Pioneer Stories of Cass County

(Letter inserted in booklet)

Murray, Nebr, Nov. 7, 1944.

Dear Mrs. Ingram:

Your letter received regarding some early history in Cass county.

Plattswouth is the oldest town in the county. Libeas T. Coon operated a ferry boat at this point for the Mormons in 1848 in their journey westward. It was not until in May 1854 that white settlers were permitted to cross the river into the territory west of the Missouri without a permit and such permit was issued to James O'Niel and Martin and they crossed the river with their log cabins on the ice in 1853 and opened a store near what is now main and first street in Plattsmouth. I am sending you our Cass County Historical magazine and on page 38 is a history of James O'Niel by his Daughter.

Louisville was maped (sic) as a paper town in February 1857 and Gardener Powers who settled on this as a claim was the only resident in a small log cabin. In 1870 J. T. A. Hoover opened a store here and was appointed the first P. M. and from the date the town developed rapidly.

The town was no doubt named Louisville in memory of some town the proprietors had left in the east.

Hoping these few items may aid you

Yours sincerely

G. H. Gilmorr (signature)
