A GENEALOGIST'S BOOKSHELF

At last the long heralded genealogy of the Farwell family has appeared. Misses Jane H. Abbott and Lillian M. Wilson have published The Farwell Family (Rutland, Vt., The Tuttle Co., 1929. 2 vols.). After years of research they have traced the descendants of Henry and Olive (Wilby) Farwell, of Boston, England, and Concord & Chelmsford, Massachusetts; and of Samuel Farwell, of Marblehead, Massachusetts; and many other Farwells, not definitely connected with either of these two families. It is, on the whole, an excellent piece of work. The co-compilers have been very careful to state their references and note the source of the information. As a descendant of the family the Editor is able to state that the un-connected Ezra Farwell, the account of whose family is found on p. 808 of Vol. 2, was the son of Samuel and Abigail (Calif) Farwell, whose marriage is noted on p. 204 of Vol. 1, Fam. No. 850. Proof, other than family papers, is not forthcoming, but it has been well-known in the family for several generations, and it is further known that Abigail (Calif) Farwell married, secondly, Christopher Tiffany. Samuel and Abigail (Calif) Farwell had six children: Samuel, Ezra, Omar, Ossman, Betsy, and Abigail. Samuel Farwell was killed by the fall of a tree which he was chopping down. His widow married Christopher Tiffany in 1806, and had further issue by him: Hiram, b. 12 Mar. 1807, and Christopher, b. 31 May 1809. The Editor received these records in 1925 from George F. Underwood, of Los Angeles, who is a grandson of Omar Farwell, one of the six children mentioned above. He copied the records from papers left by his grandmother. According to a tombstone record (see New England Historical and Genealogical Register, vol. 74, p. 178), Samuel Farwell d. at Bakersfield, Vermont, 16 March 1805. Ezra Farwell was b. at Alstead, N. H., 8 Nov. 1797.

Genealogists are welcoming the many volumes of Virginia records that are now being published. One of the most important of these promises to be The Edward Pleasants Valentine Papers, which are to be published in four volumes by the Valentine Museum, Richmond, Va. The late Edward P. Valentine very assiduously gathered Virginia documents of a genealogical nature, made abstracts of wills, administration accounts, deeds, land patents, etc. These were deposited in the Valentine Museum at the time of his death, and are now to be arranged, edited, and printed.

The Coney-Cony Genealogy, compiled by Mary Lovering Holman, has been published. It contains a record of the ancestry, traced back into England, and the descendants of John Coney, who came from Boston, England, to Boston, Massachusetts, about 1633.

Mrs. Philomene Jenkins has just published her Waters-Law and Allied Families (Lincoln, Neb., 1929), an attractively printed book of 96 pages, in which is to be found accounts of the Biggs, Carrier, Curtis, Dayton, Draper, Huckstep, Langrell, Little, Law, Pitney, Sterling, Thomas, Tilden, Warren, Waters, and Wigglesworth Families, in so far as George Leland Waters, for whom this genealogy has been compiled, is descended from them. About half of the book is a revised reprint of Mrs. Jenkins' Consider Law, which she published for Mr. Waters about a year ago. The remainder of the volume is devoted mainly to the Waters genealogy, which Mrs. Jenkins has compiled with her usual thoroughness.
