AGRICULTURE

In 1858, for the first time, the supply of grain grown in the territory of Nebraska exceeded the local demand. In 1924 Nebraska ranked third of the states in the farm values of corn and of wheat produced, and fourth in the farm value of live stock raised. In 1925 Nebraska ranked fifth among the states in the value of all crops produced.

The land area of the state is about 49,170,777 acres, of which 17,107,300 is cultivated lands, 27,070,219 acres is in range and pasture, and 883,783 acres is woodland. In 1920 the Federal census reported 54.7 per cent of the land to be improved farm land. Since 1910, many acres, formerly considered arid, have been reclaimed by irrigation, the number of acres under irrigation in 1925 amounting to 442,394. Owners operate 27,665,170 acres and tenants 20,411,281 acres. The total number of -farms in 1925 was 127,727 valued at $2,744,615,519. On these farms 589,802 Nebraskans make their homes.

More than one million acres are in alfalfa, the annual production averaging over two tons to the acre. The total output of all kinds of hay in 1925 was nearly six million tons, much of this being natural, wild hay. In the same year 84,000 acres of potatoes produced an average of 75 bushels to the acre. Rye, buckwheat and flaxseed are grown in considerable quantities. The 1925 yield of sugar beets totaled 816,000 tons and was valued at $11,340,000. The value of the live stock and live stock products marketed in 1925 is as follows:

People living on the farms own 102,164 automobiles, which is about one-third of the total number registered in 1925. These cars had access to 5,966 miles of improved roads in 1925.

The following statistics are taken from Nebraska Agricultural Statistics, 1925, a publication issued cooperatively by the United States department of Agriculture and the Nebraska department of agriculture.
