Oct 2000: Some reference is made to census records that are not yet posted on the internet. At least two commercial genealogical companies have announced their intention to publish huge collections of census images in the next few months, so will include those persons for whom census records are known. We began collecting the Swiss of Platte County, NE many years ago because so many came from Aarwangen, Bern, Switzerland - including my Great-Grandmother Elise Gerber Gutzwiller Gassman. Connections to those other families occurred in "the old country". Descendents of those Swiss married into my Swedes and Austrians! Some Europeans do not understand how "Heinz 57" most Americans are! This list is by no means complete - not even for Platte County, NE.
     Year of immigration may be from biography, or from 1900 Census. It is not necessarily accurate, especially for women. If a woman immigrated separately from Father or Husband, her year of immigration tends to change over to time to match one or the other of the males in her life! Whether that is because the question was answered that way - or because enumerator assumed same year of immigration for females - we'll never know. The country of origin for a female can also change until it matches the husband ...
     You will find your Swiss ancestors are sometimes identified as "German" because that was their "accent"; assorted clerks & enumerators simply wrote it down that way because they "heard German" in speech pattern. The same applies to Austrians and other ethnic groups.

If you are willing to make up a chart for some other ethnic group of immigrants to Nebraska, please contact Connie Snyder.
Believe the number of Germans, English, Irish, Danes, Swedes and Canadians would be too massive to handle, but those from The Netherlands, France, Norway, Belgium, Luxembourg, Wales, Finland, and other places would be of interest, especially to those in Europe who are seeking the descendents of collateral lines. One of their problems is changes in surname spelling to "Americanized" form, which they don't recognize.
