1890: Chapman is a village of 250 inhabitants on the U. P. Ry. in the south western portion of Merrick county, 10 miles west of Central City, the county seat. An excellent country surrounds the village, being particulary favorable for stock raising. The churches are Methodist and Baptist. (1890 U.P.R.R. Gazetteer)
