a year and a half with the State Journal. In 1894 he went into business for himself under the firm name of George Brothers, Printers, of which he is still a member. He is also a director of the Cushman Motor Works. Since 1915 he has been active in good roads work, and has served in various capacities with organizations engaged in this work. He was chairman of the legislative committee on good roads when Nebraska first accepted federal aid in 1917 and is present chairman of this committee. A Republican, Mr. George was city councilman for seven years, and has been active in party politics. Mr. George is a member of the First Plymouth Congregational Church.

During the World War he was president of the Lincoln Chamber of Commerce, and for several years was a member of the board of directors. As a Rotarian he is a charter member of the Lincoln organization and was its first secretary and first statistician. Active in welfare work, he has contributed much effort to Community Chest, Boy Scouts and Y. M. C. A., and Y. W. C. A. drives. He is past president of the Lincoln Auto Club, and the D. L. D. Highway Association.

Mr. George is a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason and past potentate of Sesostris Temple of the Shrine, a member of the Royal Neighbors of America, the Royal Highlanders, the Macabees and the Modern Woodmen of America. He is a former member of the Izaak Walton League, an honorary member of the Lincoln Typographical Union, and a member of the Sons of Veterans and the Lincoln Fine Arts Association. His clubs are the Lincoln Country, the Fifty-Fifty Dancing Club and the Shrine Country Club, and is a member of the executive committee which planned and built the latter named club. Charles Canton George

Charles Canton George, prominent real estate operator, was born in Galesburg, Illinois, March 21, 1863, son of John Wesley and Mary Elizabeth (Younger) George.

He received his Bachelor of Science degree from Knox College in 1885, and his Master of Science in 1888. On Dcember (sic) 14, 1905, he was married to Idella Louise Hamun. She was born at Boston, Massachusetts, and was a graduate of Radcliffe College.

Mr. George is a Republican. He was a member of the firm of Potter & George for a number of years and is now president of George Brothers. For a number of years he has been active in banking and loan associations. He is a member of the Chamber of Commerce and a former director of that organization, and has been a director of the Community Chest for a number of years. He has been trustee of Knox College, and a member of the International Chamber of Commerce. His clubs are the Omaha Club, the University Club, the Country Club, and Happy Hollow Club. Residence: Omaha.


Idella Hamlin George

Idella H. George was born at Boston, Massachusetts, November 6, 1878, the daughter of Dana Billings and Helena (McCuaig) George. Her father was born at Waterford, Maine, August 22, 1839, and died at Boston, October 2, 1903. Her mother, whose ancestry was Scotch, was born April 4, 1849, and died at Omaha, March 4, 1926.

Mrs. George was a student at the Boston public school and a girls high school in Boston. In 1901 she received her A. B. degree at Radcliffe. She has made her home in Nebraska for the past 28 years.

On December 14, 1905, her marriage to Charles Carlton George was solemnized at Chicago, Illinois. Mr. George, who was born at Galesburg, Illinois, March 23, 1863, is of English descent. He is engaged in the real estate, insurance, and investment business. Their daughter, Mary, was born September 24, 1912. Residence: Omaha.


Jacob C. George

Jacob C. George was born near Hampton, Nebraska, February 8, 1878, the son of Christian and Rosena (Ormon) George. His father, who was born at Odessa, Russia, April 1, 1850, and died at Aurora, Nebraska, September 2, 1931, was a farmer. His mother was born at Odessa, October 22, 1853, and is still living.

Mr. George received his education in country schools. Today he is one of the leading farmers in Hamilton County, Nebraska, and is a member of the Farmers Union Store, serving as a board member for the past nine years. Since 1911, he has been a member of the school board.

He is affiliated with Hampton Methodist Church, and holds membership in the Nebraskana Society. During the World War he served in loan drives. On October 21, 1900, he was married to Elizabeth Nicholas at Stockholm, Nebraska. Mrs. George, whose ancestry is German, was born near Stockholm, September 13, 1877.

Their children are: Esther, born January 12, 1903, who married William Hahle; Elma, born March 7, 1905, who married Crystal Cook; Frances, born September 7, 1908; Mildred, born February 8, 1910; Ruth, born August 17, 1911; Willis, born March 2, 1913; and Edmond, born October 11, 1920. Esther and Elmer are farmers, Frances is a teacher, and the other children live at home. Residence: Hampton.


Lycurgus George

Born at Washington, Iowa, January 10, 1859, Lycurgus George is the son of William and Nancy Jane (Meek) George. William George was born in Carrol County, Ohio, in 1822 and came to Nebraska in 1883, after spending several years in Washington County, Iowa. He was a farmer at Bostwick until his death on March 17, 1904. His wife, Nancy Jane, was a native of Tuscarawas County, Ohio, born March 21, 1825, of Scotch-Irish descent. Her death occurred in Jewell County, Kansas, in October 1905.

Lycurgus George was educated in common schools, and came to Nebraska in 1892. With the exception of the years 1905-08 he has resided in the state in the same precinct and county. On October 6, 1887 he was united in marriage to Ella Emma Cook at Washington, Iowa. Mrs. George, who is of Scotch-Irish descent, was born at Huntsville, Ohio, June 5, 1859.

Four children were born to their union, Mary Agnes, August 19, 1888; William Floyd, June 19, 1892, who married Elma Dishman, and who died November 27, 1928; Acena, March 19, 1895, who married Virgil Dixon; and Frank Lycurgus, April 27, 1898, who married Fern I. Parsons.

Mr. George is a Republican. He is affiliated with the Bostwick Methodist Episcopal Church, and is a life member of The Nebraskana Society. He has served as precinct assessor for several terms. Residence: Bostwick.


William Hamby George

William Hamby George, one of Dakota County's outstanding farmers, was born in Lexington, Ohio, February 18, 1843, and died at his home in South Sioux City, September 12, 1912. He was the son of John B. and Eliza (Hittle) George, both natives of Pennsylvania.

John B. George was born at Frankfort, Pennsylvania, April 12, 1820, and died at Circleville, Ohio, December 27, 1845, when William Hamby George was less than two years of age. His wife, Eliza, was born in Obermilfort Township, Pennsylvania, December 23, 1816, and died at Circleville, Ohio, January 8, 1894. Both were of German descent, and John B. George was an ordained minister of the United Brethren Church.

Educated in common schools, Mr. George engaged in farming in Ohio, and in 1888, came to Nebraska where he continued this occupation. He had an enviable war record, having enlisted in the Union Army for the dur-

ation of the Civil War (1861-64). His service of three years and three month's was with the 64th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, under General Sherman. A member of the Grand Army of the Republic, he was a member also of the odd Fellows and The Nebraskana Society.

Always active in Democratic politics, Mr. George served his party well, and was elected delegate to the National Convention of 1908 at Kansas City. He was a participant in all projects for the betterment of his community and state, and among other things served as a member of the South Sioux City School Board 12 consecutive years.

On February 19, 1890, he was united in marriage to Libby Beck, at Waverly, Iowa. Mrs. George, who still survives him, was born in Cottage Grove, Illinois, January 24, 1856. To them were born five children, four of whom are living: Earl B., born February 9, 1891, married Minnie Larson; Glen G., born August 11, 1892, died April 4, 1924; Ralph H., born March 19, 1894, married Edna Falin; Gladys S., born November 9, 1897; and Marie R., born February 19, 1900. Residence: South Sioux City.


Herbert Franklin Gerald

Herbert F. Gerald, physician and educator of Omaha, Nebraska, was born at Turner Falls, Franklin County, Massachusetts, September 5, 1881. His father, Franklin Gerald, was born at Benton, Fairfield County, Maine, June 25, 1848, and died at Turner Falls, November 25, 1925. He was a business man and was actively engaged in political affairs many years, serving as selectman several terms. He was descended from an English family who settled in Maine, in 1700.

His mother, Loraine (Spearin) Gerald, who was born at Alexander, Maine, August 6, 1847, and died at Turner Falls, May 19, 1924, traced her ancestry to the Chase family who came to America from England, in 1630.

Dr. Gerald was graduated from the Turner Falls High School in 1896, and holds the following degrees: Ph. G., Massachusetts College of Pharmacy, 1902; B. S., Creighton University, 1927; M. D., Tuft Medical School, 1909. He was, for a time, a student at Harvard University where he received special instruction in chemistry. He was president of his graduating class at Tuft Medical School, 1909, and was a member of Phi Delta Chi and Phi Rho Sigma.

He was admitted to practice medicine at Omaha, 1918; Boston, 1909; and Des Moines, Iowa, 1914. A resident of Nebraska since 1912, he has held the following positions: manager of a drug store, 1902-04; instructor at the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy, 1904-09, interne at the Worcester City Hospital, 1910-11; engaged in general practice at Haverhill, Massachusetts, 1911-12; and instructor at Creighton Medical School 1912. Since 1912 he has been associated with Creighton Medical School as professor of pharmocology. He is chairman of the Junior Council there, is a member of the Advisory Board, and is at the head of the departments of Physiology and Pharmocology.

His marriage to Emma Florence Park was solemnized at West Harwich, Barnstable County, Massachusetts, August 15, 1914. Mrs. Gerald was born at Cebu, Philippines, July 15, 1889, and is a descendant of Perigrin White of Mayflower fame. They have two children: Curtis, born May 22, 1915; and Park, born June 30, 1921.

Dr. Gerald is a member of the Omaha-Douglas County Medical Association; the Nebraska State Medical Association; and the American Medical Association. He is a member of the Nebraska State; the American Pharmaceutical Associations and American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Red Cross, the Professional Men's Club, and the Parent-Teachers' Association. He is affiliated with the Miller Park Presbyterian Church at Omaha. His favorite sports are tennis and golf, and his bobby is mechanics. Residence: Omaha.


Edwin H. Gerhart

A leading banker at Newman Grove, Nebraska, is Edwin H. Gerhart, who has been a resident of Madison County for the past 37 years. He was born at Reamstown, Pennsylvania, August 20, 1870, the son of William and Maria (Mishler) Gerhart. His father, who was born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, in 1822, and died there in 1898, was a farmer; he was of German descent. Maria (Mishler) Gerhart was born at Reamstown, August 21, 1833, of German parentage, and died at Reinholds, Pennsylvania, in 1900.

Mr. Gcrhart attended rural schools in Pennsylvania, received the B. E. degree at Millersville State Normal School at Millersvilie, Pennsylvania, in 1892, and was awarded the B. S. degree at Wayne Normal College, Wayne, Nebraska, in 1896. He was prominent in educational work for several years, serving as superintendent of the public schools at Newman Grove, 1894-98, and superintendent of public schools at Hooper, Nebraska, 1898-99. From 1899 to 1912 he was connected with the First National Bank of Newman Grove as cashier and since 1912 has been president of that institution. He is president of the Newman Grove Improvement Society.

He is a member of the Tri County Community Club at Newman Grove, the Red Cross, and The Nebraskana Society. He is affiliated with the Methodist Episcopal Church there and is a member of the following fraternal organizations: Modern Woodmen of America; Independent Order of Odd Fellows; and Masons, Scottish Rite and York Rite of the Shrine.

Mr. Gerhart is a Republican, and has held the following political and civic positions: member of the state legislature, 1919; member of the State Normal Board, 1921-23; secretary of the Newman Grove School Board for 19 years; and candidate for regent of the University of Nebraska. He is interested in golfing and gardening. During the World War he served as a Minute Man, Red Cross lecturer, and Liberty loan promoter.

He was united in marriage with Kathryn Daum at Cordelia, Pennsylvania, August 21, 1894. Mrs. Gerhart, whose ancestry is German, was born at Cordelia, May 26, 1871. Two children were born to them: Kathryn E., February 12, 1896; and Harold Lincoln, December 17, 1897, who married Dorothy E. Hallgren. Kathryn was graduated from the University of Nebraska in 1917 and is now teaching German in the high school at Fremont, Nebraska. Harold was graduated from the University of Nebraska in 1920 and is vice president of the First National Bank of Newman Grove. Residence: Newman Grove.


Reuben Firman Getty

Reuben Firman Getty was born at Jones Station, Butler County, Ohio, December 11, 1857, the son of Robert and Sarah (Emerick) Getty. His father, who was a farmer, was born at Norristown, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, in 1816, and died at Waco, Nebraska, October 14, 1884; his ancestry was Scotch. His mother was born in Pennsylvania in 1830 and died at Logansport, Indiana, January 21, 1872.

Mr. Getty received his education in a rural school near Lafayette, Indiana. He has been a member of the township board of Waco for the past 30 years, and since 1897 has served on the school board there. He is a member of the Odd Fellows, the Modern Woodmen of America, the Rebekahs, and the local Red Cross. He is a teacher in the Sunday School of the Methodist Episcopal Church at Waco; his original church membership was with the Evangelical Association near Lafayette, Indiana.

During the World War Mr. Getty served as a member of the council of defense. His hobbies are reading and radio. He was married to Mae Evelyn Garton at

Benedict, Nebraska, March 12, 1890. Mrs. Getty, who was formerly a teacher, was born near Clyde, Ohio, flay 7, 1870.

To this union the following children were born: Robert, born May 19, 1891, who married Anna Bell; Amy, born Mary 14, 1893, who died August 31, 1894; Grace, born April 26, 1897, who married Frank S. Walter; Hayward, born October 24, 1898; Millard, born August 9, 1900; and Wayne, born August 25, 1902, who died May 23, 1907; Beth, born August 29, 1904; Ervin, born Augast 16, 1907; and Norris, born May 13, 1915. Residence: Waco.


James Robert Gettys

James Robert Gettys was born in Jasper County, Iowa, August 3, 1868, the son of Joseph and Rebecca Frances (Wilson) Gettys. His father, who was born in Richland County, Ohio, September 15, 1834, was a farmer and homesteader in Kansas, in 1870. He was a corporal in company D of the 40th Iowa Volunteer Infantry, and was the great grandson of Samuel Gettys, who came from Donegal, Ireland, and settled in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, in 1740, where he founded the City of Gettysburg. He died at Prairie View, Kansas, June 25, 1895.

Rebecca Frances Wilson was born in Arkansas, May 11, 1838, and was the granddaughter of Jesse Wilson of Delaware. She was the daughter of Robert White and Johanna (Demars) Wilson, the latter of whom was born in Kentucky of French parentage. She died at Newton, Iowa, October 8, 1920.

Dr. Gettys received his early education in the public schools of Kansas and was a student at McPherson Normal College at Republican City, Nebraska, for a time. In 1897, he was graduated from Nebraska Wesleyan University with the Bachelor of Arts degree, and from 1905-07 took post graduate work at the University of Nebraska. He was awarded the degree of Doctor of Divinity by Nebraska Wesleyan University in 1912 and was elected to membership in Phi Kappa Phi and Theta Phi Sigma.

Ordained to the ministry in 1888, he joined the West Nebraska Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church in Minden in September of that year. He was business manager of the Topical Bible Publication in 1897; was pastor at DeWitt 1897-99, at Hebron 1899-1901; served as superintendent of the Beatrice district 1901-07; was pastor at David City 1908-12; was pastor of the First Church at Grand Island 1912, First Church of University Place, Lincoln, 1913; was financial director of the Conference Claimants Society 1916-21; and superintendent of the Beatrice district 1921-27. Since 1928 he has been financial secretary of the Board of Pensions.

Dr. Gettys has been delegate to general conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church six times. He is the author of The Upper Trail (1913); and Who's Who in the Universe (1922). He is a Republican, a 32nd degree, Scottish Rite Mason, and a member of the Nebraskana Society. Since 1888 he has resided in Nebraska.

On October 27, 1890, he was united in marriage to Cora Estella Scofield at Hendley, Nebraska. Mrs. Gettys, who was born in Cherokee County, Iowa, May 17, 1869, is the granddaughter of John Henry and Louisa (Doyle) Scofield of New York City, and a daughter of John Francis and Mary (Gillis) Scofield. There are four children, Lloyd Bryant, born October 19, 1893, who was graduated from Nebraska Wesleyan University with the Bachelor of Arts degree; Flora Frances, born August 27, 1896, who is a world-famous soprano and is especially known for her achievements in Italy, and who took her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University in 1917; Cora Luella, born October 17, 1898, who was awarded the Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees by the University of Nebraska and the degree of Doctor of born at the University of Illinois; and Margaret, born November 19, 1901, who was graduated from the University of Nebraska with the degrees of Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Laws. Charles Kimball Gibbons

Charles Kimball Gibbons, son of Henry and Emma Jane (Drew) Gibbons, was born at Kearney, Nebraska, December 13, 1876, and since 1903 has been engaged in the practice of medicine and surgery in Nebraska. His father, born in Ireland, about 1840, came to America about 1866, and was a prominent Mason in Nebraska. At the time of his death at Kearney, August 22, 1923, he was retired. His mother, who was born in Illinois, in 1852, died at Kearney on October 19, 1911. Her father died from starvation in Andersonville prison in the Civil War.

Dr. Gibbons attended Shattuck Military Academy until 1895, and received his degree of Doctor of Medicine from Northwestern University in 1902. His fraternity is Phi Rho Sigma. Dr. Gibbons served his interneship at Passavant Memorial Hospital at Chicago, and returning to Nebraska in 1903, established his present practice. At the present time he specializes in surgery. During the World War he served one year with the rank of major at Base Hospital No. 111, in France. For ten years he has been a member of the Medical Corps of the Nebraska National Guard.

On June 25, 1902, Dr. Gibbons was married to Nellie June Downing at Kearney. Mrs. Gibbons, who is the daughter of R. L. Downing, was born at Kearney, December 7, 1879. They have one daughter, Nancy Jane, born February 21, 1907, who is married to John Henry.

Dr. Gibbons is a Republican. He is a member of the Elks and all Masonic orders, and is affiliated with St. Luke's Episcopal Church. His professional organizations include the American Medical Association, the Nebraska State Medical Association and the Buffalo County Medical Society. He is a member of the Red Cross, the Commercial Club, the Nebraskana Society, and the Kearney Country Club. He is fond of golf, while his hobby is art. Residence: Kearney.


Charles Henry Gietzen

Charles Henry Gietzen, dentist, was born at Fremont, Nebraska, August 2, 1876, son of Henry and Louisa (Voight) Gietzen.

He attended public schools at Fremont and Humphrey, Nebraska, and was graduated from high school at Humphrey in 1893. In 1900 he received the degree of Bachelor of Dental Surgery from Northwestern University.

His marriage to Florence O. Sammons was solemnized on August 10, 1923.

He is the author of scientific papers on dentistry, various poems, and is now dental clinician and lecturer. His professional organizations include the American Dental Association, the Minnesota Dental Association, the Omaha District Dental Society (president, 1928), the Nebraska State Dental Association, the Tri-City Dental Association (president, 1916). He is a Scottish Rite Mason and a member of the Shrine. Residence: Omaha.


Frank Thurston Gifford

Born at Rome, Wisconsin, May 24, 1879, Frank Thurston Gifford is the son of Francis Marion and Maria (Thurston) Gifford. The father, born in Erie, Pennsylvania, December 15, 1842, was a farmer, who served in the Civil War and who died at Ord, in October, 1926.
