THE NEBRASKA AND MIDWEST

A GENEALOGIST'S BOOKSHELF

     Announcement has been made of the publication of The History of Winthrop, Maine, 1764-1925, by Everett S. Stackpole, containing "historical and genealogical matter, the history of early settlers, industrial history, lists of town officers, complete military history with the records of more than a hundred Revolutionary soldiers," etc. It is for sale by Mrs. M. R. Whiting, Winthrop, Me., at five dollars.

*    *    *    *

     The Tuttle, Morehouse & Taylor Company, of New Haven, Conn., announce the publication of The Bassett-Preston Ancestry, ($10.00), compiled by Miss Belle Preston, containing the record of the ancestry of Edward M. Bassett and his wife, Annie R. Preston. A great many colonial New England families are included in this record.

*    *    *    *

     Mr. Sidney A. Merriam, 5 Waldron Court, Marblehead, Mass., has published a valuable little guide for the amateur genealogist entitled: How To Trace Your Own Ancestry ($1.00), based on the experience of fifteen years of genealogical research. This booklet is especially valuable for the bibliography of source material arranged by states. Under Vermont Mr. Merriam might well have added the volume of the New Hampshire State Papers covering Benning Wentworth's grants of land in the territory now known as Vermont, for in each grant recorded is a list of the grantees, many of whom ultimately became settlers. He might also have listed the Records of the Governor and Council of Vermont (8 vols.) which covers the history of the state from its inception in 1775 to 1836, containing many biographical sketches and other valuable genealogical records. Also, the new series of State Papers being published by the State of Vermont, at Montpelier. In this new series the records of many grants, not included in the volume of the New Hampshire State Papers, are being printed for the first time. On the whole, however, Mr. Merriam's pamphlet gives the amateur an excellent idea of how to begin his work. It should be noted that the Library of Congress list of genealogies was published in 1919, not 1916, as Mr. Merriam states. A revised edition of this valuable bibliography is greatly needed.
