In an obituary for Peter (Paul) Murphy I have found the following references to O'Niel and Nebraska. Is this how the town was settled? "With the tide of immigration moving westward he went from Boston to Chicago, where he worked as a shoemaker and helped organize the colonizers under Gen. O'Neill, for the settlement of O'Neill, Nebraska. It was under Gen.O'Neill, a veteran of the Civil War, that he enlisted in the Fenien Brotherhood," "Several thousand Feniens were in camp near Buffalo, Paul Murphy among the number. Five hundred got across under General O'Neill, met the Queen's own Canadan regiment and completely routed them." Peter's life before 1870 is my brickwall and I am trying to get one step back. I believe he arrived in 1850 in Boston with a brother, Cornelius. Peter was never in Nebraska as far as I know. I am just curious about the settlement of the town.

My great-grandfather, John KALKOWSKI, was born in Poland in 1871. He lived in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania from 1874-1879, then Sherman County, Nebraska from 1879-1910. He moved his family to Atkinson, Holt County, Nebraska in 1910. I think he worked in a saloon, but I doubt it was his own. His wife was Magdalene "Maggie", and they lived in Atkinson from 1910 until at least 1924, maybe as long as 1929. Several children were born there from 1910 through 1919. The eldest daughter, Helen, married Paul Goldfuss on 28 Oct 1914 at Atkinson. Paul GOLDFUSS lived 1888-1953. I am in particular looking for any information about the death of one of the daughters of John and Maggie KALKOWSKI, Mary Kalkowski. She was born about 1907 in Ashton, Sherman County, Nebraska and then there is nothing else I can find about her. I can tell you where she is not: she is not in the 1920 census with the family; she is not in the Holt County school census with her siblings in 1918, 1919, 1920 (the school census doesn't mention the family in 1916 and 1917 - the years 1910-1915 are apparently lost); she is not in the Catholic cemetery in Atkinson, she is not in the St. Joseph's jubilee book (death record). Does anyone have other ideas for me to continue my search??? Thanks, Laura.
