Union
Star Presbyterian Church and Cemetery,
Sioux County, Nebraska
From: Sioux County Centennial Book, 1986 – p 116-117
Location of cemetery: SE ¼ N, E ¼ of Sec 5, Twp 32
N, Range 53 W.
Land was given by Mary Saxton Procunier, cemetery is located east of
where the church once stood.
The Union Star Cemetery is located in Sioux County northwest of the
Earl Kuhnel ranch (in 1986). The land for the cemetery was deed
by Mary Saxton Procunier in 1888 to the Presbyterian Church in New
York.
The church was organized in 1890 by the Presbytery of Niobrara and the
congregation was dissolved in 1924. Elders of the church in that
time period were: R. C. Fergerson (Ferguson?), R. C. Tally and H.
A. Cottman. Minutes of the church meeting are on file at Missouri
Valley Presbyteria in Omha, Nebraska.
The first marked grave is Willie E. Boesel, who died Oct. 2,
1888. The last burial (as of 1986) was Milford Saxton in April
1984.
There are many unmarked graves, about 50 had been located by 1986.
The East Side Sioux Extension Club has taken on the task of maintaining
the cemetery. A search continues for cemetery
records. Written in 1986 by – Gerry Pettipiece
