GENEALOGICAL RECORD

A GENEALOGIST'S BOOKSHELF

     We are pleased to announce that Col. Charles E. Banks has at last completed his great work on the Pilgrim settlers and their English homes. Col. Banks, long noted as a thorough genealogist, has spent many years on this work, and has devoted much of that time to research in English archives. He has taken a list of the passengers of the Mayflower, the Fortune, and the Ann, and has eliminated from that list the names of those who left the Plymouth Colony for one reason or another. Some seventy- two names are left, of those he has identified over fifty. The book is to be entitled: The English ancestors and homes of the Pilgrim Fathers, and is to be published in New York by The Grafton Press.

     Mr. Elijah Francis Atwood, of Sisseton, South Dakota, has published his genealogy of the Atwoods. It is called Ye Atte Wode Annals, and contains the results of years of work on the various branches of this old and prolific family. Copies' may be obtained from Mr. Atwood himself.

*    *    *    *

     Martinus Nijhoff, of The Hague, Holland, has published a monumental work on the early Dutch settlers in America. It is the work of J. Van Hinte, And is called Nederlanders in Amerika. Mr. Nijhoff says of this book: " The first comprehensive work on the history of the Dutch emigrants and colonists in the U. S. A. during the 19th and 20th centuries. Beginning with the emigration of the 17th century the work treats on the settlements under the directorship of Van Raalte and Scholte, the Catholic emigration, etc. Moreover the author treats on the new fatherland of the colonists, and the religious, economical and political relations of the different settlements." It is issued in two volumes, and costs fourteen dollars.

    The editor feels that Mr. John Galsworthy, the English novelist, must be a genealogist, for in his excellent novel, The Fortyte Saga, he has included a very fine genealogical table showing the relationship of the various Forsytes who appear in the book. Incidentally, it is sometimes very amusing to keep a scratch pad handy when reading a novel, and sketch out the genealogical relations of the various characters.

*    *    *    *

     One of our own members, Mrs. C. H. Jenkins, has recently published an admirable piece of genealogical work Consider Law ... his ancestros and descendants (Lincoln, Nebr.,

 66

THE NEBRASKA AND MIDWEST

1928). It deals with the Law, Biggs, Draper, Huckstep, Langrell, Little, Pitney, Thomas, Tilden, Warren (Richard, of the Mayflower), Waters, and Wigglesworth families. Much of this is the result of original research on the part of Mrs. Jenkins, and it is all compiled with her rigid accuracy and pains. Mr. George Waters, whose ancestry it represents, is to be congratulated on employing so careful a genealogist.
*    *    *    *

     Mr. G. Andrews Moriarity, of Newport, Rhode Island, a well-known genealogist noted for his painstaking work, announces that he will publish in the New England Historical Genealogical Register for January, 1929, an account of the English ancestry of Samuel Morse, one of the early emigrants to New England. Mr. Moriarity, whose initials G. A. M. are familiar to Transcript readers, has already published several of these accounts of the English connections of our progenitors in the Register. His work is so careful and so accurate that his conclusions can be accepted without question. He is thoroughly familiar with the procedure of research in English archives - a procedure much different from that in American records.

*    *    *    *

     Mr. William H. Eldridge, of Twin Falls, Idaho, is at work upon an Eldredge-Eldridge genealogy. The editor, by virtue of a long correspondence with him, feels certain that he will welcome information about the Eldredges and their kin.

*    *    *    *

     The late Mr. Charles Browning, of Philadelphia, was at work upon a revised edition of his monumental work Americans of Royal Lescent, when he died somewhat over a year ago. The editor has been reliably informed that Mr. Browning's daughter will complete the work of preparing the volume for the printer, and that Mr. Hitchcock will publish the volume at the Grafton Press. Many of the pedigrees in the earlier editions have been found to be inaccurate, and will be both revised and corrected in the forthcoming editions. It is to be hoped that the new edition will contain references covering each successive generation of a given pedigree. Pedigree workers should be warned that a lengthy pedigree, leading back to noble and royal families, should be very carefully checked. Exact references should always be given, and the location of manuscript material should always be carefully noted.
