Claude Pierce Hensel

Claude P. Hensel, a resident of Nebraska for the past 45 years, was born at Columbus, Ohio, December 8, 1874, the son of Frederick Christian and Elizabeth (Patrick) Hensel. His father, who was an accountant and traveling salesman, was born at Columbus, December 15, 1847; his ancestry is German. His mother, who was of Scotch Irish descent, was born at Belfontaine, Ohio, June 9, 1848, and died at Palacios, Texas, in 1921. The father died January 28, 1932.

Mr. Hensel attended the grade and high schools of Nebraska. He has been prominent in political and civic affairs throughout the state for many years and has held the following public offices: sheriff of Thayer County, Nebraska; deputy United States marshal, at Lincoln, Nebraska; and sheriff of Lancaster County, Nebraska. 1848, and died at Palacios, Texas, in 1921.

During the Spanish American War Mr. Hensel was in active army service, 1898-9, and in the recent World War took part in loan drives. He is a member of the Veterans of the Spanish War, Veterans of Foreign Wars. and Sons of the Veterans. His memberships in civic organizations include the Chamber of Commerce, Hiram Club, Optimist International Club, the Young Men's Christian Association, the Red Cross and the Nebraskana Society.

Mr. Hensel is a member of the Elks, the Knights of Pythias, and the Masons, (32nd degree, Sesostris Temple, and Lincoln Consistory). He is affiliated with St. Paul Methodist Church of Lincoln. Politically, he is a Republican.

On January 2, 1903, he was united in marriage with Mildred Marbelette Pratt at Hebron, Thayer County, Nebraska. Mrs. Hensel, whose ancestry is Scotch, was born at Geneva, Fillmore County, Nebraska August 21, 1880. Residence: Lincoln.


Joseph Aloysius Henske

Joseph A. Henske, one of Omaha's leading pediatricians was born at St. Louis, Missouri, April 2, 1886. His father, Andrew Adolphus Henske, born in Germany, January 1, 1851, was a physician and a doctor of philosophy. He died at St. Louis, July 12, 1927. Theresa (Klaren) Henske, his mother, was born at St. Louis, September 15, 1858.

Dr. Henske was educated in the private schools of St. Louis, and later was a student at St. Francis Solanis College, St. Louis University, and Barnes University where he was awarded his M. D. degree. He was elected to membership in Phi Chi, medical fraternity.

Junior and senior interne at the City Hospital of St. Louis, 1907-09 he was surgeon for the Missouri Pacific Railroad at Kansas City and St. Louis, 1909 to 1913; division surgeon of the Missouri Pacific Railroad, 1913-17; and was associated with Dr. H. M. McClanahan from 1919 to 1929. He served as associate pediatrician at the Methodist Episcopal Hospital in Omaha, 1919-30, and since 1930 has been visiting pediatrician at this institution. Since 1922 he has been pediatrician at the Clarkson Memorial Hospital. He is now instructor of pediatrics in the medical department of the University of Nebraska.

The author of many contributions to pediatric literature, with Dr. H. M. McClanahan he published: Pediatrics for the General Practitioner. During the World War Dr. Henske was captain in the Medical Corps, 1917-19, and served in the hospital corps in the United States and in France.

His marriage to Kathryn Gwen McClanahan was solemnized at Omaha, November 3, 1915. Mrs. Henske was born in Illinois, the daughter of Dr. H. M. McClanahan, a pioneer pediatrician. They have three children. Kathryn Elizabeth, born November 12, 1916; Joseph Aloysius, born June 26, 1919; and John McClanahan, born June 3, 1923.

Dr. Henske is a member of the American Medical Society; the Central States Pediatric Society; Nebraska State Medical Association; the Douglas Omaha Medical Society and Association of American Teachers of Diseases of Children. He is a fellow of the American College of Physicians, and the American Academy of Pediatrics. holds membership in the American Authors and Writer Society; the Red Cross; and the Nebraskana Society. He is a member of the Omaha Chamber of Commerce; and of the Masons, Rural Lodge Number 316, at Kansas City Scottish Rice and Shrine. His social clubs are the Omaha Club; and the Happy Hollow Country Club. He likes to golf and ride, while his hobby is farming. He is a Democrat, and is affiliated with the Lowe Avenue Presbyterian Church of Omaha. Residence: Omaha.


Aaron Jack Hepner

Aaron Jack Hepner, merchant, was born at Silver Plume, Colorado, May 26, 1892, son of Dave and Sarah (Jacobs) Hepner.

The father, born in Russia Poland, was a business man at Denver, until his death there on September 20, 1930. Sarah Jacobs was born in New York, of German Jewish ancestry.

Mr. Hepner was graduated from high school in June, 1911, and attended Woods Business College in New York City, until June, 1915. He has been in the mercantile business at Sidney, for the past six years.

On July 31, 1922, he was married to Lillian Joseph at Coalgate, Oklahoma. Mrs. Hepner was born at Hartshorn, Oklahoma, February 5, 1897. They have one son, Harold, born May 12, 1923.

During the late war, Mr. Hepner served in the aviation department. He is a member of the American Legion, the Red Cross, the Chamber of Commerce, the Country Club, and the Elks.

His favorite sports are golf and baseball, while his hobby is the radio. Residence: Sidney.


Kenis P. Herald

Born in Prestonsburg, Floyd County, Kentucky, October 20, 1860, Kenis P. Herald is the son of James H. and Eliza (Akers) Herald. His father was born at Prestonsburg, December 25, 1838, and died at Chester, Nebraska, June 19, 1909. Eliza Herald was also born at Prestonsburg, on February 7, 1842. She died at Chester, April 7, 1915. They were farmers.

Kenis Herald attended the elementary schools. He was united in marriage with Frances A. Goble, at Prestonaburg, on January 27, 1881. She was born at Prestonsburg, January 29, 1861. To this union six children were born: Corie Deve, April 11, 1882, who married L. D. Crandall, died April 8, 1920; Charley F., December 1, 1883, died July 14, 1885; Mary E., May 10, 1888, died May 10, 1886, Frank R., November 28, 1889, died November 20, 1909, Eunice, born December 23, 1891, died the same date, and Roy W., born September 23, 1891, who died the same date.

Mr. Herald has lived in the state for fifty-two years. He is a Democrat and at the present time is serving as postmaster having been appointed September 14, 1914 and is a member of the Nebraskana Society.

He is affiliated with the Methodist Episcopal Church at Byron, is a member of the Red Cross and is clerk of the Modern Woodmen of America Lodge at Byron. Mr. and Mrs. Herald celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary January 27, 1931. Residence: Byron. (Photograph in Album).

Henry William Herbek

A life resident of Nuckolls County, Henry William Herbek was born near Deweese, February 24, 1876. His father, Jakob Herbek, was born in Moravia, Austria, in 1825. Coming to Nebraska in 1870, he lived one year in Crete, and homesteaded in Nuckolls County in 1871. His death occurred at Deweese, June 11, 1900. Marie Svoboda, wife of Jakob, was born in Moravia, August 8, 1835, and died at Deweese, April 4, 1908.

Henry William Herbek attended public school to the ninth grade, and has since been a farmer. He was married on May 15, 1900, to Antonie Karmazin at Lawrence, Nebraska. Of this marriage there are seven children living and four deceased: Mary, born August 23, 1902, died January 6, 1903; George, born December 19, 1903, married Mary Drudik; Florence, born May 1, 1906, died October 6, 1906; Helen, born August 23, 1907, died December 20, 1907; Joe, born December 15, 1908; Albert, born March 15, 1911; Godfrey, born March 2, 1913; Stanley, born May 3, 1914, died May 6, 1914; Henry, born July 3, 1915; Bessie, born July 19, 1919; and Frank, born April 22, 1921. All the unmarried children are on the home farm at the present time. Mrs. Herbek was born in Hungary, October 28, 1878, and came to America in 1881.

During the World War Mr. Herbek participated in all loan and relief drives. A member of Assumption Catholic Church, he has served on various committees. During his entire life he has been a leader in his community, and has taken an active part in community affairs. He is a director of the local school board and a member of the Knights of Columbus, and was recently made a member of the Nebraskana Society. He also belongs to the Country Club. Residence: Lawrence.


Walter John Herbes

Born at Osmond, Pierce County, Nebraska, on March 7, 1891, Walter J. Herbes is the son of Henry John and Gertrude (Billerbeck) Herbes. He completed public school at Humphrey, Nebraska, and later attended Creighton University.

On November 21, 1911, Mr. Herbes was married to Margaret Dunker at Dodge, Nebraska. Mrs. Herbes was born at Dodge, on April 17, 1892. They have three children, Howard, born March 8, 1913; Maxine, born July 4, 1914; and Zona, born December 2, 1915.

An independent Republican, and active in politics, Mr. Herbes has served as secretary of the Republican County Central Committee for four years. He is editor and publisher of The Osceola Record, Osceola, Nebraska, at the present time, and has been active in the newspaper field for many years.

Mr. Herbes is a member of the Masons, and the Nebraskana Society. Baseball and football are his favorite sports. Residence: Osceola.


Friedrich August Hermsmeyer

Friedrich August Hermsmeyer was born at Cherokee, Iowa, October 14, 1874, the son of Henry Simon and Louise Caroline (Steinmeyer) Hermsmeyer. His father, who was born in Westphalia, Germany, April 9, 1840, served as a soldier in the War of 1864, in Germany, where he was a farmer; he died at Johnstown, Nebraska, April 27, 1906. His mother was born at Westphalia, July 2, l845, came to America in 1867, and died at Johnstown, February 5, 1909.

Mr. Hermsmeyer received his education in the rural schools of Iowa and Nebraska, later attended the parochial school of the Zion Lutheran Church. Since his early youth he has been engaged in farming and since 1909, has lived on his 160-acre homestead in Brown County. He is affiliated with the Evangelical Zion Lutheran Church of the Missouri Synod. His hobby is mathematics.

His marriage to Dorette Friederike Wilhelmine Schelm occurred at Denison, Iowa, September 14, 1904. Mrs. Hermsmeyer, whose parents came to this country in 1868, was born at Denison, December 11, 1875. They have two children: Wilhelm, born October 16, 1912; and Friedrich, born October 31, 1914. Residence: Johnstown.


John Frederick Herold

On March 4, 1877, at Bern, Kansas, John F. Herold was born. The son of Bernard Michael and Katherine (Brookner) Herold, his father was born in Germany, and in his early boyhood came to America where he engaged in farming and breeding of fine livestock. He died at Lincoln, Nebraska, February 8, 1928. His mother was born in Germany, July 20, 1855 came to America in early childhood.

Mr. Herold's education was received in the public and high schools at Bern, Kansas. For the last thirty years he has lived in Nebraska where he is a farmer and grower of purebred stock.

His marriage to Eva Florence Hilt was solemnized at Bern, April 5, 1899. Mrs. Herald, who was born of German parentage at Bern, November 30, 1878, was a school teacher before her marriage. There are three children: Virginia, born January 15, 1901, who married Orval Dolph, now living at Los Angeles, California; Frances, born November 25, 1903, now at Hollywood, California; and John, born April 12, 1905, who married Rose Kessler, living in Los Angeles, California.

Mr. Herold enlisted as a private in the Spanish-American War, May 16, 1898. In the World War he was commissioned captain by Governor Neville. He served as committeeman of liberty loan drives and was active in all war-time affairs. He is a life member of the Red Cross, and a member of the United Spanish War Veterans; is president of the Tenant Farmers of America; past president of the Lewiston High School board; past president of the National Polled Hereford Breeders' Association, and in 1921 was president of the state association of this organization. He is a member of the Farmer's Union and various livestock and grain growers associations. He is fond of hunting, fishing, hiking, and traveling. His hobbies are reading and mechanics. Politically, Mr. Herold is an independent. Residence: Lewiston.


Henry Herpolsheimer

Henry Herpolsheimer, president of R. Herpelsheimer Company, was born in Tauensenov, Russia, November 28, 1843, the son of Christian O. and Anna Elisabeth (Smith) Herpolsheimer. The family emigrated from Herpolsheimer on Rhine, to Tauvensnov, about a hundred and fifty years prior to the birth of Christian Herpolsheimer, on July 28, 1805. He was a shoe manufacturer, who immigrated to the United States with his family, and settled in Michigan. He died at Grand Rapids on February 18, 1903, His wife, Anna, who was also a native of Tauensenov, and the mother of eight children, died at New Carlisle, Indiana, March 25, 1885. She was descended of the Smith and Hildebrand families of Germany.

Henry Herpolsheimer attended the public schools of New Carlisle, graduating in 1860. He married Caroline Wilhelmine Krause, who was born at Ann Arbor, Michigan, February 7, 1852. To their union ten children were born, five of whom are deceased. They are as follows: Hattie, who married William Lampbrecht; Ida, who married Al Barber; Albert, Alfred, Ervin, all unmarried, and Oscar, Walther, Robert, Theodore and Henry, deceased.

From New Carlisle he moved to Buchanan where he clerked in a store six years. He then was in business with his brother William G. Herpolsheimer for ten years. In

1880 he came to Lincoln where he established the first department store, H. Herpolsheimer Company.

During the Civil War Mr. Herpolsheimer enlisted with the 43rd Indiana Cavalry in 1861 and serving about one year. Residence: Lincoln.


Max Raymond Herrington

Born at Waterloo, Nebraska, June 7, 1895, Max Raymond Herrington is the son of James G. and Belle (Noyes) Herrington. His father, a native of Greenwich, New York, was a farmer many years in Nebraska, and died at Waterloo, January 2, 1916. His wife, Belle, who was also born in Greenwich, died at Waterloo, July 10, 1918.

Mr. Herrington was graduated from Waterloo High School in 1914 and received his Ph. G. from the Creighton College of Pharmacy in 1920. He is a member of Kappa Psi. His marriage to Elsie Meredith was solemnized at Omaha, where she was born, on July 3, 1899.

A registered pharmacist, Mr. Herrington is also serving as pastmaster at Millard. He is a life resident of the state, and is affiliated with the Republican party, and participates in local politics. During the World War he served overseas with the 42nd Ambulance Company, and he is a member of the American Legion. He is a Presbyterian and has been elected to life membership in the Nebraskana Society. Residence: Millard.


Adam John Herrmann

On January 11, 1874, Adam John Herrmann was born at Sandusky, Ohio. He is the son of John Martin and Katherine (Gegler) Herrmann. His father, a shoemaker, was born at Wurtemberg, Germany, November 23, 1845, and came to this country April 6, 1868. His death oc- (sic) erine Herrmann was born at Wurtemberg, July 9, 1845, and died at Osceola, October 6, 1921.

Mr. Herrmann's father homesteaded in Nebraska about fifty-five years ago. Because of poor health, most of the labor of the farm fell upon Mr. Herrmann, who helped his brothers to receive an education. He has resided in Nebraska for fifty-five years and is a successful farmer in Polk County.

His marriage to Hannah C. Timm was solemnized at Osceola, April 5, 1900. She is the daughter of Joacheir and Mary (Jannings) Timm, and was born at Three Rivers, Michigan, September 17, 1876. They have four children: Ruth Mae, born October 30, 1902; who is married to Phil W. Jacoby; Wesley P., born March 14, 1904, who is married to Veryle E. Foster; Arthur R., born May 30, 1907, who is married to Leona Lenhart; and Victor A., born December 2, 1915. Wesley P. is the undertaker at Tecumseh, Nebraska; Phil W. Jacoby is in the furniture and undertaking business at Alton, Illinois; and Arthur R. is the undertaker at McCook, Nebraska.

He is a member of the First Methodist Episcopal Church of Osceola, the Farm Bureau Association, The Nebraskana Society, and has been treasurer of his local school board for thirteen years. His favorite sport is baseball and traveling is his hobby. Residence: Osceola.

Joyce Hertzler

Joyce O. Hertzler, educator at the University of Nebraska, was born at Jordan, Minnesota, January 20, 1895, the son of Charles William and Lillie May (Zorn) Hertzler. His father, who was born at Burlington, Iowa, February 22, 1867, is head of the sociology department at the Baldwin Wallace College at Berea, Ohio; his Swiss ancestors settled in Ohio, and later moved to Iowa. His mother, who was a devoted homemaker, was born at Burlington, Iowa, February 11, 1874; her family was of old southern Indiana stock.

Professor Hertzler attended the public and high school at Berea, and later was graduated from Baldwin Wallace College, 1916. He was awarded a scholarship at Harvard University where he attended in 1916 and 1917 held a fellowship at the University of Wisconsin, where he was assistant instructor, 1918-20. He was awarded second honors at Baldwin Wallace College, was president of the graduating class there, and was active in music basketball and track. He is a member of Alpha Kappa Delta.

He is now professor of sociology and chairman of the department of sociology at the University of Nebraska and was formerly a member of the faculty at the University of Wisconsin. He is the author of the following: History of Utopian Thought, published by Macmillan, 1923; Social Progress, published by the Century Company, 1928; Social Institutions, published by McGraw-Hill, 1929; and various articles published in the American Journal of Sociology, the Scientific Monthly, and Sociology and Social Research. He is a contributor to the Encyclopaedia of the Social Sciences.

Professor Hertzler served as infantry drill sergeant during the World War, and was in the artillery officers school at the time the armistice was signed. He is a member of the American Association of University Professors, the Nebraska Writers' Guild, the Nebraska Conference for Social Work, and the Nebraskana Society.

His professional organizations include: American Sociological Society; American Association for Labor Legislation; and the American Academy of Political and Social Sciences. He is a member of the Lincoln University Club.

His sports are golfing and mountain climbing, while other interests include reading, gardening, and woodworking. Politically, he is an independent Republican.

His marriage to Flora Maria Louise Filtzer was solemnized at Milwaukee, Wisconsin, September 1, 1921. Mrs. Hertzler was born at Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin. They have two children: Betty May, born August 22, 1924; and Robert Lincoln, born June 28, 1927. Residence: Lincoln.


Abe Herzberg

Abe Herzberg, merchant, was born in Franklin, Pennsylvania, October 6, 1875, son of Aaron and Henrietta (Marks) Herzberg. He is married to Celestine Schaufarber, who was born in Columbus, Ohio, November 25, 1888. They have one daughter, Angela.

For the past 25 years Mr. Herzberg has been a resident of Omaha. At the present time he is president of Herzbergs Incorporated, the Herzberg Realty Company, and the Herzberg Brothers Clothing Company. His clubs are the Highland Club and the Athletic Club. Residence: Omaha.


Oliver P. Hess

Oliver P. Hess, prominent merchant at Holdrege, Nebraska, was born at Barnsville, Ohio, July 17, 1877, son of James Milton and Elizabeth A. (Beabout) Hess. His father, who was born in Ohio, September 24, 186, and died at Deshler, Nebraska, December 6, 1889, was a farmer. His mother was born in Ohio, October 10, 1854, and died at Hebron, Nebraska, March 5, 1915.

Mr. Hess received his education in the public grade and high schools of Hebron. He is now manager of the Hested Store Company at Holdrege, and is a member of the Christian Church and the Masonic Lodge No. 43 at Hebron. His political affiliation is with the Republican party.

On October 27, 1904, he was married at Geneva, Nebraska, to Bess Helen Wilcox, who was born at Belleville, Kansas, August 21, 1885. Their three children are: Wilma, born February 2, 1907; Donald, July 9, 1912; and Dean, April 13, 1914. Residence: Holdrege.

Harry Edward Hester

Harry Edward Hester was born at Beaver City, Nebraska, December 27, 1890, the son of Henry and Jeannette Lodema (Shafer) Hester. His father, who is a retired farmer, was born at Huntsville, Indiana, October 3, 1853, of Dutch parentage. His mother was born at Bellville, Ohio, May 25, 1858.

Mr. Hester was graduated from the Beaver City High School in 1910, and later attended the University of Nebraska. He has been a farmer near Beaver City for a number of years and has served as vice president and treasurer of the Beaver City Co-operative Creamery. He is secretary of the Furnas County Farm Bureau, is serving his fifth year as director of the school board of District 74, is affiliated with the Methodist Episcopal Church, and holds membership in the Independent Order of Odd Fellows.

He is vice president of the Furnas County Agricultural Society, and holds membership in the Nebraskana Society. He married Annie May Young at Beaver City, June 16, 1915. Mrs. Hester, whose ancestry is English, was born at Nemaha, Nebraska, October 5, 1892. Their three children are: Hazel Marie, born March 23, 1916; Max Raymond, born July 20, 1917; and Marjorie Jeannette, born February 23, 1921. Residence: Beaver City. (photograph in Album).


Arthur B. Hestwood

Arthur B. Hestwood, wholesale dry goods executive of Omaha, was born at Jefferson, Iowa, July 17, 1864, the son of John and Anna (Griffith) Hestwood. His father, who was a clergyman in the Methodist Episcopal Church, was born in Ohio, and died at Indianola, Iowa, October 1897. He was of English descent. His mother was born in Indiana and died in Indianola, Iowa, April, 1895. Her ancestry was Scotch-Irish.

Mr. Hestwood attended the Atlantic (Iowa) High School. He entered the wholesale dry goods business with the M. E. Smith Company where he remained for 9 years. In 1897 he became associated with the Smith-McCord Dry Goods Company at Kansas City, and was connected with this firm for 20 years. In 1917 he formed a connection with the Tootle-Campbell Dry Goods Company at St. Joseph, Missouri; he is now vice-president of the Omaha branch of this company, and is serving as manager.

He was married to May Lank at Dexter, Iowa, October 19, 1887. Four children were born to this marriage: Hazel, born August 28, 1889, who married Arthur P. Miller; Helen, born May 29, 1893, who married Harlan Thompson. who died July, 1924; Arthur, born April 23, 1903; and Clifford, born March 1, 1907. Mrs. Hestwood was born at Dexter, July 29, 1864, and died at St. Joseph, December 18, 1926.

Mr. Hestwood is a member of the Omaha Chamber of Commerce; The National Wholesale Dry Goods Institute of New York, and the Omaha Field Club. His favorite sport is golfing. He is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church at St. Joseph. He is an independent Republican. Residence: Omaha.


Bruce Hudson Hewett

Bruce Hudson Hewett was born at Avon, Illinois, April 14, 1862, son of Leander Hudson and Hannah Wright (Morey) Hewett. The father was born in Ohio, and died at Gordon, Nebraska, March 1, 1910. He was a stock dealer, shipper, and feeder. His wife, Hannah, Was born in Illinois, February 3, 1839, and died at Gordon, December 14, 1917.

Mr. Hewett was a rancher for a number of years and also a banker. He is a Republican, and has held the offices of county treasurer and county commissioner. He is a member of the Methodist Church, the Red Cross, the Modern Woodmen of America, and the Masons. His hobby is reading.

On November 7, 1911, he was married to Dora Etta Oehlmann, at Chariton, Iowa. Mrs. Hewett, who is of German descent, was born at Derby, Iowa, June 23, 1867. Residence: Rushville.


Leo Charles Hewitt

Leo Charles Hewitt was born at Elgin, Illinois, February 7, 1881, the son of Charles Alfred and Kate Belle (Knotts) Hewitt. His father, who was a jeweler, farmer, and optometrist was graduated from the Chicago Opthalmic College in 1894, was graduated from LaGrange School in 1906, and served as president of the State Board of Optometrists and president of the Nebraska Society of Optometrists. His English ancestors, who played an important part in the early history of America, first settled in Rhode Island in 1624. The family history is an interesting and varied one, and members of the family were inventors, financiers, politicians, and distinguished soldiers.

Kate Belle (Knotts) Hewitt was born at Leesburg, Virginia, October 2, 1855. She was engaged in business until 1920, and is now active in the following organizations at Neligh: Eastern Star; P. E. O., and Logas Club. She is a descendant of the McCabe family of Virginia and is the daughter of a Virginia manufacturer who served as county judge and was killed in the Civil War in 1864.

Mr. Hewitt was graduated from the Neligh High School in 1898, was a student at Gates College in 1899 and the University of Nebraska in 1900. He was agent and assistant superintendent of the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company, 1902-06, was associated with his father in the jewelry and optometry business from 1906 until his death in 1921, and has been engaged in business alone at Neligh since 1921.

He has been unusually prominent in professional organizations in the following positions: president of the Nebraska Optometrical Association, 1925-27; member of the board of Optometry Examiners, since 1928; chairman of the board of Optometry Examiners, two terms; chairman and examiner of the First Aid & Life Saving Department of the American Red Cross; secretary and treasurer of the North Nebraska Optometric Educational Extension Association, 1931. Mr. Hewitt is president of the Neligh Rotary Club, is a member of the Neligh Country Club, and served as vice president of the Chamber of Commerce.

His fraternal organizations include the Masonic bodies and the Order of Eastern Star. He is Past Master of Trowell Lodge Number 71, Past High Priest of Temple Chapter Number 40, Past Thrice Illustrious Master of Temple Council Number 20. A Republican, Mr. Hewitt has been mayor of Neligh since 1926. His sports include walking, swimming, and tennis.

He was married at Neilgh, March 23, 1912, to Fannie Elizabeth Freeman, who was born at Neligh, November 11, 1887. Residence: Neligh.


Louis William Heyde

Louis William Heyde, prominent lawyer at Grand Island, Nebraska, was born there August 27, 1901, the son of Albert and Emily (Lucas) Heyde. His father was born at Bad Pyrmont, Germany, and his mother was also a native of Germany.

Mr. Heyde attended the Grand Island High School where he was graduated in 1920, received the A. B. degree at Grand Island College in 1924, and in 1927 received the LL. B. degree at the University of Nebraska where he is a member of Kappa Sigma. He played football at Grand Island College for four years, serving as captain of the college team in 1923. Since 1927 he has been independently engaged in the practice of law at Grand Island.

August F. Heye

August F. Heye, was born near Glenvil, Clay County, Nebraska, January 11, 1882, and has always lived in that vicinity. His father, J. D. Heye, a farmer, was born in Germany, and died near Glenvil, November 11, 1891. Anna M. (Boltjes) Heye, his mother, was born in Germany, and died at Hastings, Nebraska, February 11, 1923.

Until 1905, Mr. Heye was a farmer, for four years, was a clerk, and for the last 22 years has been engaged in the hardware business at Glenvil. He is treasurer of the Commercial Club, is a member of the Nebraskana Society, and holds membership in Emanuel Luther Church of Glenvil. He served as treasurer of the school board from 1914 to 1923, and during the World War was agent for United States Thrift Stamps. He is a Democrat.

His marriage to Tena A. Kahman, occurred at Glenvil, April 12, 1905. Mrs. Heye was born near Golden, Illinois, December 17, 1883. Two children were born to them: Anna, born January 26. 1906, who married Walter Nowka; and Arnold, born July 22, 1912. Anna is assistand (sic) postmistress at Glenvil, and Arnold is clerk in his father's hardware store. Residence: Glenvil.


Albert George Heyhoe

Albert G. Heyhoe, distinguished educator of Nebraska, was born at Swaffham, Norfolk, England, the son of George and Lucy (Whiskerd) Heyhoe. His father, who was a cattle dealer, was born in Norfolk and died at Swaffham. His mother was born at Castleacre, Norfolk, England, and died at Swaffham.

Dean Heyhoe attended a private school in England, and for a time was a student at the Swaffham Public School. He holds the following degrees: A. B., Dartmouth College, 1906; A. M., Dartmouth College, 1908; B. D., Bangor Theological Seminary, 1915. He was a graduate student at Yale University, 1916-17, 1917-18; University of Colorado, during the summer session; Chicago Theological Seminary 1927, and the University of Chicago, 19278. He has been awarded the following scholarship honors; Phi Beta Kappa; magna cum laude; and special honors in philosophy at Dartmouth College.

He has held the following educational positions: assistant instructor in philosophy, Dartmouth College, 1906-07, 1907-08; instructor in Biblical literature and Christian evidences, Duane College, 1908-09; and professor of Biblical literature and Christian evidences, 1909-. Since 1919 be has been dean of men at Duane College, where he is also professor of philosophy and psychology. He is the author of Relation of Mind and Body, published in 1906, besides various magazine articles.

Dean Heyhoe was united in marriage with Anna Almena Wilgus, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. They have three children: Gordon, who attends law school of the University of Michigan; Kenneth Wilgus, who was graduated from Duane College; and Winston Brainerd, a student in engineering, University of Minnesota.

During the World War Dean Heyhoe was active in Liberty loan drives. He is a member of the Blue Valley Association of Congregational Ministers; was formerly a member of the Nebraska Schoolmaster's Club and the Nebraska Academy of Sciences; and is a member of the Nebraskana Society. He was a member of the Crete Rotary Club; is counsellor of the college Young Men's Christian Association; and was formerly a member of the board of trustees of the Crete Public Library. He was at one time a member of the American Philosophical Association.

He is affiliated with the First Congregational Church at Crete, and was moderator of the Nebraska Congrega- (sic) Crete, and is moderator of the Nebraska Congregational Conference; he is chairman of the course of study committee of the Nebraska Congregational Conference is a member of the Modern Woodmen of America, and Royal Arch Mason. Residence: Crete.


John Herman Heyne

John Herman Heyne was born in Thurston County, Nebraska, February 11, 1886, the son of Henry and Christina (Meyer) Heyne. His father, who was born at Oldenburg, Germany, May 25, 1853, and died at Pender, Thurston County, Nebraska, came to America in 1884. His mother was born in Germany, April 10, 1868, and died at Pender, July 6, 1901.

Mr. Heyne, who has been a merchant, farmer, and livestock dealer in Thursday County for many years, is now president of the Heyne Service Station, and is vice president of the Heyne Lumber Company at Pender. He is a member of the Chamber of Commerce, is affiliated with the Lutheran Church, and holds membership in the Nebraskana Society. He is a Republican.

On April 12, 1907, he was married to Martha Nutzhorn at Carun, Sask., Canada. Mrs. Heyne was born in Thurston County, November 20, 1885, and died at Pender, January 22, 1919. They have three children: Ember, born November 20, 1909, who married Arthur Budwig; Lloyd born February 12, 1908; and Myra, born February 23 1917. Mr. Heyne has remarried. Residence: Pender.


Daze Tracy Heynen

Daze Tracy Heynen, county clerk of Kimball County, was born at Tracy Ranch in Kimball County, November 11, 1883, daughter of Asa and Mary Ann (Shields) Tracy. Her father, a native of New York, died at Cheyenne, Wyoming, on January 26, 1888. He was a stockman, whose ancestors came over in the Mayflower. Her father was of Irish descent. Her mother was born in Illinois, August 2, 1853, and died at Pine Bluffs, Wyoming, February 19, 1906. She was of English descent, being related to Sir Walter Peacock of London, England.

Daze Tracy attended the public school, and was graduated from the school of music of the University of Nebraska. She was also graduated from Lincoln Business College, and thereafter was stenographer for Curtis, Tuwle and Paine Company of Lincoln (1902-1910).

On May 7, 1910, she was married to Frank Augustus Heynen at Lincoln. Mr. Heynen was born in Iowa, March 10, 1881, and died at Indianapolis, Indiana, September 11, 1913. His parents were born in Germany. He was a salesman for the Malleable Steel Range Company of South Bend, Indiana. There is one daughter, Dorothy, born January 1, 1912, who is in her senior year at the University of Chicago.

After her husband's death in 1913, Mrs. Heynen entered the office of the county clerk of Kimball County. She was deputy clerk from January 1, 1915, until July, 1917, and since that time has been county clerk. She was vice president of the Nebraska Association of County Clerks and Registers of Deeds for the year 1930, and is affiliated with the Congregational Church of Miles, Iowa. In her younger days, Mrs. Heynen enjoyed horseback riding, and now her favorite sport is golf. Residence: Kimball.


Clarence Wright Hiatt

Born at Odell, Nebraska, July 1, 1891, Clarence Wright Hiatt is the son of Colonel Johnson and Adelaide (Upson) Hiatt. Colonel Johnson Hiatt was born in Sidney, Iowa, June 6, 1859, and died at Beatrice, May 1, 1930. His father helped to settle southwestern Iowa. Gage County, Colonel Johnson was a farmer and live stock buyer in Odell for more than twenty-five years.

Adelaide Upson was born in Seward Township, Illinois, March 11, 1859. Her father helped to establish the Upson Church which was the first in Gage County, which is still standing. His great grandfather, Joel Estes, discovered Estes Park, which bears his name; was one of the first white men in Colorado and was named Big White Chief by the Indians.

Clarence Wright Hiatt attended public school and was graduated from Odell High School. For one year thereafter he was a student at Cotner Business College at Bethany, and soon took up farming. He is now engaged, in addition to his agricultural work, in stock buying and hog raising, and in the purchase and sale of farms and farm lands.

During 1921-22, Mr. Hiatt served as deputy sheriff of Gage County, and for the past six years has served as a member and treasurer of school district No. 75. During the World War he held the rank of sergeant in the 3rd Military Training Camp at Camp Dodge, Iowa, and was to enter Officers Training School in California when the Armistice was signed.

Mr. Hiatt is a member of Homer A. Armstrong Post of the American Legion at Odell, is a Mason and a member of the Nebraskana Society. He likes sports of all kinds, especially outdoor activities. He is a Republican. His hobbies are farming and improving farms. Mr. Hiatt and his family attend the Methodist Church.

He was married first to Donna L. Baumgardener, daughter of William H. and Laura Baumgardener, early settlers in Wymore, the former for many years a house carpenter for the Burlington Railroad. Donna L. Baumgardner was born at Wymore, June 9, 1890, and died at Odell, February 24, 1917. There is one child of this marriage, Donna Doris, born February 22, 1917. She was an honor student all the way through junior high school at Beatrice and enters senior high school this fall.

On May 10, 1921, he was married to Mae Deck, at Oskaloosa, Iowa. Mrs. Hiatt was born at Oskaloosa, March 10, 1893, and is the mother of one son, Robert Deck, born July 26, 1926. During the World War she operated a Young Men's Christian Association food canteen for three months in London, later managing a food canteen at Nice, France. She received her high school education at Oskaloosa and later was a student at Penn College. For eight years she was a teacher in Iowa high schools and the high school at Beatrice, Nebraska.

Mrs. Hiatt is a member of the Eastern Star, the Woman's Overseas Service League, and the American Legion. She has held various offices in the Eastern Star, was president of the American Legion Auxiliary m 1930, and is now a member of the executive board of that organization. She holds membership in the Helen Sargent unit of the Woman's Overseas League. Residence: Diller. (Photograph in Album).


Charles W. Hickey

A physician and surgeon since 1903, Charles W. Hickey was born in Elkhorn, Nebraska, October 27, 1882. He is the son of Thomas J. and Louise E. (Knight) Hickey, the former born at Toledo, Ohio, April 11, 1854. Thomas J. Hickey, who engaged in farming all his life, died at Elkhorn, March 23, 1925. His wife, Louise, was born in Forest City, Nebraska, December 19, 1860. She is moderator of School District No. 12, and oracle of the Royal Neighbors of America, Camp No. 3498, which position she has held for fifteen years. She is also a member of the Order of Eastern Star.

Dr. Hickey was graduated from the Elkhorn High School in 1898, and received his M. D. from Creighton Medical College in 1903. He has been in the practice of medicine since May 3, 1903, and from 1905 to 1929, was a member of the drug firm of C. W. Hickey and Company at Bennington.

On January 9, 1906, he was married to Eda B. Witte, at Elkhorn. Mrs. Hickey, who is the owner of the Guernsey Dale Farm Dairy, and a breeder of registered Guernsey cattle, was born in Henry, South Dakota, January 11, 1884. They have two children, Elyzabeth Bernice, born October 10, 1907, and Roma Alice, born March 29, 1909. Both attended Omaha University and are talented musicians.

Dr. Hickey is a Republican. His fraternal organizations include Elks Lodge No. 39 at Omaha, the Woodmen of the World, Modern Woodmen of America, Royal Neighbors of America and the Masons. He is a member of the Nebraska State and Omaha-Douglas County Medical Societies, the Presbyterian Church and the Commercial Club at Bennington. During the World War he was a member of the Medical Advisory Board of Douglas County, rendering faithful and efficient service, and by reason of the discontinuance of all such boards pursuant to the act of Congress of May 18, 1917, he was honorably relieved from the duties of that office on March 31, 1919. He is a member of the Medical Veterans of the World War.

John Donald Hicks

John Donald Flicks was born at Pickering, Nodaway County, Missouri, January 25, 1890, the son of John Kossuth and Harriett Gertrude (Wing) Hicks. His father, who was born near Quincy, Illinois, October 30, 1852, died at Mound City, Holt County, Missouri, March 19, 1919; he was a clergyman in the Methodist Episcopal Church, and was a member of the Missouri Conference and the Wyoming State Conference. He was descended from an old family in Virginia and North Carolina, originally of English and Scotch-Irish extraction.

His mother, who was born at Albany, Gentry County, Missouri, March 6, 1858, was a teacher in the Missouri schools before her marriage. She is descended from English colonial stock, the Wing and Otis families of New York.

Professor Hicks received his A. B. degree, 1913, and A. M. degree, 1914, at Northwestern University, and in 1916 was awarded the Ph. D. degree at the University of Wisconsin, where he was a member of Delta Upsilon, and Phi Eta. His early education was received in the public schools of Missouri, and in 1906 he was graduated from the high school at Hopkins.

He has held these positions: educator at Hamline, Wisconsin; at the North Carolina College for Women, 1922-3; at the University of Nebraska, 1923 to this date. He was a teacher in summer schools at Northwestern, University of Nebraska, University of Winconsin (sic), Syracuse University, University of Minnesota, and George Washington University. He is now professor of American history and is dean of the college of arts and sciences at the University of Nebraska.

He is a member of the American Historical Association, the Mississippi Valley Historical Association, the Nebraskana Society, and various other state historical societies. He is also a member of the University Club of Lincoln and the Woodmen of the World. Politically, he is an independent Republican.

On June 15, 1921, he was married to Lucile Harriet Curtis at St. James, Watonwon County, Minnesota. Mrs. Hicks, whose ancestry is English colonial and Scotch, was born at Kewanee, Illinois, June 7, 1899. They have three children: Jane Harriet, born March 11, 1922; Carolyn, born November 22, 1926; and Marjorie Curtis, born January 29, 1931. Residence: Lincoln.
