made the long and arduous journey to Nebraska by way of covered wagon, and later traveled to California and back in the same manner. His step-father served as post surgeon at Fort Kearney, Nebraska, when the state was still a partly settled country.

Mr. Carpenter is a member of the Modern Woodmen of America, the National Geographic Society, and the Nebraskana Society. His hobby is music, and he is interested in architecture.

On September 17, 1888, he married Hattie Amelia Cotten at Lowell. Mrs. Carpenter, who is assistant postmaster at Lowell, was born of Scotch, English and Irish extraction, in Fayette County, Iowa, October 8, 1871. They have the following children: Edwin F., born October 4, 1889; Roy I., born January 25, 1891; Viola A., born June 22, 1892; Berniece C., born March 24, 1901, and Arthur E., born December 3, 1893. Residence: Lowell.


Janet Louise Carpenter

Janet Louise Carpenter, educator, was born at Sturbridge, Massachusetts, June 28, 1871, of pre-Revolutionary English stock. Her father, Henry Merritt Carpenter, who is still living, was born at Southbridge, Massachusetts, December 8, 1839. In early life he learned the carriage trimming trade, and was later a harness maker. During the Civil War he served with Company B, 15th Massachusetts Infantry. His wife, Sophronia Allen (Fuller) Carpenter, was born at Sturbridge, September 4, 1842, and died at Hastings, January 9, 1906. Her family, as well as her husband's was represented by soldiers in the Revolutionary War.

Educated in the public schools of Marengo, Iowa, from 1880-84, Miss Carpenter was a student at Hastings, from 1884-88; received her A. B. in 1892, and her A. M. in 1895, from Hastings College; and attended summer school at the University of Chicago, 1899, 1902, 1913, 1924; the University of Washington, 1917, and the University of Colorado, the summer of 1928. Miss Carpenter is a member of Pi Gamma Mu, honorary sociological fraternity.

During the years 1895 to 1899, Miss Carpenter taught Latin and Greek at Highland College in Kansas, and from 1899 to 1906 was teacher of Greek at Kansas City University. Becoming a member of the faculty of Hastings College in 1906, Miss Carpenter is now head of its English department.

She is especially devoted to reading in physics and economies, is affiliated with the First Presbyterian Church at Hastings, and is a member of The Nebraskana Society, and the Hastings Library Board. Residence, Hastings.


Milton Henry Carrig

One of Nebraska's professional leaders is Milton Henry Carrig who has been engaged in the practice of medicine and surgery at Stuart, for the past eight years. He was born in Platte County, Nebraska, April 21, 1900, the son of Charles Joseph and Elizabeth (Haney) Carrig. His father, who was born in Platte County, January 21, 1868, is a livestock dealer and landower. His mother, whose ancestry is Irish, was born in Platte County, March 19, 1868.

Dr. Carrig attended St. Bonaventure Parochial School at Columbus, Nebraska, was graduated from the high school at Columbus, in 1918, and received the B. S. degree at Creighton University at Omaha, in 1922. He was awarded the M. D. degree at Creighton University in 1924 where he was president of the Eta Chapter of Phi Rho Sigma in 1924.

He is a member of the Holt County Medical Society, the Nebraska State Medical Society, and the American Medical Society. He is a fourth degree member of the Knights of Columbus, is affiliated with St. Boniface Catholic Church, and holds membership in the Lions International. During the World War he was a member of the Students Army Training Corps at Creighton University, and at this time holds membership in the American Legion.

His marriage to Louise Patricia Kerz was solemnized at Chicago, May 24, 1928. Mrs. Carrig, whose ancestry is German, was born at Galena, Illinois, October 28, 1903. They have one son, James Arnold, born September 9, 1928. Residence: Stuart.


John Anthony Carrigan

John A. Carrigan, who has practiced law at Blair Nebraska, for the past seven years, has always resided in Nebraska. He was born at Blair, July 2, 1901, the son of Edmund Burke and Frances Margaret Carrigan. His father, who was district judge, was born at Blair, November 2, 1869, and was a pioneer lawyer in Nebraska; he died at Blair, December 8, 1927. His mother was born in Pennsylvania, April 26, 1871. His grandfather, John A. Carrigan, practiced law at Blair for twenty years.

Mr. Carrigan was graduated from the Blair High School in 1918, and received the LL. B. degree at the University of Michigan, where he was a member of Beta Theta Pi and Phi Alpha Delta. He was a student at the University of Nebraska for a time. Since June 24, 1924, he has been engaged in the practice of law at Blair. A Republican, he served as county chairman of the Hoover-Curtis Campaign Club, and is vitally interested in the political affairs of his state and community. He holds membership in St. Mary's Episcopal Church at Blair; and is a Mason, Royal Arch, Knight Templar. Residence: Blair.


Frank Leslie Carroll

Frank L. Carroll was born at Tecumseh, Johnson County, Nebraska, the son of Charles Calvin and Maria (Sherman) Carroll. His father, who was a farmer, was born at Lowell, Massachusetts, October 26, 1844, and died at Canton, Illinois, January 5, 1915; he served in the 8th Missouri Infantry and the 11th Illinois Cavalry during the Civil War. Maria Sherman Carroll was born at Mansfield, Ohio, November, 1850, and died at Canton, May 10, 1908. Her family was related to the families of General Sherman and Senator Sherman.

Mr. Carroll attended the rural schools of Illinois, and the Canton High School. He owned and operated the Ashland Gazette and the St. Paul Republican for some time, and is now president of the Sun Publishing Company, and is editor of the Schuyler Sun at Schuyler, Nebraska. From 1899 to May 1908 he served at postmaster at Manito, Illinois. A Republican, he served a short term in the Nebraska legislature in 1923, when Governor McKelvie appointed him to succeed Donald McLeod in special session to reduce appropriations. He has lived in Nebraska for 22 years. He is a member of the Schuyler Chamber of Commerce, the Nebraskana Society, and Holy Trinity Episcopal Church at Schuyler. He is a Mason and Modern Woodman of America. His favorite sport is golf.

His marriage to Besse Lee Carman was solemnized at Princeville, Peoria County, Illinois, November 23, 1898. Mrs. Carroll was born at Princeville, April 1, 1884. Her maternal ancestors who were of the Hyde family, came from England. Residence: Schuyler.


Thomas William Carroll

Thomas William Carroll was born at Manitowoc, Wisconsin, November 10, 1872. Richard Carroll, his father, a farmer, was born in Ireland, and died at Holdrege, Phelps County, Nebraska, April 3, 1891. Mary (Clark) Carroll was born in Ireland and died at Holdrege, April 1, 1891.

Mr. Carroll received his early education in the public and high schools at Holdrege. Later he was a student at the Orleans Business College. He has lived in Ne-

braska for the past 42 years and has been prominent politically for many years. He is a special agent and insurance adjuster. He served as sheriff of Harlan County Nebraska, three terms was deputy United States marshal for the district of Nebraska, eight years; federal prohibition agent 1921-23, and was state sheriff of Nebraska, 1923-25. He is a Democrat.

On November 15, 1893, his marriage to May Travis was solemnized at Orleans, Harlan County, Nebraska. Mrs. Carroll was born at Peterboro, Ontario, Canada, September 27, 1873. Eight children were born to this union: Frances, who married Francis J. Kane. She died January 27, 1924. Raymond L., who married Alta J. Nelson; Helena, who married William J. Griffin; Mary, who married R. F. Moran; Irene, who married M. H. Layton; Genevieve; Joseph; and Thomas.

He is a member of the Knights of Columbus, 4th degree, and is a Modern Woodman of America. For six years he was a member of the board of education at Alma, and was its president for two years. He is interested in all athletics. He is a member of St. Mary's Cathedral at Lincoln. Residence: Lincoln.


Stewart Edgar Carskadon

Stewart Edgar Carskadon was born at Dunkinsville, Adams County, Ohio, July 4, 1877, the son of William and Charlotte (Jones) Carskadon. His father, who was a farmer, was born at Manchester, Ohio, October 21, 1836, and died at Wilcox, Nebraska, December 3, 1931. His mother was born at Manchester, October 20, 1840, and died at Wilcox, April 15, 1920.

Mr. Carskadon has delivered mail on the same route for the past 29 years at Wilcox. He is a member of the Parent-Teachers' Association, was formerly president of the school board, and holds membership in the following fraternal organizations: Ancient Order of United Workmen; Order of Eastern Star; Rebekahs; Masons; Modern Woodmen of America; and the Independent Order of Odd Fellows.

On February 25, 1902, Mr. Carskadon was married to Sadie Coridella Whitlatch at Holdrege, Nebraska. Mrs. Carskadon was born at Parkersburg, Virginia, February 16, 1884. She is a member of the Eastern Star, Rebekahs, R. N. A., and the Community Church. They have five children: Jennie Lucille, born September 19, 1911, who married Kenneth W. Beahm, and is living on a farm near Ragan, Nebraska; Helen Elizabeth, born October 29, 1913; Phillip Edgar, born March 30, 1918; Paul Herman, born February 17, 1920, who died January 7, 1921; and Margaret Eleanor, born August 5, 1924. James Charles Carson

James Charles Carson, president of the Carson Ranch, incorporated, was born in County Monaghan, Ireland, July 4, 1864, and for the past 50 years has resided in Nebraska.

His father, Charles Leslie Carson, was born in County Monaghan, and died there in 1900. He was a farmer and linen manufacturer, of Scotch-Irish ancestry. His mother, Matilda Kidd, was born in County Armagh, Ireland, and died in County Monaghan, in 1903. Her ancestry was also Scotch-Irish.

James Charles Carson attended public school at Castle Shane, Ireland, and Model School in County Monaghan.

For 20 years after coming to America Mr. Carson was a hardware salesman, and was a director of the corporation which he represented. He is at the present time extensively engaged in ranching as above. During the late war Mr. Carson was active in Liberty loan drives, in registering citizens for the military draft, and as a member of the Food Conservation Committee. He is a member of the Presbyterian Church, the Masons, and his clubs include the Omaha Club and the Omaha Athletic Club. His hobbies are reading and hunting.

His marriage to Maud Hunter was solemnized at Brooklyn in July, 1920. Mrs. Carson is a native of Warren, Ohio. Residence: Irwin.


Rosanna Carson

Rosanna Carson, prominent woman executive of Nebraska, was born at Brownville, Nebraska, June 4, 1872, the daughter of John Lind and Mary (Masters) Carson. Her father, who was born at Mercersburg. Pennsylvania, August 30, 1832, and died at Lincoln, December 30, 1897, was a pioneer Nebraska banker, who served as captain of the commissary department during the Civil War. His father and mother were James Oliver Carson and Rosanna Marshall (White) Carson; and his grandfather and mother, David Carson and Jean Oliver Carson, who came from Ulster, Ireland; the Whites, who were English, were natives of Maryland find New Jersey.

Miss Carson's mother was born in Wayne County, Ohio, July 20, 1835, and died at Lincoln, December 31, 1901; she was the daughter of John and Mary Caven Masters, who moved from Wayne County, Ohio, to Oregon, Missouri.

Miss Carson was graduated from Miss Aiken's School for Young Ladies in June, 1891, and later attended the University of Nebraska where she was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta. She is now vice president of the Carson National Bank of Auburn, Nebraska. During the World War she was state chairman of the Young Women's Christian Association. She holds membership in the Red Cross; Native Sons and Daughters of Nebraska; University Club of Lincoln; Country Club; Athenea Club; Lotus Club; Copper Kettle Club, and the Nebraskana Society. She is a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Lincoln; and holds membership in the Colonial Dames and the Daughters of the American Revolution. She is a Republican. Residence: Lincoln.


Fred Louis Carsten

Fred L. Carsten was born on a farm near Avoca, Otoe County, Nebraska, November 25, 1886, the son of Louis and Sarah Selma (Haeffner) Carsten. His father, who was born at Dunbar, Otoe County, Nebraska, July 19, 1863, is a retired farmer, now living in Avoca. His ancestry is French on the maternal side; his father was German.

His mother was born at Alsace Lorraine, France, September 22, 1864, and died at Omaha, Nebraska, February 22, 1928.

He attended Iowa Wesleyan at Mount Pleasant, Iowa, and the Lincoln Business College at Lincoln, Nebraska. He has lived in Nebraska for 44 years and has been a farmer all his life. He was united in marriage with Nancy Ethel Fleshman at Omaha, Nebraska, May 3, 1911. Mrs. Carsten, who was born at Avoca, December 17, 1887, is the daughter of pioneers who came to Nebraska from Indiana in 1885. Her father was a Civil War veteran. They have one son, Calvin, born November 11, 1915.

During the war Mr. Carsten was chairman of the Liberty Loan sales committee. He is a member of the Red Cross; the Parents Teachers' Association; the library board at Avoca, and is president of the Cass County Fair Association, serving his third term. He is a member of the Nebraskana Society, a Mason, and an Odd Fellow. He is a member of the Congregational Church and superintendent of Sunday School. His favorite sport is golf, and his hobby is horses. He is a Democrat. Residence; Avoca.

Clifford Dorwin Carter

C. Dorwin Carter was born at Alexandria, Thayer county, Nebraska, August 4, 1903, the son of William G., and Silvia Mary (Dinnis) Carter. His father, who is a real estate man, was born in Illinois; his ancestry is English. His mother was born in Missouri; she is of English and Irish descent.

Mr. Carter attended the grade school of Table Rock, Nebraska, and later was graduated from the high school at Hebron, Nebraska. He was a student at Peru State Teachers' College, and was awarded his B. S. degree at the university of Nebraska, where he later took graduate work for his master's degree in education. He attended the University of Notre Dame for a time. He is a member of Phi Epsilon Kappa. He was granted college letters in football at Peru; served as allstate college guard in 1923; and was a member of the football squad at the university of Nebraska in 1930.

He was superintendent of the Orafino Consolidated School, 1924-27; was superintendent of the Honey Creek Consolidated School at Salem, Nebraska, 1927-28; and is now superintendent of schools at Dorchester, Nebraska. He is a member of the School Men's Association, and the Nebraska State Teachers' Association. He is a Mason. He is affiliated with the Presbyterian Church of Hebron.

He was united in marriage with Opal May Jackson, at Sidney, Fremont County, Iowa, July 19, 1924. Mrs. Carter, who was born at Woodston, Kansas, April 24, 1905, is a music teacher; her ancestry is English and Irish. Residence: Dorchester. (Photograph on Page 220).


Edward Francis Carter

Edward Francis Carter, judge of the District Court of the 17th Judicial District of Nebraska, was born at Middlebranch, Nebraska, March 11, 1897, son of Edward Charles and Allie Margaret (Waring) Carter. The father was born in New Jersey, April 9, 1870, and is a miller of English descent. The mother, who is of Scotch descent, was born in Iowa, August 12, 1878.

Mr. Carter attended the public and high schools of Beaver City, and in June, 1919, received the Bachelor of Law degree from the University of Nebraska. There he was a member of the Order of the Coif and Phi Alpha Delta. From 1919 until April, 1927, he engaged in the practice of law at Bayard.

A Republican, he was county chairman of the Republican county central committee in 1924-26, was a candidate for county attorney of Morrill County 1922, 1926, and on April 26, 1927, was appointed district judge by Governor Adam McMullen. In 1928, he was re-elected, and in 1932 is a candidate for that office.

On June 2, 1920, he was married to Vera Marie Hofrichter at Bruning. Mrs. Carter was born at Bellwood, February 12, 1899, of German descent. She is the daughter of Benjamin and Martha (Mennenga) Hofrichter. Mrs. Carter is a member of the Eastern Star and the Woman's Club. They have four children, Dolores Jean, born July 23, 1921; Lyle A., born December 22, 1922; Edward F., born March 23, 1928; and Robert L., born March 24, 1932.

Among Judge Carter's professional organizations are, the American and Nebraska State and Scottsbluff Bar Associations, and the Western Nebraska Bar Association. He is a member of the Masons, the Knights of Pythias, the Scottsbluff Lions Club, and the Gering Chamber of Commerce, as well as the American Legion. During the World War, he served as a private in the United States Army. His clubs are the Seottsbluff and Gering Country Clubs, and his favorite sport is golf. Residence: Gering. George Alexander Carter

Born at Chicago, Illinois, December 4, 1868, George Alexander Carter is the son of James and Agnes (Low) Carter. His father, who was born near Dublin, Ireland, March 15, 1821, and died at Superior, Nebraska, July 19, 1897, was employed by the English Army in his youth as a horse trainer, and later moved to Chicago, where he was a member of the police force; he settled in Nuckolls County, Nebraska, in 1884.

His mother was born at Kerry Muir, Scotland, September 18, 1831, and died at Superior, August 17, 1906. She came to America in 1843, and settled at Peoria, Illinois, and later moved to Chicago. She organized the Valley Home Society at Superior.

Mr. Carter received his education in suburban schools of Chicago, and since 1884 has been a farmer and stockman near Superior. He is a member of the school board and Parent-Teachers' Association, is affiliated with the First Presbyterian Church of Superior, and holds membership in the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. He is especially interested in raising Angus cattle.

He married Jessie Margaret McConnell who was born at Washington, Iowa, April 14, 1869, and died at Superior, August 26, 1925. His marriage to Edna Worden occurred at Bovina Center, New York, September 10, 1927. They have two daughters, Marguerite Hattie and Enid Ann. Residence: Superior.


Harry Glenn Carter

Harry G. Carter, meteorologist of the United States Weather Bureau, was born in Dixon County, Nebraska, February 8, 1883, and has been a resident of this state practically all his life. His father, Emory E. Carter, was a school teacher and justice of the peace for many years. Anna Marie (Johnson) Carter, his mother, was a school teacher before her marriage.

Mr. Carter attended grade and high school at Ponca , Nebraska, and later took special work at the University of Nebraska. He entered the newspaper business at Ponca and later was a newspaper man at Ponca and Newcastle, Nebraska. In 1904 he entered the United States Weather Bureau; was appointed assistant director of the Nebraska section, 1913; and was authorized weather forecaster, February, 1918. Since 1918 he has been meteorologist and assistant director of the Nebraska section of the United States Weather Bureau. During 1929 he was instructor of meteorology and air navigation in the Mutual Flyers Club.

He is the author of various articles dealing with weather and climate, effect of weather on crops, rain insursurance (sic), and other meteorological studies. He was admitted to his profession at Lincoln, Lancaster County, Nebraska, November, 1918.

He was united in marriage with Grace Beatrice Fritts at Lincoln, September 5, 1905. Mrs. Carter, who was born at Peoria, Illinois, October 15, 1883, was a music teacher prior to marriage. Their children are: Richard E., born October 29, 1910, who is an observer in the United States Weather Bureau; and Dorothy G., born June 29, 1915, who is a student at Lincoln High School.

Mr. Carter volunteered for service in the World War but was exempted as a necessary government employee. He is a member of the Federal Business Association, of which he is secretary; the American Meteorological Society; and the Nebraska Academy of Science. He holds membership in the Nebraskana Society, and is affiliated with the Presbyterian Church. He is a Mason. He is a Republican. Residence: Lincoln. (Photograph in Album).


Lew Arthur Carter

Lew Arthur Carter, physician and surgeon, was born at Henderson, Iowa, November 20, 1875, son of Elijah Benjamin and Josie (Boswell) Carter. He received his medical degree from the Kansas City Hahnemann University and has been in active practice since 1903. He is a Republican and has held various minor offices.

On November 25, 1896, he was married to Lola V.
