about Chester Arthur Calkins. He was my grandfather. He was the Chief of Police in O'Neill and was killed in the line of duty in March 1952. He was well known and well liked by the people of O'Neill. He had brothers: Fred, Walter, and L.D. His brother Walter served on the police force with him. He was married to Hazel Tarpening Calkins and his father's (my great grandfather's name) was Lora Calkins. Any information you might have on where my great grandfather lived or anything about his ancestory would be greatly appreciated.

I am in search of information re: the John Hubby and Nat Bradstreet families. I am a direct descendant of John Hubby and Nat Bradstreet is related through marriage to Nettie Jane Hubby. John was onetime justice of the Peace for Holt County and I believe Nat was Sheriff. Would be interested in contacting any relatives of either family.
