Thurston County, NE

Thurston County has a new County Coordinator! I'm Ginger Cisewski, your host for this website. I made the first website for Thurston County NEGenWeb in early 1997 and after a long absence I've come back to doing what I enjoy most!  My ancestors settled in Thurston County in the 1880's, but I live in Florida now so am not available for local research.

Websites such as this one are made more valuable to other researchers by contributions from researchers just like you. If you have information relating to Thurston County, please consider sharing it here.

Thurston County was named for United States Senator John M. Thurston who assisted in effecting the organization of the county out of territory under the jurisdiction of Dakota, Wayne, and Burt counties. It was originally named Blackbird county in honor of the first Omaha chief of whom there is definite knowledge. According to Lewis and Clark who visited his grave in 1804 he died in 1800. The Indian name of Chief Blackbird was Wagigasabey [WazhigaSabe]. It is also authoritatively stated that the county was originaly named Black Bird after the mythological Thunder Bird of the Indians. The boundaries of the county were defined by an act of the legislature approved March 7, 1855.

NEGenWeb was formed June 15, 1996, when Dale Schneider created the Nebraska Genealogy Project as a part of the USGenWeb Genealogy Project. At that time, there was very little available on the web for those who were researching genealogy in Nebraska. Over the next year, volunteers were recruited to coordinate the webpages for each county. These volunteers were willing to coordinate the collection of databases and generally oversee the contents of the county webpages, which would include listing information on where to look in that county for genealogical research. Contact the volunteer shown on the county page if you have a desire to help or add your data to the database. You may notice a message on a county page indicating it is available for adoption. If you would like to adopt one of these counties, please contact the current coordinator of the page, whose name is listed on their county site, or the State Coordinator.
