Anthony R. Kovanda

On May 6, 1863, Anthony R. Kovanda was born at Trimani, Czechoslovakia, the son of Albert and Frances (Hurt) Kovanda. His father, who was born at Trimani, April 9, 1815, and died at Table Rock, Pawnee County, Nebraska, July 15, 1892, was a farmer who came to America in 1867. His mother was born at Kric, Czechoslovakia, May 7, 1822, and died at Humboldt, Richardson County, Nebraska, December 10, 1914.

Mr. Kovanda received his education in the country schools, and later was especially interested in the study of music. He has lived in Nebraska for 63 years. A farmer for nineteen years and a bookkeeper for some time, he was for nine years postmaster. At the present time he is vice president of the State Bank of Elk Creek, at Elk Creek, Nebraska.

He married Anna Clema at Pawnee City, Nebraska, August 18, 1891. Mrs. Kovanda was born in Pawnee City, February 28, 1873; her ancestors were farmers and teachers. There is one son, Rudolph, born March 22, 1893, who is a graduate of the University of Nebraska, and is president of the State Bank of Elk Creek.

In the late war Mr. Kovanda was active in loan drives. He is a member of the Red Cross, the Security Benefit Association, the Western Bohemian Fraternal Lodge, and the Nebraskana Society. He is a Mason, and a Democrat. Residence: Table Rock.


Vratislav Joseph Kovarik

Vratislav Joseph Kovarik, druggist and postmaster, was born. at Crete, Nebraska, June 30, 1876. He is the son of Mike and Mary (Kazda) Kovarik, Sr., who were born in Bohemia, the former in 1845, and the latter in 1855. His father died at Crete, in 1915, and his mother in 1916.

Born on a farm in Saline County, he lived there until he was nineteen years old, walked 2 1/2 miles to country school until he graduated from eighth grade. He then attended Crete High School and had to walk 3 miles. In 1899 he won the first state prize in Crete Schools. The following 2 years he remained on the farm and then took up the drug business for 4 years. Later he attended St. Louis College of Pharmacy 6 months. Returning to Crete he passed the pharmacy examination and became a registered pharmacist. Mr. Kovarik worked 4 years at the Ed. J. Steidl drug store and then moved to Hallam, In 1897 he won first prize at Crete in the Sokol held for Bohemians from all over the state, including horizontal bars, parallel bars, etc.

On October 25, 1899, he was married to Barbara Anna Kubat at Crete. Mrs. Kovarik was born at Crete, April 23, 1880, and is now assistant postmaster at Hallam. They have one son, Robert Carl, born April 8, 1918, who attends high school.

A Republican, Mr. Kovarik participates in local politics. He clerked in a drug store at Crete eight years, from 1893-1901, and for more than thirty years has operated his own drug store at Hallam, and for twenty-nine years has been, and still is postmaster at Hallam. He is a member of the Modern Woodmen of America, the Masons and the Shrine, and is a member of the Sesostris Shrine Band of Lincoln. Playing in bands is his hobby.

He has been treasurer of the Modern Woodmen of America since 1915, and is still holding office. He was instructor in athletic work at Crete for eight years, 1888-1897; and had a band at Hallam for 10 years, 1910-1919. 1897: and had a band at Hallam for 10 years. 1910-1919. Residence: Hallam. Gustav A. Koza

Gustav A. Koza, who for the past seventeen years has served as postmaster at Clarkson, was born in Clarkson, May 8, 1880. He is the son of John and Antonie (Traynicek) Koza, the former a contractor and builder, who was born at Spelkov, Moravia, May 25, 1847. He died at Clarkson, March 18, 1930. Antonie, his wife, was born at Telecy, Europe, June 16, 1849, and died at Clarkson. March 13, 1929.

Educated first in the public schools of Colfax County, Gustav A. Koza later attended Western Normal College at Shenandoah, Iowa. On July 10, 1910, he was united in marriage to Anna Hubacek at Clarkson. Mrs. Koza, who was born in Policka, Bohemia, July 17, 1891, is active in club work and secretary of several civic organizations. There are three children: Gilbert L., born July 1, 1911, who is a junior at the University of Nebraska; Chester A., born September 6, 1913, who graduated in 1931 from the Clarkson public school, and Robert J., born February 15, 1924.

During the World War Mr. Koza was active in civilian drives and is a member of the Home Guard. His religious affiliation is with the New Zion Bohemian Presbyterian Church. He is a member of the Red Cross, the Commercial club and the Modern Woodmen of America. His favorite recreations are traveling and motoring, and his hobby is reading. Residence: Clarkson.


John A. Krance

John A. Krance, clergyman and educator, was born at Berea, Ohio, February 1, 1880. He is the son of Lawrence Krance who was born in Poland, on July 25, 1839. Lawrence Krance came to America in 1870, settling first in Ohio and later in Nebraska. He died on a farm at Farwell, Howard County, Nebraska, October 10, 1908. His wife, Susanna Margaret (Siedoff) Krance, was born in Poland, August 8, 1844, and died in Howard County, January 27, 1913,

Upon the completion of his elementary education in district and parochial schools John A. Krance entered St. Mary's High School, St. Mary's Kansas, from which he was graduated in 1898. He received his A. B. from St. Louis University in 1908, and his A. M. in 1916. His post graduate work was taken at Marquette University 1910-11, Armour Institute 1912, and the University of Wisconsin, 1924.

Professor Krance has been a resident of Nebraska intermittently since 1887. At the present time he is professor of organic chemistry and director of the department of chemistry at Creighton University. He is a memher of the American Chemical Society, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the Nebraska Academy of Science. He is a Roman Catholic. Residence: Omaha.


Golden Paul Kratz

Golden Paul Kratz, county judge of Cheyenne County, was born at Randolph, Nebraska, September 14, 1892, son of George and Olive Annetta (Coats) Kratz. The father, born in Iowa, is a carpenter of German descent. The mother was born in Illinois of English ancestry.

Upon his graduation from Lyons High School in 1910, Mr. Kratz attended the University of Nebraska, receiving his Bachelor of Laws degree in 1916. He was president of his senior class in law school, was a member of the cross country team in 1915, and is a member of Phi Alpha Delta.

From 1920 until 1922 Judge Kratz was a partner in the firm of Kratz Land & Title Company, and from 1922 until 1928, was a member of the law firm of Kepler & Kratz. Since 1929 he has practiced alone in con-

junction with his office of county judge. He was deputy county attorney from 1922 until 1926.

His marriage to Clara Henrietta Paper was solemnized at Lincoln, November 1, 1919. Mrs. Kratz was born in Dodge County, Nebraska, January 11, 1893, of German ancestry. She is the daughter of Nicklaus and Augusta (Clausen) Paper. Mrs. Kratz is a member of Delta Delta Delta at the University of Nebraska, and was a student at Midland College. She is a member of the Eastern Star and the Parent-Teachers Association. They have two children, Kent, born April 28, 1923; and Dean, born June 26, 1924.

Mr. Kratz is a Republican. He enlisted in the Louiisiana (sic) National Guards in the spring of 1917 as a private, and was discharged in 1920 with the rank of second lieutenant. He is a member of the American Legion and was post commander, 1927-28; department executive committeeman, 1927-28. He is a member of the Reserve Officers Association of which he was president in 1927.

Among his professional, civic, and fraternal organizations are the following, Cheyenne County Bar Association, Western Nebraska Bar Association (vice president, 1929) ; Nebraska State Bar Association (advisory council, 1930) ; and the American Bar Association; the Chamber of Commerce; the Lions Club; the Blue Lodge Masons, Consistory and Shrine; Knights of Pythias (chancellor commander, 1927, grand chancellor, 1931). He is a member of the Parent Teachers Association and the Sidney Country Club. Residence: Sidney.


Alexander Rose Krause

Alexander R. Krause was born at West Point, Cuming County, Nebraska, February 7, 1898, the son of Alonzo L. and Jessie (Rose) Krause. His father, who was born at London, Ontario, August 24, 1870, is now a resident of Batesland, South Dakota, where he moved in 1926, and he is engaged in the real estate business. He has been a member of the city council, postmaster, and a civic leader in West Point for many years. His mother was of English descent, and his father's family was German.

Jessie (Rose) Krause was born at Greenbush, New York, April 27, 1872. She is of Scotch and English descent; her great grandfather, Colonel Zebulon Scriven, served in the American Revolution. She was organist for 40 years in her home church, and was active in club work in the community.

Mr. Krause was graduated from the West Point High School in 1915, and in 1920 was awarded the A. B. degree at the University of Nebraska, where he was prominent in school affairs. He was a member of the Glee Club; the Cornhusker Quartette; the Kosmet Club; and the Innocents, 1918. He took part in the spring vacation university road show; was president of Delta Upsilon, 1918, and held membership in Sigma Gamma Epsilon.

From 1920 to 1925, Mr. Krause was treasurer of A. L. Krause & Company; was president of this organization, 1925-27; and since 1927 has been in business for himself. A Republican, he was at one time a member of the city council at West Point, where he has lived all his life.

On October, 18, 1921, he was united in marriage with Lora Jean Thacker at Crowell, Texas. Mrs. Krause, who was born at Crowell, July 8, 1899, is of Norwegian and English descent. They have one daughter, Mary Elizabeth, born March 27, 1931.

Mr. Krause was a cadet officer, 1917-18; was commissioned second lieutenant in the United States Army Infantry, 1918; and was stationed at Camp Mebry, Texas, until the Armistice was signed during the World War. He is a member of the American Legion. He is at the present time treasurer of the West Point Community Club; was secretary of the Lions Club, 1929-30, deputy district governor, 1929-30, district secretary, 1930-31; and is a member of the Nebraskana Society. He is a Mason, Scottish Rite and Shrine. He is affiliated with Grace Lutheran Church of West Point, and is a member of the West Point Country Club. He is fond of golfing. Residence: West Point. Clyde Lauren Krause

Clyde Lauren Krause was born at Albion, Nebraska, July 2, 1893, and has been a resident of this state all his life. His father, Paul Athenial Krause, who was born in Wisconsin, February 26, 1860, has been a tinner, and implement and hardware dealer at Albion, for the past 52 years; his German parents immigrated to this country in 1852, where they settled in Wisconsin, later homesteading in Nebraska. His mother, Carrie Faulkner, who was born in Wisconsin, October 14, 1866, and died at Wahoo, Nebraska, February 14, 1927, was actively interested in nature study and club work. Her parents, who were of Scotch-Irish descent, were settlers in Wisconsin in the early days, and later moved to Nebraska where they were pioneer homesteaders.

Mr. Krause was graduated from the Albion High School in 1911, and was a student at the University of Nebraska, 1911-15, where he was a member of Kappa Sigma. He received letters in basketball and baseball, in high school and was actively identified with athletics during his university career. He also engaged in semi-professional baseball for a time. From 1919 to 1930, he was a partner in the hardware firm P. A. Krause & Sons, at Fullerton, Nebraska. At this time he is secretary-treasurer and a partner in the firm of P. A. Krause & Sons at Albion, acting as director in this organization.

He is a member of the Red Cross, was a member of the Lions Club at Fullerton, from 1927 to 1929, and holds membership in the Masons. He is affiliated with the Congregational Church of Albion, is a member of the Newman Grove Golf Club, and holds membership in the Nebraskana Society. His sports include hunting; fishing; golfing; volleyball; and basketball. His hobby is reading. During the late war Mr. Krause was a sergeant in the medical department of the United States Army, and at this time is a past commander of the American Legion.

He was united in marriage with Eleanor Marie Keenan, at Junction City, Kansas, May 10, 1919. Mrs. Krause, who is a registered nurse, was born at Peoria, Illinois, August 22, 1895, of Irish parentage. During the World War she was an active member of the United States Army Nurses' Corps, and as a member of the American Legion and its auxiliary, she is very active. Two children were born to this marriage: Margaret Louise, born January 19, 1920; and Janet Marion, born September 7, 1923.

Mr. Krause is a Republican, and served as a member of the Fullerton city council from 1924 to 1930. Residence: Newman Grove.


Chester A. Krebs

Chester A. Krehs was born at Scotia, Nebraska, July 13, 1896, the son of Morgan L. and Annie Viola (Reavis) Krebs. His father, who was a public spirited and progressive farmer and stockman, was born at North Manchester, Indiana, March 20, 1863, and died at Scotia, March 16, 1921. His mother was born at Warrensburg, Missouri, December 17, 1865. She was named for her maternal grandmother who settled in Missouri a hundred and ten years ago, and is a descendant of the Warren family of Virginia.

Mr. Krebs was graduated from the high school at Grand Island, Nebraska, in 1916, where he was president of the senior class and received letters in athletics. At this time he is manager of the Scotia Grain and Supply Company, is a member of the Scotia Business Men's Club, and holds membership in the Scotia Parent Teachers Association. He is a Mason.
