He was married to Anna Marguerite Hansen, at Hampton, Nebraska, and there are four children of this marriage, as follows: Anna, born August 12, 1881; Martin, born November 1, 1883; Ella, born October 5, 1892, and Sena, born August 3, 1895.

Gustav Frank Beschorner

Gutav (sic) Frank Beschorner, insurance man and fraternal worker, is a native of Herautz, Moravia, Austria, born May 28, 1880. He is the son of Anton and Rosalia (Kaupe) Beschorner. Anton Beschorner was born at Herautz, on April 14, 1837, and engaged in farming and in the transfer business. He died at his birthplace on February 1, 1904. His wife, Rosalia, was born at Landskron, Bohemia, Austria, June 5, 1849. Of the German race, her family lives in present day Czechoslovakia. She came to America in 1904, and is still living.

During the time he has been in America Mr. Beschorner has served in various capacities - as a student, bookeeper, traveling salesman, editor, auditor, and insurance salesman, in which last he is now engaged. During the sessions of 1915, 1917, and 1918 he was bookkeeper of the Nebraska state senate, and during 1916 to 1917 he was editor of Die Welt-Post, German weekly at Lincoln.

On October 23, 1913, he was married to Clara Amanda Bartzat at Lincoln. Mrs. Beschorner, who was born at Lincoln on June 27, 1890, died there on October 6, 1918. There are two daughters, Elsie Mathilda, born September 8, 1914, and Frieda, born November 7, 1917, died November 28, 1917.

A member of the United Lutheran Church in America, he served as representative of the National Lutheran Council on the staff of the American Relief Administration (Hoover organization) in Russia from January to December, 1922, and supervisor of 95 kitchens operating to feed 22,000 children in the famine district of the German Volga, Republic in the Soviet Union.

He is a member of the United Commercial Travelers, the Sons of Herman, the Eagles, and the Blue Lodge, Royal Arch Chapter (of which he is a past high priest), Royal and Select Council (of which he is a Past Master), Knight Templar and Shrine bodies of Masonry in Lincoln. Residence: Lincoln.

John George Beste

John G. Beste was born in Cedar County, Nebraska, June 28, 1881, the son of Theodore and Catherine (Brocke) Beste. His father, who was a farmer, served as county commissioner of Cedar County for nine years; he was born in Westphalia, Germany, March 14, 1850, and died at Hartington, Cedar County, Nebraska, January 20, 1930; he came to this country in 1869. His mother was born of German parentage, at Wheeling, West Virginia, January 4, 1853, and died in Cedar County, January 13, 1887.

Mr. Beste received his education in the grade and high schools at Hartington. He has been engaged in banking since 1902, and today is vice president of the First National Bank of Hartington. A Democrat, he served as a member of the board of education for six years, was mayor of Hartington one term, and city councilman several terms.

During the World War he was county chairman of the United War Work in Cedar County. He is director in the Chamber of Commerce, is a member of the Red Cross, and is affiliated with Holy Trinity Catholic Church. He holds membership in the Nebraskana Society, and has held the various positions in the Knights of Columbus. His hobby is mechanics.

On June 27, 1906. he was married to Lucy Maud Morrison, at Vermilion, South Dakota. Mrs. Beste was born at Vermilion, April 27, 1883. They have two children;. Myrtle C., born January 17, 1912; and Dorothy, born July 15, 1913. Residence: Hartington.

Charles Fred Beushausen

Born in New York, New York, August 23, 1876, Charles Fred Beushausen came to Nebraska with his parents August and Mathilda (Beck) Beushausen, fifty-two years ago. His father, born in Hamburg, Germany, in 1840, came to America where he became a farmer, settling near Ashton, in Sherman County in the fall of 1878. He was a soldier in the German army before his immigration His death occurred at Loup City, June 24, 1914. His wife Mathilda, born in Baden Baden, Germany, died at Loup City, December 14, 1914.

Charles Fred Beushausen attended country school was graduated from high school at Ashton, and was a student at Lincoln Normal University one year. He taught in a sod school house the first of a three year term, and later was manager for the E. G. Taylor Grain Company. In 1906 he was elected county clerk on the Democratic ticket, being re-elected in 1908. For nine years dating from September, 1912, he served as postmaster of Loup City.

Mr. Beushausen was elected to the Nebraska house of representatives in the fall of 1922, and filed for lieutenant governor of Nebraska in November, 1931. He is at the present time the owner and publisher of the Sherman County Times, is secretary of the Loup City Community Club, secretary of the Board of Education, secretary of the Sherman County Fair Association and treasurer of the Loup City Township library.

During the World War Mr. Beushausen was chairman for war Saving Stamp drives, county chairman of Y. M. C. A. drives and county chairman of the 5th Liberty Loan. He is a member of the Methodist Church, is past president of the Rotary Club, a Mason, Modern Woodman of America, an Odd Fellow and a Knight of Pythias. He is a life member of the Nebraskana Society, and his favorite sport is golf. Residence: Loop City. (Photograph on Page 119).

John Harrie Beveridge

John Harrie Beveridge, superintendent of schools at Omaha, was born in Highland County, Ohio, January 21, 1869, son of John Thomas and Eliza E. (Steen) Beveridge.

Mr. Beveridge attended the public school and in 1892 received the Bachelor of Science degree from the National Normal University at Lebanon, Ohio. He received the Masters degree from Ohio University, which university, in 1917, made him a Doctor of Pedagogy. In 1915 Mr. Beveridge received the Master of Arts degree from Columbia University.

On July 7, 1897, he was married to Florence M. Haselton. Their children are Lenore and Wendell.

From 1897 until 1902, Mr. Beveridge was principal of schools at Glidden, Iowa, and from 1902 until 1908, was superintendent at Missouri Valley, Iowa. Coming to Council Bluffs, in 1908, he served as superintendent there until 1917. Since July 1, 1917, he has held his present position of superintendent of the schools of Omaha.

Mr. Beveridge is a member of the Department of Superintendents, the Nebraska State Teachers' Association, the Nebraska Schoolmasters' Club, the National Editorial Association, and the Masons. Residence: Omaha.

John Henry Bexten

John Henry Bexten, accountant and banker, was born at Quincy, Illinois, February 6, 1860, and for the past fifty-two years has been a resident of Nebraska. He is the son of Henry Hermann and Fredericka W. (Kipp) Bexten. Henry Bexten was born in Germany, August 30, 1833. He was a merchant and farmer, and came to Amer-

ica in 1852. He died at Omaha, February 1, 1906. Frederica (Kipp) Bexten was born in Germany, December 25. 1838, and died at Omaha, May 26, 1930.

Educated in the public schools of Quincy, until 1872, Mr. Bexten came to Nebraska in March, 1878. He started his business career as bookkeeper for Henry Ruff & Company of Quincy. From January 1, 1880, to December 1. 1994. he was confidential bookkeeper for Haines Brothers Company. On December 21, 1886, he entered the First National Bank of Omaha, and on the date of his retirement, January 10, 1929, held the position of cashier. He is director and treasurer of Carter Lake Club and director and treasurer of Stuntz Hall Association.

His marriage to Martha Abbie Noyes was solemnized at Hastings, Nebraska, December 25, 1882. Mrs. Bexten was born in Illinois, February 25, 1863. There are three children, J. H. Edward, born at Omaha, December 25, 1883, who died March 4, 1885; Louis Noyes, born at Hastings, July 17, 1885, teacher at Omaha Central High School, and graduate of Armour School of Technology at Chicago; and L. Merta, born at Omaha, May 15, 1887.

Mr. Bexten is a Republican. He is affiliated with Trinity Methodist Episcopal Church. His fraternal organizations include the Knights of Pythias and the Fraternal Aid Union. His favorite sport is bowling and his hobby is reading. Residence: Omaha.

John Beynon

Since 1912, John Beynon has been active in the business affairs of Burwell, Nebraska. He was born at Willow Springs, Nebraska, January 3, 1887, the son of David Saunders and Christina Jennie (Corneli) Beynon, the former a druggist at Burwell, for over 38 years, and later postmaster there. His father, whose ancestry was Welsh, was born at Albia, Iowa, December 5, 1856, and died at Douglas, Wyoming, July 10, 1926. His mother was born of German and Irish parents at Albia, April 21, 1868.

Mr. Beynon was graduated from the Burwell High School in 1903, was a clothing merchant for a time, engaged in the drug business for several years, and since 1917 has been the owner and manager of a grocery establishment. He is a member of the Red Cross, Masonic Lodge, and the Nebraskana Society, and for a number of years was president of the local School Board.

On June 26, 1910, he was married to Alvena C. Grunkemeyer at Burwell. Mrs. Beynon, whose ancestry was German, was born at Phillips, Nebraska, March 7, 1889. They have one daughter, Gwendolyn, born September 28, 1914, who was graduated from the Burwell High School in 1932.

Mr. Beynon is a Republican. His favorite sports are baseball and football. Residence: Burwell.

Dana Xenophon Bible

Dana X. Bible, football coach at the University of Nebraska, was born at Jefferson City, Jefferson County, Tennessee, October 8, 1891. His father, Jonathan David Bible, who was born at Mosheim, Cooke County, Tennessee, October 9, 1863, is a teacher and farmer; his ancestry is Scotch-Irish. His mother was born of German parentage at Washburn, Grainger County, Tennessee, October 19, 1870.

Mr. Bible was graduated from the high school at Jefferson City, and later was a student at Carson-Newman College, the University of North Carolina, Ohio State University, and Center College. He was graduated with the A. B. degree from Carson-Newman, in 1912, where he won his college letters in football, basketball, and baseball, H. is a member of Delta Kappa Epsilon Fraternity. He coached at Mississippi College, L. S. U., Texas A. and M., and is now head coach of football at the University of Nebraska. He has written various athletic articles for magazines and newspapers.

He was united in marriage with Rowena Rhodes at Fort Worth, Tarrant County, Texas, December 19, 1923. Mrs. Bible was born at Bryan, Brazos County, Texas, January 17, 1892. They have one daughter, Barbara Nancy, born March 25, 1929.

Mr. Bible was a lieutenant in the air service, serving overseas with the 22nd Aero Squadron during the World War. He is a member of the Lincoln Red Cross, the Chamber of Commerce, and the Lincoln Rotary Club. He is trustee of the Football Coaches Association of America. His social clubs are the University Club and the Lincoln Country Club. He is a member of the Masons, and a Shriner. His religious affiliation is with the First Baptist Church at Lincoln. He is interested in golf and all college sports. He is a Republican. Residence: Lincoln.

Clarence Hanks Bickel

On March 6, 1886, Clarence H. Bickel was born in Independence, Kansas. His father, Charley C. Bickel, was born at Graham, Missouri, on April 13, 1884; he is a contractor. Mary S. Hanks, his mother, was born at Nebraska City on February 7, 1870, and died in Lincoln, on August 10, 1919.

Mr. Bickel was graduated from Nebraska Wesleyan University with a Bachelor of Arts degree. On May 5, 1909, he was married to Mabel A. Overton, who was born at Nebraska City, November 9, 1887; she is of English descent. The Bickels have two children, Grace, born April 19, 1910, and Myron, born February 7, 1913.

For many years Mr. Bickel has been active as a Mason; he is a member of the First Methodist Episcopal Church of Lincoln. In politics he affiliates with the Democratic party. He was formerly a member of the state democratic committee. He engaged in banking from 1909 to 1923. He is now manager of the thrift department for the Lincoln Liberty Life Insurance Company. Residence: Lincoln.

Harold Bickford

On December 13, 1899, Harold Bickford was born at Curtis, Frontier County, Nebraska, the son of John William and Frances (Baxter) Bickford. His father, who was born at Plymouth, Hancock County, Illinois, April 20, 1860, was a railroad agent in the early days in Nebraska; and was a member of the town board of Curtis, and Smithfield, Nebraska. His paternal grandfather was of pure English stock; his paternal grandmother, who was born at Baltimore, Maryland, was of Holland Dutch descent. He died at Lincoln, Lancaster County, Nebraska, June 22, 1922.

His mother was born in Schuyler County, Illinois, January 29, 1865. Her maternal ancestors were prominent in the history of Virginia. She is of English, Scotch, Welsh, and Irish ancestry.

Mr. Bickford attended the public schools of Smithfield, Kenesaw, and Lincoln, and in 1919 was graduated from the Lincoln High School. He was awarded his LL. B. degree at the University of Nebraska in 1923, where he was elected to membership in Phi Alpha Delta, Acacia, and Delta Phi Gamma. He has been engaged in the practice of law at Lincoln since his admission to the bar on June 1, 1923, and his lived in Nebraska all his life.

His marriage to Marjorie Frances Cooper was solemnized at Seward, Nebraska, January 23, 1926. Mrs. Bickford, who was born at Geneva, Nebraska, September 7. 1902, is in the society department of the Nebraska State Journal. Her maternal grandparents were members of the Fulton and Burleigh families of Ohio and Pennsylvania.

Mr. Bickford is a member of the Nebraska State Bar Association and the Lancaster County Bar Association. He holds membership in the Cosmopolitan Luncheon Club: at Lincoln. He is a Mason, Scottish Rite and Shrine; and an Elk. He is a Republican. Residence: Lincoln.

Marjorie Frances Cooper Bickford

Marjorie Bickford, a resident of this state all her life, was born at Geneva, September 7, 1902, the daughter of George B. and Tessa Ruth (Fulton) Cooper. Her father, who is a salesman, was born at Canton, Illinois, December 13, 1874; he is descended from English ancestors who went to Holland as religious dissenters and came to America with the Dutch in colonial times; two Cooper brothers settled in this country, one in New York, and one in Pennsylvania, and George Cooper is descended from the latter branch.

Her mother was born at New Boston, Illinois, December 4, 1875. She is descended through the maternal side from the Burleighs, of Ohio, who originally came from Scotland, and Ireland; the Fultons were Irish, and settled in Indiana and Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania.

Mrs. Bickford was graduated from the Lincoln High School in 1919, and in 1923, received the A. B. degree from the University of Nebraska where she was a member of Phi Omega Pi. For several years she has been connected with the society department of the Nebraska State Journal at Lincoln. She is a member of the Nebraskana Society.

On January 26, 1926, she was united in marriage with Harold Bickford at Seward, Nebraska. Mr. Bickford, who is a lawyer, was born at Curtis, Nebraska, December 13, 1899. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Bickford, were pioneers in western Nebraska, the former serving as station agent for the Burlington Railroad for many years. Residence: Lincoln.

James C. Bierbower

James C. Bierbower, newspaper man, was born at Arrowsmith, Illinois, October 21, 1886, son of Jonathan and Margaret J. (Cavett) Bierbower.

The father was born in Brown County, Ohio, September 10, 1845, and died at Giltner, June 23, 1923. He served with Company B, 39th Illinois Volunteer Infantry in the Civil War, and at the time of his death was a retired farmer. His wife, Margaret, was born in Posey County, Indiana, October 24, 1851, and died at Giltner, August 2, 1914. Her ancestry was English.

Mr. Bierbower was graduated from Giltner High School in 1906, and afterward attended Fremont College, York College, and Kearney normal school. For six years thereafter he was a public school teacher, and since June 12, 1912, has been editor and publisher of the Giltner Gazette. He is an independent Republican.

On August 6, 1919, he was married to Margaret B. Luby, at Harvard. Mrs. Bierbower was born at Giltner, January 8, 1897, of Irish and American ancestry. Seven children were born to their union, six of whom are still living: June M., born July 29, 1920; Margaret E., born December 9, 1921; James J., born March 17, 1923; Dorothy Joan, born July 21, 1924; Mary Lou, born March 31, 1926; Robert L., born October 28, 1927; Barbara Jean, born April 6, 1929, who died December 27, 1929.

Mr. Bierbower served in the World War. He is a member of the Ancient Free and Accepted Masons, of the Modern Woodmen of America, and The Nebraskana Society. He is fond of all forms of athletics. Residence: Giltner.

Elmer Henry Biermann

Elmer H. Biermann, a banker in Nebraska, for time past 17 years, was born at Dakota City, January 3, 1895, the son of William and Sophie (Runge) Biermann. His father, a retired farmer, was born at Steimbke, Germany, December 18, 1866. His mother was born at Steimbke, August 10, 1869.

Mr. Biermann was graduated from the Sioux City High School, Iowa, in 1913, and later was a student at Capitol City Commercial College at Des Moines, Iowa. He has been cashier and director of the bank of Dakota City, Nebraska, and has been engaged in the insurance business at South Sioux City for a number of years.

He is a member of the South Sioux City Commercial Club, the Nebraskana Society, and the American Legion. He is affiliated with the Salem German Lutheran Church at Dakota City. During the World War he served as sergeant major of the 8th ammunition train, and was active in loan drives.

On September 8, 1926, he was married to Maurine Agatha Pomeroy, at South Sioux City. Mrs. Biermann, who is of Scotch-Irish descent, was born at Ponca, Dixon, County, Nebraska, December 16, 1898. Residence: South Sioux City.

Anson Hardin Bigelow

Anson Hardin Bigelow, prominent lawyer, was born at Buckley, Illinois, August 23, 1867, son of Anson Hardin and Mary (Brazeil) Bigelow.

The father was born in Rochester, New York. August 12. 1832, and died at Omaha, November 24, 1914. The Bigelow family coming to America in 1652, from England, settled first in Connecticut and Massachusetts. Mary Brazeil was born in Londonderry, Ireland, April 18, 1839, and died at Beaver Falls, Minnesota, in May, 1886. Her ancestry was Irish and French. Her father was one of the earliest pioneers of Renville County.

Mr. Bigelow was graduated from Omaha High School in 1884, and received the Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Nebraska in 1887, and the Bachelor of Laws degree from Creighton in 1912.

On January 1, 1891, he was married to Margaret Hynes at Omaha. Mrs. Bigelow was born in Pittston, Pennsylvania, July 21, 1867, and was killed in the tornado at Omaha, on March 23, 1913. There is one daughter of this marriage, Ellen Lucile, who married Leo A. Paige. His marriage to Harriet LeMaster Agnew was solemnized on February 22, 1914. She has the following children, Portia Lee, who married Benjamin A. Arkin; Ilma, who married West B. Bonnifield; and Thomas Joseph.

In 1891, Mr. Bigelow served as clerk of the house of representatives. In 1919 he was elected a member of the Constitutional Convention of 1919-20. He was elected a member of the South Dakota house of representatives, in 1911, was candidate for congress on the Republican primary of 1914, and a delegate to the Progressive National Convention of 1916, and a member of its platform committee, from Nebraska.

In 1922, Mr. Bigelow was a candidate for United States Senator on the Progressive ticket. He is the author of the following, Elements of Arithmetic (1911 Bigelow and Arnold); Trust Relationship Between Corporation Directors and Stockholders (Central Law Journal, June, 1912) ; Model Parliamentary House in Law Schools (Central Law Journal, 1914).

Mr. Bigelow is a member of the First Presbyterian Church, the Elks, Modern Woodmen of America, and Royal Highlanders. Residence: Omaha.

Edward Marvin Bigelow

Edward Marvin Bigelow, insurance and real estate operator, was born at Newport, Minnesota, October 25, 1869, son of Gilbert Marvin and Matilda (Cooley) Bigelow. Gilbert M. Bigelow was born in Bellow Falls, Vermont, April I, 1834, and served in the Civil War with the Union army. He died at Aspen, Colorado, January 18, 1899. His wife, Matilda, was born in Champlain, New York, in 1835, and died at Newport, in 1880.

Mr. Bigelow attended public school and supplemented his education by night school study. From 1889 until 1905, he was the owner of a steam laundry. From that time until 1917, he was the owner of the Bigelow Gas Light Company. Since 1917 he has been engaged in the real estate and insurance business. From 1920 until
