DIED - 2 a. m. April 20, 1902, Joseph W. Sprague, age 68 years 3 mo. 2 days, at the home of his son C. J. Sprague at Belgrade Nance County Nebraska, of dropsy. Mr. Sprague was born in Hartland township, Huron county, Ohio, Jan. 18, 1834 at which place he lived until April 29, 1884 from whence he moved to Nebraska. He was married to Martha Hawxhurst Jan. 1, 1858 with whom he lived until her death five years previous. He united with the M. E. church of Fitchville, Huron county, Ohio in 1858. After spending the winter with his daughter, Mrs. Dowman, in Cleveland, Ohio, he returned about eight weeks ago to the home of his son at which place he died. For some weeks he struggled with his illness but was confined to his bed which he kept for three weeks until the end. His suffering was intense in which time he was reconciled to depart this earth and anxious to go, pleading with the Master for the hastening of his Home departure. His remains were placed in the Main cemetery of Belgrade by the side of those of his beloved wife, Monday morning at 10 o'clock.
Card of Thanks.
We desire to thank our friends who were so kind to us and to our beloved father during his sickness and death.

October 1902 - Articles from the Nance County Journal (no date on articles) Iver CAMPBELL
Iver Campbell, of Genoa, while hunting last Tuesday, had his arm shot so badly that he died the next day from the effects of it at the St. Mary's hospital. He leaves a wife and one small child to mourn his loss.
Iver Campbell, a carpenter of Genoa, was accidentally shot Tuesday afternoon while out hunting, 7 miles south of town with Mr. Sheffer. Campbell was getting into the buggy when one of the guns, a double barrelled hammer gun which had both barrells cocked, was suddenly discharged, the whole load passing through the right arm between the elbow and shoulder. He was taken to Columbus that evening and placed under the care of Martyn, Evans and Geer, but we hear that word was received here last night that he died yesterday. Mr. Campbell was about 30 years old and leaves a wife and one child.
NOTE: Iver died 15 October, 1902. His parents were Eldridge E. Campbell and Cordelia Marie Tague. His wife was Phoebe Vidella Moore. His son was Allen Eldridge Campbell.

Hattie Hodges SPRAGUE
Mrs. Hattie Hodges Sprague, daughter of Frank and Jane Hodges was born at Dorr Center, Mich., Aug 10, 1870, and died at her home just west of Belgrade at 6 o'clock Saturday afternoon, Aug. 16, 1913, after a long illness of intense suffering, at the age of 43 years and 6 days. With her parents in the fall of 1872 she came to Merrick county, this state, where they resided until 1877 when they moved to Nance county, two years before the Indian reservation was opened for settlement, her father taking a section of land midway between Belgrade and Fullerton, making their home in the above pictured sod house. (NOTE: The photo was extremely dark and did not reproduce well from microfilm.) In the year 1890 her father purchased a half section west of Belgrade and they moved there where she was united in marriage to Carelton J. Sprague, September 6th, 1892. To this union five sons were born - Clarence, who died in infancy, Lloyd, Forest, Frank and Lealand (sic). Mrs. Sprague passed through many experiences which she related later in life, among them the destruction and devastation by the grasshoppers, the development of the unbroken prairie, trading with the Indians for buffalo robes, the happy days spent in the old sod house that stood near the grove of large cottonwood trees between Belgrade and Fullerton, the Tekomsko postoffice kept by her father when the mail was carried from Central City to Tekomska, Red Wing, Mira (which is now Belgrade) and then on to Oakdale, the long drives to market with pleasure and fascination, the fording of the streams of Nance county including the Loup river, the ferry over the Platte and how the Sioux Indians swooped down the Cedar River, stole some horses in the neighborhood of Genoa from the Pawnees, the fight that followed and the caring of the wounded Indians by her Mother. She saw her brother assist in the building of the branch line of the U. P. railroad and her father contribute to the upbuilding of Belgrade, the county, and the schools. Yet with all the hardships of their early life without the telephone, rural routes, automobiles and modern machinery, they were happy and contented. Twenty three years ago she assisted in organizing the first Sunday school in Belgrade which has never been discontinued for lack of support and attendance and lived to see her son Lloyd, superintendent of this school. Mrs. Sprague united with the Belgrade M. E. church July 24, 1892, which connection she always maintained and while on account of health it was impossible at times for her to attend the services, she taught her children to be loyal to the great cause of humanity through salvation by Jesus Christ. She leaves to mourn her departure a husband and four sons; a brother, Herbert Hodges of Hanford, Calif.; two half sisters Mrs. Ella Taylor Dewitt of Beaver Crossing, Nebr., and Helen Hodges, of Belgrade; a step-mother Mrs. John Hack, of Belgrade, and many friends. The services were conducted at the Belgrade M. E. church Monday, Aug 18, Rev. S. E. Taft (?) assisted by Rev. F. DeVol, officiating. Interment was made in the Main cemetery.

1920Feb 1920 - OBITUARY (Nance County Journal?)
Old Citizen Passes Away Albert Miller, son of Almon and Mary A. Miller, was born in Portville, Cattaraugus County, New York, January 3, 1842, and died in Fullerton, NE February 14, 1920, at the advanced age of 78 years, one month and 11 days. He was the oldest child of a family of ten children, and was the last of the family but one, a sister, Mrs. A. S. Updike of Olean, New York. He grew to manhood at the place of his birth.
In 1861, when in his nineteenth year, he enlisted in the U.S. Army in Company A 85 New York, under General McClellan. He saw much hard service. He fought a number of battles, among them were Fair Oaks and Chicohomany. He was in the grand review at D.C. At the close of the war, he was honorably discharged and returned to his father's home in New York.
He was married near his parental home October 29, 1864, to Miss Lovica Silloway. To this union, sixteen children were born, nine of whom died in infancy. Edna, the youngest daughter, was deceased at the age of 22 years.
In April 1871, he came to Nebraska and homesteaded a farm near Pierce Chapel, 7 miles southeast of Fullerton. He was one of the first settler in Merrick County. Mr. Miller, with his faithful companion, underwent many privations and hardships. To subsist and keep the wolf from the door, he traded with the Indians in and near where Fullerton is now located. He,with the early settlers, lived here during the grasshopper year and through several severe droughts, and like others received food and clothing from the home mission fund for the frontier settlers. Thru it all, he staid and made good.
During the spring of 1889, he moved to Fullerton and for some years was engaged in the implement business, and with the exception of a brief duration, he resided in Fullerton until his death.
The deceased was reared in a Methodist home. Frequently ministers were entertained and lodged in the home of his parents, which experience remained with him through his life. When at the age of twenty-five years, he was converted in New York state and united with the Methodist church, and on coming to Nebraska transferred his membership to Pierce Chapel and later to Fullerton where he remained an active member until the day of his death.
Brother Miller was a sturdy and loyal citizen and of Christian character. He endeared himself into the life of the community and was greatly loved by the family and his many friends. For the past thirty five years, he had been a member of the G.A.R. and for the past twenty-eight years, a member of the Modern Woodman.
He leaves behind a sister, a wife, three sons and three daughters, seventeen grandchildren and six great-grandchildren with many other relatives and a host of friends who will deeply feel his loss. The sons and daughters are W.R., C.A., and A.R. Miller and Mrs. Joe Snodgrass, Mrs. D.D. Miller of Fullerton and Mrs. C.A. Wellman of Fleming, Colorado.
A bereft family have the tender sympathy of the entire community.
A funeral service, that was largely attended, was held at the Methodist Church Monday, February 16, at 2:30 P.M., Rev. A.D. Davis officiating. The body was buried in the family lot in the Pierce Chapel cemetery, eight miles southeast of Fullerton.
IN MEMORY OF AL MILLER
He served the country and served it well.
As all his comrades are wont to tell;
He has now gone to reap his reward,
And sit on the right hand of the Lord,
His mortal remains are beneath the sod,
His spirit has soared to dwell with God.By a Comrade

Aug 1921 OBITUARY (Nance County Journal?)
MRS. THOMAS A. SHIVELY Indiana Violet Richards was born in Wabash county, Indiana, September 11, 1857, and departed this life on August 4, 1921 at the Methodist hospital in Omaha, at the age of 63 years, 10 months and 24 days.
When but 15 years of age she moved with her parents to Merrick county Nebraska, where on July 12, 1877, she was married to Thomas A. Shively. To this union were born seven children, three daughters, Mrs. Vern Porter of North Star, Mrs. Charles A. Miller of Fullerton and Mrs. Clarence Lawson who preceeded the mother to the Great Beyond in 1906. Four sons, Charley of this neighborhood, Lafe of Sargent, Lawrence of Fullerton and Klar who was still at home, besides two sisters, Mrs. John Anderson of St. Joseph, Mo., and Mrs. Frank Sowl of Fullerton, two brothers, Will Richards of South Bend, Neb., and Jay Richards of Fullerton, and eleven grand children are left to mourn her loss.
For several months, Mrs. Shively had been in failing health and in spite of all that loving hands and physician's care could do, she grew gradually worse until at her request she was taken to the Methodist hospital at Omaha, where her spirit took flight.
Mrs. Shively's going is felt as a personal loss by the whole neighborhood, although having gone thru all the hardships of the pioneer, her disposition was always genial with a smile and kindly word for everyone. No matter what the weather was she was always at Pierce Chapel for worship and did much for the up-building of the church - her loss is keenly felt by every family in the neighborhood, and her life has been a worthy example to all who knew her. Had the writer been choosing the text for the funeral sermon, it would have been, "She hath done what she could."
The sympathy of the entire community is extended the bereaved ones.
Funeral services were held at Pierce Chapel on Saturday afternoon conducted by Rev. Taylor, pastor of the church, assisted by Rev. Kramer of Clarks.
---------------------------------- NOTES: Her parents were Amaziah Lafayette & Rhoda "Cansada" (Bannister) Richards. According to grand-daughter Vi Lawson Gross (who lived with her Shively Grandparents, 1906-1917), Indiana Violet focused on happy thoughts and a positive life-style. She encouraged the telling of "the best thing that happened today" every evening at the supper table. The deceased daughter mentioned was Lulu Lawson (wife of Clarence); Arthealia (known at "Theal") was Mrs. LaVerne Porter (later lived & died in ID), and Lucy was Mrs. CA Miller (lived & died in Fullerton, NE). Indiana's sisters - Elizabeth Isabelle (known as Belle) was Mrs. John Anderson; and Nancy A. Richards was the wife of Frank Sowl. (Additional data on the Richards Family is from M. Sowl Johnson & S. Sowl of Central City, NE; Lois Miller Dawson of TX.)
