This is a picture of the old sod schoolhouse in the Marquiss district, now School District 85, five miles southeast of Broken Bow, Custer County on the Sumner highway. The teacher of the old sod school in 1892 was 16-year-old Hiva Miller, later Hiva Lawrence of Cairo, Nebraska.

"Dad Don" is Linel Don Marquiss, father of Marvel (Marquiss) Howell and younger brother of Emma Clarinda (Marquiss) Knox. Marvel (Marquiss)Howell was born 14 Feb 1905, at Broken Bow, Custer County, Nebraska and celebrated her 96 birthday on Valentine's Day. She now lives at Newcastle, Weston County, Wyoming.
