SUMMARY OF PROCEEDINGS.

      The Twelfth Session of the Nebraska Annual Conference was held in the M. E. Church in Nebraska City, beginning March 20, 1872, Bishop Levi Scott presiding.

     The business of the Conference was preceded by the Sacrament of the Lord's Supper.

     At 9 o'clock, A. M., Bishop Scott called the Conference to order, and H. T. Davis, Secretary of the last session, called the roll.

     W. B. Slaughter was elected Secretary, and J. H. Presson and L. F. Britt were elected Assistant Secretaries.

     The Presiding Elders were made a committee to nominate the Standing Committees.

     Bishop Scott announced that the Conference was authorized to draw on the Chartered Fund for thirty-five dollars.

     A communication was read from the Missionary Society of the M. E. Church, and the Conference resolved that the special collection asked for by the Missionary Society be endorsed by the Conference, and that the amount be assessed, by the Presiding Elders, to the circuits and stations, and reported to the Conference before the close of the present session.

     The Secretary was instructed to forward to the Corresponding Secretary of the Missionary Society a certified report of the proceedings of this Conference on the subject of Missions.

     The report of the Book Committee was read and placed on file.

     On motion, the Conference Trustees were authorized to receive and consider propositions for the location of a Seminary, from any points desiring to make such proposition, and that propositions must be in writing.

     Nominations of Standing Committees were reported and the report was adopted.

     The certificates of Transfer of Cyrus A. King, S. P. Bollman and G. W. Gue were read and placed on file.

MINUTES OF THE NEBRASKA CONFERENCE.

      The 4th Question, "Who are the Deacons?" was taken up, and D. Marquett, F. M. Esterbrook and J. W. Martin were passed.

     The 7th Question, "Who are the Supernumeraries?" was taken up, and Lewis Janney and M. F. Shinn were continued.

     The 8th Question, "Who are the Superannuated and worn out Preachers?" was taken up.

     H. Burch, W. Hart, Z. B. Turman, J. T. Canon and C. W. Giddings were continued.

     The 11th Question, "Are all the Preachers blameless in life and conversation?" was taken up and the following brethren were passed:

     M. PRITCHARD, T. B. Lemon, Isaac Burns, G. S. Alexander, R. C. Johnson, J. W. Taylor, D. H. May, R. Burge, W. S. Blackburn, D. J. Ward, L. F. Britt.

     At their request, Bro. Elwood and Bro. Grantham were granted supernumerary relation.

     H. T. DAVIS, J. J. Roberts, J. G. Miller, A. L. Folden, H. P. Mann J. L. Fort, passed.

     Conference adjourned and the benediction was pronounced.
   


SECOND DAY.

      Conference met at 9 A. M. Bishop Scott in the Chair.

     Religious services were conducted by C. McKelvey.

     The roll was called, and on motion the further calling of the roll was dispensed with during the session.

     The minutes were read and approved.

     The following additional committees were ordered

     On The Woman's Foreign Missionary Society--L. F. Britt, W. A. Presson and C. McKelvey.

     On The Bible Cause--D. J. Ward, G. W. Elwood, J. H. Presson, G. DeLaMatyr and J. M. Adair.

     On Memorials to the General Conference--G. S. Alexander, J. G. Miller, G. W. Elwood.

     The certificates of transfer of Wm. E. Morgan and Rufus Crane were read and placed on file.

      The 11th question was resumed, and the following brethren passed:
      A. G. WHITE; G. DeLaMatyr, C. A. King, W. B. Slaughter, C. McKelvey, J. Adriance, G. W. DeLaMatyr, M. E. Hysore, S. P. VANDUZER and J. M. Adair.

     The 3d question, "Who are admitted in to full connection?" was taken up, and J. H. Presson and A. Black well were examined before the Conference by Bishop Scott, admitted and elected to Deacon's Orders.

     The 2nd question, "Who remain on trial?" was taken up. Wm. Peck, G. H. Wehn, L. F. Whitehead, C. W. Wells, Isaac W. Bradt, and D. B. Lake were contined (sic). Wm. H. Woods and Swaine A. Westergreen were discontinued.

     John H. DeLaMatyr were elected to Elder's Orders.

     On motion, the election of delegates to the General Conference was made the order of the day for to-morrow at 10 A. M.

     Rev. M. A. Fairchild, formerly an ordained minister in the Wesleyan Methodist Connection of America, was introduced, and, on motion, the Conference recognized Bro. Fairchild as an Elder.

     On motion, the Conference proceeded to fix the place for holding the session. Peru, Pawnee City and Plattsmouth were named, and Plattsmouth was selected.

     On motion, C. A. King was added to the Committee on Temperance.

     The Conference adjourned in usual form.


THIRD DAY.

      Conference met at 9 A. M. Bishop Scott in the Chair.

     Minutes were read and approved.

     T. B. Lemon was appointed a committee to present the greetings of this Conference to the Electoral Conference now in session, and it was resolved, that when we adjourn it be to meet, at 4P. M., in joint session with the Electoral Conference.

     On motion, the Conference requested the transfer of Rev. B. C. Parker, a superannuated member of the Wisconsin Conference, to this Conference, and Bro. Parker was made effective.

     The following brethren were re-admitted to the traveling connection: A. J. Swarts, W. B. M. Colt, Harrison Presson and W. B. Gage.

      E. J. Fulford, an Elder in the M. E. Church in Canada, was admitted on his credentials into this Conference, and granted a supernumerary relation.

     The order of the day was taken up, and the Conference Resolved,

     1st. To vote for delegates by ballot.

     2nd. That it require a majority to elect.

     3d. That there be three Tellers.

     H. P. Mann, F. M. Esterbrook and G. W. Elwood were elected Tellers.

     The roll was called and the members voted as called.

     On the first ballot 48 votes were cast, of which T. B. Lemon received 27, and he was declared elected.

     On the second, third and fourth ballots there was no choice.

     On the fifth ballot 47 votes were cast, of which J. B. Maxfield received 27, and he was declared elected.

     A. G. White and M. Pritchard were elected as reserves.

     The 1st question, "What preachers are admitted on trial?" was taken up, and John Gallagher, F. A. Hull, G. M. Cooper, John Patterson, Wm. E. Bassett, J. R. Reed, Peter Lindquist, Wm. H. Porter, Stephen B. York, John M. Perkins and J. S. Smith were admitted.

     The case of Bro. Comstock was reconsidered, and he was continued on trial.

     Conference adjourned, the benediction was pronounced by Dr. Crary.

AFTERNOON SESSION.

     The Conference met in joint session with the Electoral Conference, at 4 P. M. Bishop Scott in the Chair.

     Religious services were conducted by G. DeLaMatyr.

     Col. John Ritchie, President of the Electoral Conference, was introduced to the Conference by Bishop Scott, and took his seat on the platform with the Bishop.

     Rev. T. B. Lemon was then introduced by the Bishop to the Electoral Conference, and, in a brief but happy speech, presented to them the greetings of the Conference.

     Col. Ritchie, in response, read a well considered address to the Conference, expressive of the deep devotion of the laity to the Church, their love for her ministry and her work, and their earnest desire to co-operate, with them, in carrying forward her great enterprises.

      The Secretary of the Electoral Conference followed with a neat speech to the Conference, which he happily illustrated by presenting the sum of $45.30, to be used in publishing the minutes.

     Remarks were made by Dr. Crary, Hon. S. P. Majors and Bishop Scott, after which the Conference adjourned.


FOURTH DAY.

     Conference met at 9 A. M. Bishop Scott in the Chair.

     Religious services were conducted by J. B. Maxfield.

     Stewards made their report. Approved.

     Dennis B. Lake, George Worley and George Scott were elected to Deacon's Orders.

     Committee on Periodicals reported, and the report was adopted.

     On motion it was resolved that when we adjourn it be to meet at 2 o'clock P. M.

     Committee on Bible Cause reported. On motion it was ordered that the cash in the hands of the Committee be paid over to the State Agent of the American Bible Society.

     The Committee on Temperance was instructed to act with the Committee on that subject appointed by the Electoral Conference.

     The Committee on Memorials was instructed to act with a similar committee of the Electoral Conference.

     The Committee on education reported. Report adopted.

     G. S. Alexander was elected Conference Trustee in place of Bro. Cropsey, and the old Board, except Bro. Cropsey, were re-elected.

     Committee on Church Extension reported. Report adopted.

     Conference adjourned.

AFTERNOON SESSION.

     Conference met at 2 P. M. Rev. T. B. Lemon in the Chair.

     Religious services conducted by H. Presson.

     On motion, Bro. J. J. Roberts was granted a superannuated relation.

     Bro. M. E. Hysore was granted a supernumerary relation.

     The Committee on Nominations of Officers and Managers of Church Extension Board reported, and the report was adopted.

     Committee on Tracts reported and the report was adopted.

     Committee on Memorials reported. The report was adopted.

MINUTES OF THE NEBRASKA CONFERENCE.

      Committee on The Woman's Foreign Missionary Society reported. Pending the report, Mrs. A. G. Newman was introduced to the Conference, and gave an interesting account of the operations of the Society. The report was adopted.

     Bro. S. P. Bollman was continued on trial.

     Bro. Fort reported $154 as the amount of collections for the expenses of Delegates to the General Conference. Ordered that the funds be turned over to Bro. Lemon.

     Committee on Missions reported, and the report was adopted.

     Committee on Temperance reported, and report adopted.

     Committee on Sunday School Statistics report. Report received and placed on file. The Sunday School report was adopted.

     Resolutions of thanks were adopted.

     Bishop Scott read the 22nd Hymn, which the Conference united fervently in singing, and prayer was offered by Dr. Crary.

     After some appropriate remarks by the Bishop, the appointments of preachers for the year was announced, and the Conference adjourned.

     The doxology was sung and the benediction was pronounced by Bishop Scott.
