Eva Jewett Marti

Eva Jewett Marti, personnel director of the Lincoln school of Commerce, was born at Wilbraham, Massachusetts, January 14, 1880, daughter of Henry Porter and Angeline Lucy (Jewett) Simonds.

Upon the completion of her public school education, Eva Jewett attended the State Teachers College of Mankato, Minnesota, and took special work at Cornell College. She also attended the conservatory there. On April 16, 1900, she was married to Col. Henry Grant Rising, who is deceased. On September 1, 1915 she was married to the late Alfred F. Marti.

She is a Republican, a member of the Chamber of Commerce, the Jewett Family Association, the Delphian Society (various offices), and is eligible to the Daughters of the American Revolution. Residence: Lincoln.


Frank Thomas Becket Martin

Frank T. B. Martin was born at Galesburg, Illinois, December 21, 1876. He is the son of Thomas Becket and Eliza Jane (Smith) Martin, the former an outstanding figure of Galesburg for many years. Thomas Becket Martin was born in Freeport, Pennesylvania (sic), on December 29, 1832, and as a young man went to Galesburg, where he engaged in the insurance business. He was married at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to Eliza Jane Smith, born at Tullow, County Carlow, Ireland. She died at South San Francisco, in November, 1901. Thomas Becket Martin was a Republican. He served as senior warden of Grace Episcopal Church of Galesburg for more than fifty years. His death occurred there on November 19, 1924.

Frank T. B. Martin attended the public schools of Galesburg, and at the end of his junior year at Knox College, left school and came to Omaha. He was a member of the varsity football team at Knox College and earned his letter as left half. He is a member of Phi Delta Theta.

In 1899 Mr. Martin entered the office of Martin, Perfect and Newman as a clerk, continuing there until February, 1902, when he and his brother purchased the firm, which has been operated as Martin Brothers and Company since that date. Mr. Martin is president of the Forest Lawn Cemetery Association and director of the Conservative Savings and Loan Association.

On April 15, 1903 he was married to Mary Ethel Barker, at Omaha. Mrs. Martin was born at Omaha, April 10, 1878, and is the daughter of George E. Barker, pioneer settler in Omaha in 1856. Their four children are Francis T. B., Jr., born November 29, 1904, who is in business with his father; George Barker, born November 6, 1905, who is also connected with Martin Brothers and Company; Charles Wellington, born March 27, 1909, who is associated with Crum and Forster of Chicago; and Alfred Joseph, born September 6, 1914.

One of Nebraska's leading insurance men, Mr. Martin is past president of the Insurance Federation of America, past president of the Nebraska Association of Insurance Agents and president of the Nebraska Insurance Federation. A member of the Chamber of Commerce, he is a member of the board of directors and is now a director and member of the executive committee, and a former chairman of the insurance division.

He is past president of the Continental Club, a trustee of Clarkson Memorial Hospital and a member of the board of regents of the Municipal University of Omaha. He is a vestryman of Trinity Cathedral of Omaha, and is a member of the Young Men's Christian Association. His clubs are the Omaha, of which he is a director, and the Omaha Athletic. In politics he is a Republican. His hobby is reading. Residence: Omaha.


George Ellsworth Martin

George Ellsworth Martin, an outstanding Nebraska educator and school executive, has been a lifelong resident of this state and since 1892 has taken a prominent part in professional affairs. He was born at Falls City, Nebraska, March 19, 1872, the son of Elza and Eliza Anne (Holland) Martin. His father, who was born in Meigs County, Ohio, October 29, 1831, and died at Nebraska City, Nebraska, June 10, 1916, was a farmer; he was descended from an old Virginia family which had settled in the south upon arrival in the country from England. His mother, whose ancestry was Scotch, was born in Delaware, August 26, 1835, and died at Falls City, March 3, 1904.

Mr. Martin attended school at Falls City, was graduated from the high school at Fort Scott, Kansas, in 1892, received the A. B. degree at the University of Nebraska in 1914, and was awarded the A. M. degree at Columbia University in 1919. He was awarded a prize in oratory in 1892, and was a member of Pi Delta Kappa and Kappa Delta Pi.

He has held the following positions in Nebraska: rural school teacher; principal of Dawson Public Schools; principal of the Nebraska City High School; superintendent of city schools of Nebraska City; professor of English, State Normal College, Kearney; and president of the Nebraska State Teachers College, Kearney, at this time, He is the joint author of Searson-Martin Studies in Reading.

Mr. Martin is a member of the Nebraska State Teachers Association, the National Education Association, the Kearney Chamber of Commerce, Illiteracy Board of the National Education Association, and the Kearney Country Club. He served as chairman of the Red Cross, 1927-29, was president of the Rotary Club in 1927 and is now a member of the board of directors of that organization. His hobby is reading, and his favorite outdoor sport is hunting.

On June 12, 1895, he was married to Alice Kriger at Clinton, Kentucky. Mrs. Martin, whose ancestry is French and German; was born at Paducah, Kentucky, April 13, 1868. They have four children. Alike, born May 4, 1896; Ruth, born February 22, 1898, who died June 13, 1920; Frances, born October 19, 1900, who married William W. Little; and Kathryn, born February 4, 1903, who married Harold Rondthaler. Residence: Kearney.


Jerry Lewis Martin

A resident of Nebraska since March 6, 1887, Jerry Lewis Martin is prominent in the lumber business at Edison today. He was born at Quitman, Missouri, February 15, 1871, the son of Wesley Bottom and Lilly Ann (Busby) Martin. His father, who was a farmer and a veteran of the Civil War, was born at Danville, Kentucky, and died at Edison, September 15, 1907. His mother was born at Canton, Ohio, and died at Edison, April 8 1917; her ancestry was Irish.

Mr. Martin was a carpenter and contractor for many years at Edison and is now manager of the Bycrs Lumber Company of Minden, Nebraska, and a lumber yard at Edison. A Democrat, he served as chairman of the town board for four years. He is a member of the Christian Church, the Edison Chamber of Commerce, and the Nebraskana Society, while his fraternal organizations include: Masons; and Odd Fellows.

His marriage to Amber Ewing was solemnized at Denver, Colorado, November 23, 1923. Mrs. Martin, whose ancestry is Scotch, was born at Waco, Texas,

John Martin

John Martin, a resident of Nebraska for the past fifty years, has been a stockman in this state for many years. He was born at West Jefferson, Ohio, January 13, 1863, the son of Frederick and Elizabeth (Linder) Martin. His father was born in Germany December 5, 1826, came to Saunder (sic) County September 25, 1882, and died at Waverly, Nebraska, February 21, 1903. His mother was born at Baden, Germany, August 18, 1834, and died at Lincoln, May, 1907.

Mr. Martin received his education in Ohio. He is now president of the Farmers and Merchants Bank at Ceresco, and is a successful stockman there. He is a member of The Nebraskana Society, is affiliated with the Methodist Church and holds membership in the Eastern Star, and the Masons. He has served on the town board 18 years and has twice been chairman of the board. During the World War he served as a member of the fuel committee of Saunders County, Nebraska. He is a Democrat.

On April 13, 1887, he was united in marriage with Nellie Blanche Robinson at Wahoo, Saunders County, Nebraska; Mrs. Martin was born at Erie, Pennsylvania, April 20, 1869. They have two children: Thurman, born August 26, a farmer, who married Ethel Lowell; and Thelma, born February 12, 1901, who married Joe R. Brown. Residence: Ceresco.


John Cooke Martin

Born at Belfast, County Down, Ireland, June 22, 1859, John Cooke Martin has been a resident of Nebraska forty-eight years. He is the son of William and Elizabeth (Cooke) Martin, the former of whom was born at Belfast in 1836, and died November 27, 1884. He was a ships carpenter and blacksmith. His wife, Elizabeth. was born in Belfast, and died in 1913.

John Cooke Martin was educated in public school, and since youth has engaged in farming. He has gained prominence in his chosen occupation, and is an outstanding citizen of his community. His political affiliation is with the Republican party. A Presbyterian, he is a member of the United Presbyterian Church at Superior. Recently he was elected to life membership in The Nebraskana Society.

On November 17, 1885, Mr. Martin was united in marriage to Agnes Speer at Superior. Mrs. Martin, who was born at Belfast, September 29, 1861, is a dressmaker. There are three children: Anna Mary, born November 27, 1887, married Thomas Howard Harvey; William James, born October 7, 1889, married Ivah Haught; and Floyd French, born July 22, 1908. Residence: Bostwick.


Melville Eugene Martin

A pioneer resident of Nebraska is Melville Eugene Martin who has lived in Fillmore County for the past 62 years. He was born at Kekoskee, Wisconsin, August 24, 1853, the son of Elisha Littlefield and Delight Adelia (Nichols) Martin. His father, who was a descendant of Captain Robert Martin, Revolutionary War soldier in New York, was born at Hornellsville, New York, August 22, 1827, and died at Fairmont, Nebraska, December 16, 1915. His mother was born at Hornellsville, and died at Fairmont, April 12, 1909.

Mr. Martin attended grade school and a part of high school in Nebraska. He was connected with the International Harvester Company for a time, was salesman for the Tropical Oil Company, and was salesman for the St. Paul Harvester Company. He is now retired. A Republican, he served as township clerk at Fairmont for four years and police judge for two years.

He is a member of the Ancient Order of United Workmen, was formerly a member of the Knights of Pythias, and is a member of the Nebraskana Society. He is affiliated with the Federated Church. During the late war Mr. Martin served in various loan drives.

He was married to Emma Gertrude Sexton at Fairmont, April 3, 1882; she was born at Auroraville, Wisconsin in 1857. Their children are: Eva Faye, born June 10, 1883; Elisha L., born September 26, 1885, who married Laura Cleveland; Julia Delight, born February 29, 1888, who married Ernest Temple Parnell; Allison Laurel, born May 11, 1892; and Edith Sexton, born October 16, 1896.

Elisha Littlefield Martin, father of Melville E. Martin, came to Nebraska in 1868, and homesteaded near Fillmore Mills where he laid out the village of Fillmore. He took a prominent part in the organization of the county, village, and state, serving as postmaster, mayor, and city councilman. He was a leader in the forming of the Odd Fellows Lodge at Fairmont. Residence: Fairmont.


Oscar Ross Martin

For the past 17 years Oscar Ross Martin has made his home in Nebraska. He was born at Farmington, Iowa, October 4, 1884, the son of Peter and Amelia (Ross) Martin. His father was a native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and was born in April, 1851. He was a clergyman, of German descent and his death occurred at Brighton, Illinois, February 1, 1921. Oscar Martin's mother was born at Warsaw, Illinois, in April, 1856, and died in the same state at Altamont, in February, 1908. Her ancestry was German and Scotch.

As a boy Mr. Martin attended the public schools at various points in Illinois and Missouri. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree at Central Wesleyan College in 1907 and his Master of Arts degree at the University of Illinois in 1913. Mr. Martin has also studied at the University of Wisconsin. His fraternity is Delta Sigma Lambda and he holds membership in Beta Gamma Sigma and Alpha Kappa Psi.

Mr. Martin affiliates with the Republican party. He is the author of numerous articles on business subjects. His career as an educator began when he became an instructor in the Granite City, Illinois, high school. Later he became an instructor in the University of Illinois. Then he came to Lincoln and has been successively assistant professor, associate professor, and professor in the University of Nebraska; he is now chairman of the department of business organization and management at the University. Mr. Martin is a partner in the firm of Martin and Cole, public accountants, at Lincoln, Nebraska, is a member of the American Institute of Accountants, and has been recognized as a certified public accountant by the state of Nebraska.

Mr. Martin is a member of St. Paul's Methodist Episcopal Church, the Young Men's Christian Association, and the Lincoln Chamber of Commerce, the Polemic Club and the Crucible Club. He is active in club affairs and is particularly interested in Masonic affairs, being a member of the Scottish Rite and Shrine. He is a Kiwanian, and a member of the Nebraskana Society.

Mr. Martin is a past president of the Nebraska Chapter of the American Association of University Professors, and is a member of the American Economic Association and the American Association of University Instructors in Accounting.

The social clubs to which Mr. Martin belongs are the Lincoln University Club, the Lincoln Country Club and the Shrine Golf Club. His sports are golf and fishing.

On August 12, 1913, Mr. Martin was united in marriage to Hazel Hardin at Knightstown, Indiana. Mrs. Martin was born February 21, 1886, at Knightstown.

Wade Randall Martin

Wade Randall Martin, president of the Commercial Banking Company at Stratton, Nebraska, was born at Fremont, June 25, 1891, the son of Grant G. and Laura (Dickson) Martin. His father and mother were both born in Iowa and are still living at Lincoln, Nebraska. His father, former attorney-general of Nebraska, is a practicing lawyer and was a member of the Supreme Court Commission.

Mr. Martin atended (sic) the Fremont High School, Lincoln High School and received his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Nebraska in 1911, where he is a member of Sigma Xi. Upon leaving college, he became assistant cashier of the Nebraska State Bank at Lincoln, Nebraska, resigning to enter the World War.

He attended the 2nd Officers Training Camp at Fort Snelling, Minnesota and was commissioned a first lieutenant of infantry on completion of the course. He was sent to Fort Brady, Michigan, and stationed with the 41st Infantry Regular Army on guard duty at the Sault Ste. Marie Locks and shortly afterwards was transferred to the 314th Cavalry at San Antonio (sic), Texas, one of the fifteen cavalry regiments just created. He served with this regiment about seven months when orders from General Pershing converted all fifteen Cavalry regiments into Field Artillery. He was sent to the School of Fire for Field Artillery at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, and upon graduation from this course of instruction was retained in the school of fire as instructor in gunnery and during this time was promoted to captain, Field Artillery. He is a member of the American Legion, organizinz (sic) the local post No. 281 at Stratton, Nebraska in 1920, and was commander of the local post, two years 1920-21, a member of the executive committee, four years, vice-department commander, and department commander, 1928-1929, of Nebraska.

On Eeptember (sic) 20, 1921, he was married to Emma Louise Mote at Denver, Colorado. She was born at Plainview, Nebraska, March 12, 1893. In 1912 she was graduated with honors from the Conservatory of Music at the University School of Music at Lincoln, and was a member of the Delta Delta Delta sorority. She is active in the Stratton Woman's Club and a member of the American Woman's Club and a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. She is also a leader in musical circles, having given instructions in the piano branch continuously since moving to Stratton.

Mr. Martin is a Republican. He is a member of the Methodist Church, the Chamber of Commerce, the Ancient Free and Accepted Masons, Robert Burns Lodge No. 173 served as its master in 1925 and is a life member of the Nebraskana Society. In 1925 Mr. Martin was partly instrumental in the organizing and building of a community building and dedicated to the veterans of all wars at the cost of $30,000.00, and the active management of same is in his hands. He is fond of golf. His club is the University Club of Lincoln. Residence: Stratton.


Warren Binney Martin

A resident of Nebraska all his life, Warren Binney Martin has been engaged in the grocery business at Albion for the past 31 years. He was born at Maxwell, Nebraska, and is the son of Thompson Frederick and Lydia Eliza (Thorpe) Martin. His father, who was born at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, July 23, 1847, and died at Albion, September 29, 1921, was a telephone exchange manager; he moved to Nebraska in 1875 and was agent for the Union Pacific Railroad at Maxwell for many years. His mother was born at Gainsville, New York, January 9, 1848, and died at Albion, March 18, 1890.

Mr. Martin received his elementary and high school education at Albion and later was a student at Elliotts Business College, Burlington, Iowa. He is the owner of a grocery store at Albion, owns a half interest in the Albion Silver Fox Company, and was a director in the First National Bank of Albion.

He is vice president of the Albion Lions Club, is a member of the Albion Chamber of Commerce, president of the Albion Building and Loan Association, and is affiliated with the Congregational Church there. His fraternal organizations include, Knights of Pythias, Royal Highlanders, and Scottish Rite and Shrine bodies of the Masons. His favorite sport is golfing, and his hobbies are flower gardening and woodwork. He is a Master Merchant of Nebraska, one of the ten merchants with this honor.

His marriage to Olga Pearl Whiting occurred at Albion, April 17, 1901; she was born at Albion, April 7, 1880, the daughter of George W. Whiting and Isadora (Havens) Whiting, early settlers of Boone County. Mrs. Martin first saw the light of day in a sod house. She is a member of the Eastern Star, having at times held various offices in the Albion Chapter. She is also active in her church and in the P. E. O.

Mr. Martin served in the Nebraska National Guard for seven years. Residence: Albion.


Josephine Sutton Marty

Born in Nemaha County, Nebraska, August 11, 1882, Josephine Sutton Marty is one of the five daughters of George Henry and Maria Catherine (Hughes) Sutton. Her father was born at Mount Vernon, Ohio, October 19, 1851, and was a miller and farmer, prominent in political and civic affairs. His parents came from Cornwall, England, to America in 1842, locating in Knox County, Ohio. George Henry Sutton's father learned the milling trade in England.

Maria Catherine Hughes, who was born in Nemaha County, August 2, 1857, died there on October 11, 1909. Her grandparents were also English, her mother's father a physician and slave holder of West Virginia, and her father's father a painter.

Josephine Sutton Marty received her elementary education in Nemaha County schools until 1894, and was graduated from Howe High School in 1896, having attended Auburn High School two years. Following this she had four years' experience as a teacher in the public schools. She has had extension work in history and parliamentary law, and was graduated from St. Joseph Business College in 1902. Her business career has been varied, and covers eight years with the Armourdale Foundry Company and the Kansas City Rubber and Belting Company in addition to her present position as special representative of the Bankers Life Insurance Company of Nebraska.

She was married to Edward L. Marty, at Auburn, Nebraska, on November 29, 1910. Mr. Marty is the head of a department in the Bankers Life Insurance Company, and the youngest son of Matthias Marty, one of the pioneers largely instrumental in the development of Kansas City, and the owner of much real estate.

Since her marriage Mrs. Marty has been active in the Lincoln Woman's Club, in which she held the office of president 1924-26, and secretary, 1922-24. She served as secretary of the State League of Women Voters 1929-31, and president of the Native Sons and Daughters of Nebraska 1930-31.

She is a member of St. Matthews Episcopal Church, the Nebraskana Society, the Young Women's Christian Association, the Thursday Morning Lecture Circle, the Tuesday Review Club, and a charter member of the Woman's City Club of Kansas City. Residence: Lincoln. (Photograph on Page 774).
