   (h) Settled in Johnson Co., 1856.- Tecumseh Chieftain, July 2, 1931.
   (i) Joseph P. Cannon, b. Sept. 14, 1814, Shelby Co., 0., M. Nov. 7, 1835, at Berrien, Mich., Phoebe Jordan, was a Methodist minister who came to Nebraska City 1855, where he was a merchant about one year. He was a member of the legislature from Cass Co., 1871. - Morton-Watkins, II, 527.

   (1) John L. Lorton settled in Ill. 1805 and in Ia. 1836. He came to Nebraska City 1855 and was Superintendent of the Otoe Indians until 1861. His son Robert was born near Burlington, Ia., Oct. 8, 1837, and was a merchant at Nebraska City. - Andreas, p. 1224. Of course Robert Lorton was just 18 years old, not 21 as given in the Census.
   (m) Lafe Duncan and Charles Beerwagon came with Richard Pell, spring of 1834, but didn't remain long. - Nebraska City News, Dec. 25, 1906.
   (n) William D. Gage, b. Dec. 5, 1803, Pa., orphaned at 6 years of age, married Jan. 1, 1832, Flatbush, N. Y., Miss Sarah Schoonmaker, and came to Otoe Co., 1853. He was a shoemaker and a Methodist minister and held many positions of trust. - Morton-Watkins, I, 201.

   (r) Frederick Gesling was born in Westphalia, Germany, and came to Nebraska City, 1854. - Nebraska City Daily News, Dec. 2, 1899.
   (s) Daniel Leonidas McGary, b. Jan 1834, Madisonville, Ky., came to Brownville, May 1855, and was appointed first U. S. Dist. Attorney for the Southern District. He m. Mrs. R. L. Jackley and they moved to Texas in a wagon. He served in the Confederate Army and remained an unreconstructed rebel till his death in 1902. - Morton-Watkins, II, pp. 5-6.
   (t) J. Sterling Morton, b. Jefferson Co., N. Y., Apr. 22, 1832, came to Bellevue in Nov. 1854 and soon after removed to Nebraska City. He was Secretary of Agriculture in President Cleveland's cabinet.

   (w) Mastin W. Riden accompanied Judge Edward R. Harden from Georgia and served as clerk in his court. He was a member of the Second Territorial Legislature. - Same, I, p. 175.
   (x) Napoleon Bonaparte Giddings, b. 1816, Clark Co., Ky., m., Nov. 15, 1842, Armide Boone. He was the first delegate to Congress from Nebraska, but soon returned to Missouri. He served in the Texan War of Independence, the Mexican War, and the Civil War. - Same, I, pp. 190- 1.
   (y) James Harris Masters, b. Warren Co., Ky., Aug. 15, 1819, came to Nebraska City, Dec. 1854. The next March he started the first commercial nursery in Nebraska. He married three times.- Nebraska City News, June 15, 1909. See also Andreas, p. 1225.
