Abram Fort PalmatierAbram Fort Palmatier, son of Peter Palmatier and Mary Ramsey, was born about 1839 (census age) in New York. He was baptised 19 February 1840 in the Union Reformed Dutch Church, Unionville, Albany County, NY (IGI Index). In the 1850 US census, Abram was enumerated in the household of his parents in the Town of New Scotland, Albany County, New York. He was 11 years of age. Abram F. Palmatier married Kate A. Link 22 November 1860 in the Reformed Protestant Dutch Church, Nassau, Rensselaer County, NY (IGI). The IGI Index lists Carrie "Palmateer" baptised 3 February 1865, with parents being Abraham Palmatier and Catherine Link at the East Greenbush Reformed Protestant Church, Rensselaer County, NY. Abram was enumerated in the 1865 New York State census in the Town of Schodack in Rensselaer County, NY, page 42. The census was taken during the month of June. It was stated that all members had been born in Rensselaer County: Abram "Palmateer" Age 25 Married 1 time/now married Farmer Kate Palmateer Age 25 Wife Married 1 time/2 children Jesse Palmateer Age 4 Child Carrie Palmateer Age 6/12 Child Warren Miller Age 19 None Abram and family were enumerated in the 1875 New York State census in the Town of East Greenbush, Rensselaer County. Their census entry is in the 1st Election District, page 3, and the census was taken 3 June. Abram stated he had been born in Albany County; all others in Rensselaer County: Abram Palmatier Age 35 Married Farmer Catharine Palmatier Age 35 Wife Married Carrie Palmatier Age 10 Dau Willie Palmatier Age 5 Son George Palmatier Age 3-4/12 Son Abram's wife died between 1875 and 1880, as Abram was a widower at the time of the 1880 census. Abram's brother, John, and John's wife, emigrated to Antelope County, Nebraska, in 1880 (John's obituary), living first in Willowdale, then Oakdale, where John died 19 February 1894. At the time of the 1880 US census, Abram was enumerated in the household of his parents in the Town of Schodack, Rensselaer County, NY. Their census entry is in ED 171, page 16, and all members of the household stated they had been born in NY: Peter "Palmateer" Age 75 Married Farmer Mary Palmateer Age 76 Wife Married Abram F. Palmateer Age 40 Son Widowed Carrie E. Palmateer Age 15 G-D William S. Palmateer Age 10 G-S George D. Palmateer Age 8 G-S Abram's father died 8 June 1883 (headstone). In the probate of the Last Will and Testament of Peter Palmateer of Schodack, Rensselaer County, NY (LDS microfilm 1503856, File #220), are papers that state the following about Abram: In his father's will, dated October 1880, Abram was bequeathed Fifteen Hundred Dollars. In September 1883 Abram was of Schodack, NY. In a document prepared sometime after his mother died in August 1884, Abram was of Neligh, Nebraska, and declared a legatee of the Last Will and Testament of Peter Palmateer. A deed dated 24 March 1884 is recorded in Rensselaer County Deed Book 206, page 332, between Aaron "Palmateer" and Mary Palmateer his wife, William Palmateer and Lydia Palmateer his wife, Samuel Palmateer and Hattie M. Palmateer his wife, Abram Palmateer, widowed, Peter N. Palmateer, widowed, and Addison Palmateer and Mary Palmateer his wife, parties of the first part, and Harris N. Elliot of the Town of East Greenbush, Rensselaer County, party of the second part. For the sum of $5,200.00, the Palmateers sold to Harris 134 acres situated in the Town of Schodack, Rensselaer County, excepting 3 parcels of land sold by John Palmateer and his wife in 1877 and 1878 (deeds are recorded in Rensselaer County). The premises hereby intended to be conveyed being the same owned by Peter Palmateer at the time of his death and the interest of the parties of the first part in said premises hereby intended to be conveyed being all the estate, right, title and interest therein as heirs at law or devisees under the last will and testament of Peter Palmateer deceased............ Signed by all 10 of the parties of the first part and recorded 8 April 1884. Abram's mother died 19 August 1884 (headstone). As of August 1999, Abram had not been found in any census after 1880, including the soundex censuses for Code P-453 (Palmatier/Palmateer) of New York and Nebraska for the year 1900. In the 1920 US census, Abram was enumerated in the Town of Central, Merrick County, NE, in ED 158, page 3: William Palmateer Age 50 Born NY Elizabeth Palmateer Age 48 Wife Born NE William B. Palmateer Age 11/12 Son Born NE Abram Palmateer Age 80 Father Born NY (Note: The Social Security Death Index lists the birth of William Palmateer on 5 February 1919 and died 29 February 1988, with a last residence of Curry, Clovis County, NM. His SocialSecurity Number was issued in Nebraska.) Abram and Catherine were the parents of 5 known "Palmateer" children. The baptisms of the 5 shown are recorded in "Greenbush Reformed Church at East Greenbush", by Arthur Kelly: 1. Jesse Howard, born 6 May 1862, baptised 9 September 1862 at the Greenbush Reformed Church at East Greenbush. Jesse is not listed in the 1900 New York State soundex census for Code P-453 (Palmatier). 2. Carrie E., born 2 October 1864, baptised 3 February 1865 at the Greenbush Reformed Church at East Greenbush. A Carrie Palmatier died in Rensselaer 11 June 1918 (microfiche death index for the year 1918, New York State Library, Albany, State Death Record #36208). 3. William S., born about 13 November 1870, baptised about February 1872 at the Greenbush Reformed Church at East Greenbush. William is not listed in the 1900 New York State soundex census for Code P-453. The following individual was enumerated in the 1900 census in Antelope County, Neligh Township, Nebraska, in ED 9, page 7. He was enumerated with 8 boarders, none with the "Palmatar" name. William was "Head" of this household William "Palmatar" Age 30 Born Nov 1869 NY William was enumerated in the 1920 US census in the Town of Central, Merrick County, Nebraska, as shown above. 4. George Dorn, born 29 January 1872, baptised 2 November 1872 at the Greenbush Reformed Church at East Greenbush. George is not listed in the 1900 New York State soundex census for Code P-453. The following individual was enumerated in the 1900 census in Antelope County, Neligh City, Nebraska,in ED 12, page 5. He was enumerated at the Atlantic Hotel, with no other "Palmateer" individuals: George Palmateer Age 28 Born Jan 1872 NY Salesman George is not listed in the 1920 NE soundex census for Code P-453 (Palmatier/Palmateer). 5.
