Photo Studio On Rails

Hutchings Railroad Photo Car

The photos below were taken in a railroad car that was designed to be a traveling studio. One would not know, from looking at the pictures, that the photos were not taken in a typical photographer's studio. Our thanks to Phyllis Merryman Cloyd for the use of these rare photos.

Here are two photos taken by the Hutchings Railroad Photo Car while the Merryman family was living in Kearney, NE. Based upon the ages of the children, the photos were taken circa 1887. This first photo is the parents: Freeman Merryman and his wife Alcinda Burns VanMeter.

This second photo is the four Merryman children (left to right) Minnie, Royal Howard, Nellie and Arthur Freeman. (FYI -- there's a bio of Freeman Merryman at the Buffalo County web site.)
