     Mr. Earl L. W. Heck, of Richmond, Surrey, England, has recently published an account of one line of George Washington's ancestry under the title Colonel William Ball of Virginia, The Great-Grandfather of Washington (London, 1928). The book contributes practically nothing to what is already known about the Ball family. It does bring to-gether from various places such data as is known, however. Therein lies the value of the book. It is a handy, nicely printed little volume, cheap enough to be obtainable by anyone with the Ball line (it costs five shillings, or slightly over a dollar).

*    *    *

     There has just been published by the Tuttle Morehouse Company, of New Haven, Connecticut, a genealogy of the descendants of William Kelsey, of Cambridge, Hartford, and Killingworth. It is edited and compiled by Mr. C. C. Kelsey.

*    *    *

     Mr. Frederick Taylor Gates, of Montclair, New Jersey, has published a volume about his ancestry. It contains much valuable data about the Gates family. As the most comprehensive genealogy of the Gates family is several years old, and was compiled before the days of what might be called scientific, or painstaking, genealogy, this new volume will be very welcome.

     17. NATHANIEL4 MAXFIELD (Eliphalet3 Nathaniel2 John1), son of Eliphalet and Elizabeth (Thompson) Maxfield, was born at South Hampton, New Hampshire, 24 May 1743; he died in 1797 and was buried at Loudon, New Hampshire.

     He was a tanner, by trade, and lived first at South Hampton. Later he removed to Kensington, and then to Epping. He also lived at Candia, where he signed as a witness a receipt given by John Colby, 26 April 1777 (New Hampshire Revolutionary Rolls, vol. 3, p. 587). He signed the Association Test there (ibid. vol. 30, p. 23). He served as a private, from 21 July 1777 until 18 September 1777, in Capt. Stephen Dearborn's company, Col. Thomas Stickney regiment, Gen. Stark's Brigade, which marched from Chester, N. H., to the defense of Bennington, Vermont, in that year. He was present at the Battle of Bennington on 16 August 1777 (ibid., vol. 2, p. 168). J. B. Moore, in his History of Candia, p. 79, speaks of him as Captain Nathaniel Maxfield, and says (p. 494) that he built a house there. In 1780 Nathaniel Maxfield was at Epping, where he was living at the time of the 1790 census. Some time after 1791 he removed to Loudon, where he died. His children, born at Epping, were baptized by the pastor of the Congregational Church there; those who were married at Loudon were married by the Reverend Jedediah Tucker, pastor of the Congregational Church there.

     Nathaniel Maxfield married at Kensington, New Hampshire, 23 June 1766, Mehitable Rowe, daughter of Joseph4 (Robert 3------- 2 Nicholas 1) and Ruth (Sherburne) Rowe. She was born at Hampton, New Hampshire, 20 May 1752. No record of her death has been found. A family tradition says that Nathaniel Maxfield married also a Mrs. Hills. A Mehitable Maxfield married a John Hill. Possibly the similarity of names confused the descendants, and Mrs. Mehitable (Rowe) Maxfield may have been the Mehitable Maxfield who married John Hill.

THE NEBRASKA GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY

Lincoln, Nebraska

     The Society was formed several years ago by a group of people interested in genealogy. It is the purpose of the Society to preserve the genealogical records of the Middle West and, wherever possible, trace the families of the Middle West to the eastern progenitors. With this in mind the Society has published for six years THE NEBRASKA AND MIDWEST GENEALOGICAL RECORD, a quarterly magazine, which is sent to all members of the Society.

     Membership in the Society is open to anyone interested in its aims. The annual dues are two dollars, including the magazine, payable in advance in January. Anyone desiring to become a member may do so by sending the dues to the Treasurer of the Society.

     Life membership is available at fifty dollars. All funds derived from Life Memberships are kept as an endowment, and the income only is used for the support of the Society.

     Material for publication in the RECORD should be sent to the Editor, Gilbert H. Doane, The University Library, Lincoln, Nebraska. Any one may submit manuscripts for consideration for publication. The Editor reserves the right to reject or accept material, and, if accepted, to put it into the form used by the magazine. It is suggested that prospective contributors study carefully the form of the various types of articles that have been printed, and follow that form as closely as possible in preparing their material for consideration.

The officers for the year 1929 are:

President - Mrs. Samuel Avery.
1st Vice-President - Mrs. C. A. Reynolds.
2nd Vice-President - Mrs. Adam McMullen.
Recording Secretary - Mrs. C. H. Jenkins.
