GARRETT BIBLICAL INSTITUTE.

We are in thorough sympathy with this School of Theology. We gladly recognize its noble record, its eligible location, its fine financial foundation. We will give to this institution our prayers and continued sympathy, and will turn the attention of young men, called to the ministry, to the importance of seeking its superior advantages for thorough equipment for the work of the ministry.

We recommend the appointment of the following as a visiting committee:

     S. H. Henderson, T. H. Worley, J. W. Shank, C. L. Brockway.

Your Committee desire to record their hearty appreciation of the work accomplished by the Board of Education of the M. E. Church. During the last eight years the Board has disbursed $58,000, mostly to aid in the "more advanced education" of graduates; from the Sunday-schools of our churches, many of whom are now ministers in various Conferences, while some are missionaries in foreign fields.

In order to co-operate with this Board, we agree, as a Conference, to put forth energetic action in the line indicated by the discipline.

REPORT OF COMMITTEE ON FORM FOR INCORPORATING CHURCHES.

Your Committee, to whom was referred the matter of preparing a form for the incorporating our churches, beg leave to submit the following form, which we believe will comply with the requirements of the statutes of the state.

CERTIFICATE OF ELECTION.

This is to certify that at a quarterly conference of ------ charge, in district, of the annual Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church, held at ------, county of -----, state of Nebraska, on day of 18--, --------------- was elected Secretary, and the following named persons, viz.:-------------- were duly elected a Board of Trustees of ---------- Church at ----------- to receive and hold property, real and personal, for the use and benefit of membership and ministry thereof, according to the rules and discipline of the Methodist Episcopal Church, and the laws of the state of Nebraska, until their successors are elected.

REPORT OF THE COMMITTEE ON THE STATE OF THE CHURCH.

Your Committee, on the State of the Church, would submit the following report:

We note with pleasure the rapid development of our state in all material growth, and rejoice in that the reports from all parts of our Conference warrant

the belief that the Church is correspondingly measuring up with this advancement over the past, in the added number and larger size of church and parsonage building, and removing much indebtedness.

It is a cause of congratulation that so generally the pastors report all the benevolent collections taken.

As there is an intimate relation between material prosperity and spiritual growth, we hopefully look for the added membership to our communion and

deep heartfelt piety. Nevertheless we fear, that with the influx of a Population of all sorts of religious culture, there is a tendency to, too much liberality to. wards those popular amusements of the day, in which Christians can hardly participate, in the name of the Lord, viz. Attending horse racing, the circus and the theatre; therefore

Resolved, 1st, That this Conference, in a most pronounced manner, disapprove of any complicity of our members with any such doubtful practices of the world.

Resolved, 2d, That all kinds of pleasure-seeking on the Sabbath, such as riding, driving or visiting only for pleasure, meet our emphatic disapproval, as openly violating the command of God, to "Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy."

Resolved, 3d, That the practice of raising funds for church purposes by the use of grab-bags, ring cakes, or any other lottery scheme, meets our unqualified condemnation.

     Respectfully submitted,

R. COOLY,
      Secretary.

S. P. WILSON,
       Chairman.

REPORT OF COMMITTEE ON WESTERN BOUNDARY AND MEMORIAL.

Your Committee on the Western Boundary Line of the Nebraska and the North Nebraska Conference, beg leave to present the following report:

The committee met; J. B. Maxfield in the chair; all the committee present. P. C. Johnson was elected Secretary.

The following resolution was adopted, to wit.:

Resolved, That the west boundary line of the Nebraska and the North Nebraska Conferences shall be the west line of range; 12, west of the 6th principal meridian in the state of Nebraska.

The resolution was adopted by a vote of 6 to 1.

P. C. JOHNSON,
Secretary.

The following memorial was prepared and presented by the committee:

To the Bishops and Members of the General Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church, in Conference assembled:

     Dear Fathers and Brethren

WHEREAS, The Nebraska Conference was, at its 21st regular session, held in

38

MINUTES OF THE NEBRASKA CONFERENCE.

the city of York, York county, Nebraska, September 14th, 1881, Bishop Foster, presiding, divided into the Nebraska and the North Nebraska Conferences.

We, the members of the above named Conference, now assembled, do most respectfully memoralize your body to make the western boundary line of the said Conference as follows, to wit.

Commencing at a point on the northern boundary line of Nebraska where the west line of range 12 west of the 6th principal meridian intersects that boundary, running thence south on said line to the southern boundary of the state.

And your petitioners will ever pray.

BEPORT (sic) OF COMMITTEE ON CHURCH EXTENSION.

Resolved, That we, as a Conference, pledge ourselves to do all we can in the interest of this Society ; that we will present the cause intelligently to our people and take up the annual collection.

Resolved, That the thanks of the Conference are hereby tendered to Bishop Foster for his very instructive address on this subject before the Conference.

Resolved, That we recognize the benefits we have received as a Conference in the past from this Society; that we desire to manifest our confidence in the officers and managers of the Church Extension Society, and will gladly welcome its officers to our annual Conferences; and will do all we can to make their visits to us pleasant and profitable.

L. F. BRITT,
      Secretary.

W. K. BEANS,
       Chairman.

REPORT OF COMMITTEE ON FREEDMEN'S AID SOCIETY.

Your Committee, to whom were referred certain documents from the Corresponding Secretary, Dr. Rust, relative to the good work which is being done by the Society and the amount of funds necessary to prosecute the work so successfully the present year ; and believing that it is one of the most noble and deserving of our benevolent causes; having under its direction and control twenty educational institutions of various grades, employing eighty-seven teachers, and embracing 2,976 students; and as the Secretary of the Society asks of our Conference the sum of $650.00 as our apportionment of the $125,000.00 necessary to do the great work of the Society the currenr (sic) year; therefore

Resolved, 1, That the Presiding Elders apportion the amount to their respective districts and charges according to their judgment.

Resolved, 2, That the Pastors present the cause to their congregations in the early part of the year, and earnestly and perseveringly endeavor to raise the amount apportioned to our Conference.

     Respectfully submitted,

O. P. SHELDON,
         Secretary.

JOHN A. DIXON
       Chairman.
