In 1880, he married Mary Elizabeth Kirkpatrick at Homer, Illinois. Mrs. Needham, who is an amateur flower gardener, is of English and Scotch descent; her mother's home was Berwick-on-Tweed, England, while her father was a native of Scotland. Their son, L. K. Needham is a civil engineer at Portland, Oregon, a daughter, Daisy J., is a teacher, and the other daughter, Emma, is married to J. M. Gilmore of Red Cloud, Nebraska. Residence: Bostwick.


John Marshall Neely

On January 28, 1870, John M. Neely was born at Owensville, Indiana, the son of John Marshall and Ellen (Smith) Neely. His father, born in Indiana, was a physician and surgeon, who served as first surgeon in the 120th Indiana Volunteer Infantry. His paternal great grandfather came to America from Scotland in 1754 and served in the Revolution. John Marshall Neely died at Elmwood, Nebraska.

Ellen Neely, who was a teacher, was born at Vincennes, Indiana, and died at Owensville, October 10, 1883. Her maternal great grandfather, Daniel McClure, was a soldier in the Revolution.

Dr. Neely attended the elementary schools of Indiana and later was a student at Wentfield College in Illinois and the National Normal University at Lebanon, Ohio. He was awarded the M. D. degree at the Kentucky School of Medicine in 1896. He has lived in Nebraska for the past 35 years.

His marriage to Edna Perry was solemnized at Ashland, Saunders County, Nebraska, December 30, 1902. Mrs. Neely, who was born in Iowa, November 10, 1882, is a choir leader and music teacher. The following children were born to this union: John, Jr., born September 23, 1904, who married Mary Barlow; Elsie Sanderson, born April 12, 1905, who married H. A. Sanderson; Alene, born December 14, 1910; Orvis, born January 30, 1912; Katherine, born April 19, 1913; Elizabeth, August 26, 1916; and Patricia, born January 1, 1927. John was graduated in medicine in 1930, making the fourth physician in the Neely family.

Dr. Neely is a member of the Sons of Veterans and the Sons of the Revolution, the Lancaster County Medical Association, the Nebraska State Medical Society, and the American Medical Association. He is a member of the Elm Park Methodist Church of Lincoln, and is a Republican. Residence: Lincoln.


William Albert Kneer Neely

W. A. K. Neely, pioneer farmer in Waync County, Nebraska, has lived there since February 17, 1878. He was born near Honey Grove, Pennsylvania, October 20, 1853, the son of John and Margaret Jane (Ewing) Neely. His father, who was a farmer, was born at Waterloo, Pennsylvania, June 6, 1814, and died near Honey Grove, May 30, 1892; Mr. Neely's great grandparents were John and Margaret (McFeaters) Neely; and his grandparents were William and Sadie (Harvey) Neely. William Neely, the grandfather, purchased land and settled in Juniata County on territory formerly belonging to the Indians, The Neely family was prominent in the progress of Pennsylvania, and came from Scotland and Ireland early in the history of the colonies.

His mother was born at Blaine, Pennsylvania, November 20, 1831, and died at Mercersburg, Franklin County, Pennsylvania, October 25, 1925. She was the daughter of William and Sarah (Allison) Ewing, who were also settlers of Pennsylvania.

Mr. Neely attended the Farmers Grove School at Tuscarora, and later attended Tuscarora Academy. He has been a successful farmer in Wayne County for the past 50 years. He has been a member and treasurer of the local school board for the past 43 years. He is affiliated with the First Presbyterian Church, is a member of the Nebraskana Society, and holds membership in the Democratic party. He was active in liberty loan drives during the World War.

He was married December 29, 1881, to Azile May Burchfield at Mifflentown, Juniata County, Pennsylvania. Mrs. Neely was born at Mifflentown, February 23, 1856, She was a teacher before her marriage, and taught the first school at Wakefield, Nebraska. She was the daughter of Lewis and Jane (McKennon) Burchfield, who were Scotch and Irish, and was a direct descendant of Lord Burcham Burchfield.

They have two children: John Burchfield, born July 31, 1883, who married Grace Hacker, and who is a civil engineer at St. Louis; and William Harvey, born May 17, 1892, who married Gladys Gertrude Orr, and who is an auctioneer and farmer at Wayne. Mr. Neely's grandchildren are: William Harvey Neely, Jr., born July 27 1921; and John Orr Neely, born August 31, 1929. His hobby is reading. Residence: Wayne.


William Franklin Negele

William Franklin Negele was born at Walnut, Iowa, on December 2, 1866, the son of Charles Frederick and Mary Ann (Zollinger) Negele. His father was born in Germany, and died at Altoona, Pennsylvania, May 26, 1899; he was a clergyman.

His mother, Mary Ann Zollinger, was born at Sandusky, Ohio, and died at Cleveland, in December, 1891. Mr. Negele was educated in the public schools. On August 24, 1896, he married Olive Corinne Rhodes, who was born at Freeport, Illinois, in 1866. The marriage was solemnized at Freeport. They have one son, John Herbert, who married Martha Hanna.

Mr. Negele is a member of the Republican Party. For many years he was associated with the Thompson-Beldon Company. He is a member of the Calvary Baptist Church, and has been treasurer of the building fund since 1918. He is affiliated with the Omaha Chamber of Commerce, the Travelers Aid, and is a member of Ak-Sar-Ben. He is active in the work of the Kiwanis Club.

For 45 years Mr. Negele has taken a leading part in the civic, social and commercial affairs of his community. Residence: Omaha.


John G. Neihardt

John G. Neihardt, poet laureate of Nebraska, was born near Sharpsburg, Illinois, January 8, 1881, son of Nicholas N. and Alice May (Culler) Neihardt.

He attended the Nebraska Normal College where he completed the scientific course. He was much encouraged by the two presidents of the school while he was there, J. M. Pile and U. S. Coun, who provided him with all possible facilities for an education.

His first volume of poetry to the public was A Bundle of Myrth in 1908. He has written also The Song of Hugh (Hess (1915), The Song of Three Friends (1919), and The Song of the Indian Wars, (1925). Listed below are his more important contributions to literature: The Divine Enchantment (1900); The Lonesome Trail (1907); Man-Song (1909); The River and I (1910); The Dawn-Builder (1911); The Stranger at the Gate (1912); Death of Agrippina (1913); Life's Lure (1914); The Quest (1916); The Splendid Wayfaring (1920); Two Mothers (1921); and Laureate Address (1921). Mr. Neihardt was honored by Nebraska appointing him poet laureate of the state, and by making him in 1923 an honorary professor of poetry at the University of Nebraska. In 1917

he was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Letters.

On November 29, 1908, Mr. Neihardt was married to Mona Martinsen, a sculptress, of New York City. They have four children. Residence: New York City.


Monroe Winfred Neihart

For the last 58 years Monroe W. Niehart has been a leading citizen of Nebraska. He was born in Lehigh County, Pennsylvania, November 13, 1853, the son of Daniel Peter and Eliza (Peters) Neihart. His father, a surgeon who served in the Civil War, was born on the Pacific Ocean and died at Nebraska City, Otoe County, Nebraska, June 18, 1905. His mother was born at Allentown, Pennsylvania, November 24, 1824, and died at Nebraska City, June 10, 1917. Her ancestry was German.

Mr. Neihart attended the public schools of Pennsylvania, Illinois and Iowa. Later he was a student at the Iowa City College, Iowa. For the past seven years he has been justice of the peace at Nebraska City, and has taken an active part in the political life of his community for many years. Since the age of 16 he has been engaged in the photography business, and much of his time has been devoted to government photography, photographing convicts and similar work.

He is the editor of the Poultry Review and the Wyandotte Herald. For 25 years he has been connected with community band and orchestra work in Otoe County. He is president of the Isaac Walton League, Chapter 76; he has been secretary and financier of Ancient Order of United Workmen for the past 30 years, and is a Grand Lodge officer of the state and Great Chief of Record of the Fraternal Order of Redmen. He is a member of the Red Cross, and the Ancient Order of United Workmen, the American Order of Redmen, the Chamber of Commerce, and is a member of the committee on State Forestration.

He was united in marriage with Matilda Hauber at Nebraska City, January 5, 1881. Mrs. Neihart was born at Alsace Lorraine, December 16, 1861. Her grandfather was professor in a college in Germany. She died at Nebraska City, August 7, 1924. They have two children: Grace, born October 30, 1880, who married Marshall Ingraham; and John W., born September 21, 1890. Residence; Nebraska City.


Elmer F. Neil

Elmer F. Neil, one of the outstanding farmers of Dawson County, Nebraska, was born at Berlin, Missouri, December 27, 1873, the son of Lloyd N. and Sarah Elizabeth (Jolly) Neil. His father, who was a farmer, was born at Easton, Missouri, January 6, 1845, and died at Cozad, September 8, 1921; his ancestry was Scotch and Irish. His mother, whose ancestry was Holland Dutch, was born in Breckenridge County, Kentucky, August 27, 1852.

Mr. Neil is president of the Dawson County Farm Bureau, is president of the Lexington Cooperative Company, and is a member of the Lexington Kiwanis Club. He was selected as one of the 1929 Master Farmers of Nebraska, and has always been a progressive citizen of Cozad. He is affiliated with the Methodist Episcopal Church of Lexington.

On October 20, 1898, he was married at Lexington, to Ethel J. Grafton. Mrs. Neil, whose ancestors came to this country from Scotland and England in the early history of America, was born at Lexington, October 20, 1880. They have three children: Harley G., born January 31, 1902, who married Helen Christianson; Noel J., born October 4, 1909; and Wayne F., born May 11. 1916. Residence: Cozad.


Erland N. P. Nelson

Born at Ruskin, Nebraska, July 28, 1897, Erland N. P. Nelson is the son of Hans and Frederikke (Olsen) Nelson. His father, who was born at Odense, Denmark, died in 1912, and his mother, born at Borhholm, Denmark, is living.

Erland Nelson was graduated from Ruskin High School, attended Hastings College, and received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Peru State Teachers College. His Master of Arts degree was awarded by the University of Nebraska. His post graduate work was taken at the University of Nebraska where he will take his doctor's degree.

Mr. Nelson's fraternities include Phi Delta Kappa, Sigma Tau Delta and Alpha Sigma Phi. While at Peru he was a member of the debating team in 1921. He is a member of the Nebraska State Teachers' Association, and at the present time is chairman of the research committee of the National Lutheran Educational Conference.

A rural school teacher in Dundy County, and superintendent of schools at Comstock from 1922 to 1924, he was superintendent at Juniata, 1924-26. Since 1926 Mr. Nelson has been associated with Dana College, as head of the department of commerce until 1929, and is acting president 1929-31. For the past year he has been president of the college.

Among his contributions to literature are Success of Students Who Transfer from College to College (1930); and How to Improve The College Teacher (1981).

On August 6, 1924, Mr. Nelson was united in marriage to Naida Editha Randall at Juniata. Mrs. Nelson, who was born at Sitka, Kansas, October 27, 1896, is an educator of English descent. There are two children, Isabelle Frederikke, born July 23, 1925; and Erland Randall, born June 4, 1928.

Mr. Nelson is a Democrat. His religious affiliation is with the First Lutheran Church of Blair. Residence: Blair. (Photograph in Album).


Grover E. Nelson

Grover E. Nelson, banker, was born near Bennington, Nebraska, February 3, 1892, and with the exception of two years has always resided in Nebraska. He is the son of Hans C. and Christiana (Rasmussen) Nelson, natives of Denmark. Hans C. Nelson was born at Langeland, Denmark, October 4, 1855, coming to the United States as a young man. A farmer by occupation, he spent his later years in Nebraska and died at Elkhorn, May 12, 1911. His wife was born in Langeland, April 15, 1859, and died at Bennington, January 13, 1900.

Educated in country school district No. 44 until twelve years of age, Grover E. Nelson was a student in district 58, and then attended Lutheran Parochial School two years, and six months at Elkhorn town school. From November, 1909 until August, 1914 he attended Fremont Normal College a total of 122 weeks. During this time he completed a commercial course and a teacher's course and took some arts and science, but did not finish.

Mr. Nelson taught school in St. Helena, Nebraska the school year of 1913 and 1914. On May 20, 1915 he commenced as janitor, and assistant to the bookkeeper at the Citizen's State Bank of Parker, South Dakota. He was made assistant cashier of the State Bank of Elkhorn in January, 1917, and on April 18, 1917 came to Millard to become cashier and director of the Farmers State Bank of Millard.

On June 4th of the following year he was married to Mary (Mayme) Dorothy von Dohren at Omaha. Mrs. Nelson, who was a bank bookkeeper four years before her marriage, was born at Millard October 28, 1894. There are two children, Grove Edwin, born July 3, 1920 and Dorothy Ann, born April 29, 1925.

ing the position that business and politics do not mix. He is a Mason and a member of Nebraska Consistory of Scottish Rite Masons. His religious affiliation is with the St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church at Millard. During the late War Mr. Nelson was active in Liberty loan drives, exceeding his quota for the bank in every drive, whether for bonds, war savings stamps or treasury certificates. He enjoys hunting, particularly the annual fall hunt for migratory birds. Residence: Millard.


Lemist George Nelson

Lemist George Nelson, lawyer, has been in active practice since 1929. He was born at Fremont, Nebraska, June 2, 1906, the son of Louis and Marie (Forbes) Nelson.

His father was born at Marshalltown, Iowa, in November, 1875. He is district sales manager of the Harris Coal Company of Omaha where he was a member of the Board of Education from 1920-1924. His parents were Danish and came to America about 1860 where they were pioneers in Pierce and Antelope counties. Marie, wife of Louis, was born at Hooper, Nebraska, September 6, 1880. She was descended from early Dutch settlers of Pennsylvania.

Mr. Nelson attended Omaha Central High School from which he was graduated in 1924, and in 1929 received the Bachelor of Laws degree from Creighton University. He is a member of Delta Theta Phi, of which he was secretary and treasurer, and of Alpha Rho Upsilon.

On August 2, 1927, Mr. Nelson was married to Flora Bernice Jones. Mrs. Nelson was born at Harvard, Nebraska, August 11, 1905. They have one daughter, Shirley Mae, born August 19, 1930.

Mr. Nelson is a Republican and is now county attorney of Rock County. He has been a resident of Nebraska all his life. He is a member of the State Bar Association, and in 1931 and 1932 was a member of its advisory council. He was president of the Bassett Lions Club in 1930-31, is an Odd Fellow and Mason, and is a member of the Nebraskana Society. His hobbies are traveling and reading. Residence: Bassett. Oliver Nicolas Nelson

Oliver N. Nelson, merchant and banker of Nebraska City, Otoe County, Nebraska, has been a resident of this state for 65 years, and has been a leader in the civic and business affairs of his community all his adult years. He was born at Visby, Gotland, Sweden, April 11, 1859, and came to America with his parents in 1865. His father, Nicholas Peter Nelson, was born at Stockholm, Sweden, October 2, 1832. He was a shoemaker both in Sweden and at Nebraska City, where he died October 10, 1907.

Mary (Clawson) Nelson, his mother, was born at Visby, January 7, 1834, and died at Nebraska City, October 22, 1913.

Mr. Nelson attended the elementary schools in Nebraska City and then entered the business world. From 1886 to 1920 he was in the shoe retail business. He has been vice president of the Nebraska City National Bank since 1915; has been president of the First Trust Company since its organization in 1924; and has been a director in the Commonwealth Building and Loan Association since 1927. A Republican, he served Nebraska City as mayor in 1897-98-99.

On July 12, 1898, he was united in marriage with Margaret Gabrielle Hershey at Nebraska City. Mrs. Nelson, who was born at Nebraska City, February 21, 1871, is descended on the maternal side from Roger Williams. Three children were born to this union, two of whom are living: Josephine, born September 22, 1899, who died in infancy; Pauline, born May 31, 1902; and Karl, born May 19, 1905.

During the World War Mr. Nelson was active in loan drives, and at the present time is a member of the Red Cross and the Salvation Army. He served as a member of the school board at Nebraska City from 1914 to 1929. He is an Elk and a Mason, and is a member of the Nebraska City Country Club. Residence: Nebraska City.


Robert Albert Nelson

Robert Albert Nelson, lawyer was born at Omaha, August 27, 1890. He is the son of Nels J. and Annie (Peterson) Nelson. His father, a native of Sweden, came to America in 1882, and was associated with the Chicago, Burlington and Qunicy Railroad at the time of his death on March 17, 1927. Annie Peterson Nelson was also a native of Sweden, and resides at Omaha.

Robert A. Nelson was graduated from Omaha High School in 1908 and received his LL. B. from the University of Omaha in 1914. Upon his admission to the bar in that year he entered upon the active practice of his profession. In 1925 he was U. S. Commissioner for Nebraska. He is a Republican.

During the World War he was a yeoman first class in the United States Navy. He is a member of Omaha Post No. 1 of the American Legion, and is a Mason. He belongs to the Nebraska State and Omaha-Douglas County Bar Associations, and is a member of the First Baptist Church. His clubs are the Omaha Athletic and the Happy Hollow Country Club, and his hobby is golf. Residence: Omaha.


John Andrew Nepper

The Reverend John Andrew Nepper, Catholic priest, was born at Fort Atkinson, Iowa, November 30, 1877, son of Christopher and Catherine (Smith) Nepper.

The father was born at Port Washington, Wisconsin, and died at Gregory, South Dakota, January 22, 1924. He was a teacher and farmer, whose parents came from Belgium and Luxemburg in 1850. His wife, Catherine, was born in Wiennishiek County, Iowa, in April, 1856. Her family having settled in America, coming from Alsace-Lorraine.

Educated first in the elementary schools of Iowa, Father Nepper attended Randolph, Nebraska, High School graduating in 1897. He received his Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees from St. John's University at Collegeville, Minnesota, where he was a member of the choir and active in dramatics. Afterwards, Father Nepper attended the University of Innsbruck, Austria.

Ordained in 1908, Father Nepper was assistant pastor at Cedar Rapids, Nebraska, for two years, and since 1910 has been rector of St. Mary's Church at Rushville. He is superintendent and teacher in St. Mary's High School, and has erected a rectory enlarged his church and built several school and other buildings, during his present pastorate. For years he has been a member of the Diocesan school board and a member of the board of examiners for junior clergy.

He is the author of various magazine articles, and School Legislation in Nebraska (1919). During the late war, Father Nepper was a leader in his community in the Knights of Columbus war drives. He is a member of the Nebraska State Teachers' Association, the Chamber of Commerce, the City Library Commission, and the National Geographic Society. His hobby is economic and social questions, and educational progress. Residence: Rushville.


John Wallace Neslund

John Wallace Neslund has been a practicing physician and surgeon at Cozad since June 1, 1915. He was born near Galva, in Henry County, Illinois, June 19, 1882, son of Andrew O. and Carrie (Wexell) Neslund. The father, born in Sweden, March 11, 1831, came to

America with his parents in 1854, settling at Bishop Hill, in Henry County.

Andrew O. Neslund was a member of the old Swedish Bishop Hill Colony in Henry County, Illinois. This colony consisted of about 3000 Swedish settlers who came to the United States between 1846 and 1856. Most of them left the country of their birth in order to obtain religious freedom in the new world. After the Colony was dissolved in 1860 and 1861, the land the Colony had acquired was divided amongst its members and Mr. Neslund also received a small tract upon which he then made his home. In later years he purchased considerable more land adjoining this and continued in the farming and stock raising business until 1909 when he retired and moved to Galva. He died at Galva July 2, 1916. Mr. Neslund was first married to Helena Matilda Newstrand, at Bishop Hill, in 1859. She was born in Sweden, January 7, 1832, and died October 20, 1876. She left five children, two girls and three boys. Mr. Neslund married Carrie Wexell, September 11, 1878. She was born in Sweden, September 16, 1859, and came to this country with her parents in 1865. Two children were born to this union, John Wallace being the eldest. She still resides at Galva.

Upon his graduation from high school, John Wallace Neslund attended Mendota College at Mendota, Illinois, receiving his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1907. Educated for the ministry, he was ordained to the Christian Church at Davenport, Iowa in 1909. He held pastorates at Alexis and Rock Falls in Illinois, and at Cozad, Brock, Nebraska City and Valparaiso in Nebraska. He received his medical degree from Cotner University in 1915. He was valedictorian of his class at Cotner.

Dr. Neslund was married first to Grace Isador Dickinson at Davenport, Iowa, on December 31, 1907. She was born in New York City, June 28, 1884, and died at Grand Island, April 1, 1924. She was of English descent, active in church work, a member of the Woman's Club and the Women's Christian Temperance Union. There is one child to this marriage, June M., born June 29, 1912. She was graduated from Cozad High School in 1930. Since that time she has specialized in elocution, piano and violin. She is also her father's office assistant and secretary.

On June 19, 1925, Dr. Neslund was united in marriage to Grace T. Walford at Burwell, Nebraska. Mrs. Neslund's parents live near Burwell. She was born near Gresham, February 13, 1899. She is prominent in church and civic affairs, is a member of the Woman's Club, and a member and former state director of the Women's Christian Temperance Union. They have one child, Doyle Jo, born August 13, 1929.

Dr. Neslund served as municipal judge in Cozad from 1919-24. He is affiliated with the Cozad Christian Church, is a member of the national, state and local medical associations, the Modern Woodmen of America and the Nebraskana Society. His hobby is music, especially the pianoaccordian. Residence: Cozad. (Photograph in Album).


Henry M. Nestor

Henry M.. Nestor, a lifetime resident of Omaha, was born there on December 8, 1876, the son of Henry Frederich and Bertha (Windheim) Nestor. His father, who was a business man, was born at Gustrov, Germany, March 2, 1850, and died at Denver, Colorado, July 19, 1909. His mother was born at Chicago, Illinois, February 15, 1854. Her parents were born in Germany; her mother was descended from the Saxon nobility.

Mr. Nestor is director of the Orchard Wilhelm Company of Omaha. He has always been active in promoting the progress of his community and state. He is a member of the Red Cross, the Community Chest, the Omaha Chamber of Commerce, and the Continental Club.

He is a Mason, and is affiliated with the First Christian Church of Omaha.

On April 28, 1904, he was united in marriage with Mae Shields at Omaha. Mrs. Nestor, who was born at Omaha, is of Scotch descent. They have two children: Florence, born September 1, 1905, who married Rudolph Helgren; and Henry, born October 25, 1907, who is a student at George Washington University at Washington, District of Columbia. Residence: Omaha.


George Emile Neuhaus

George Emile Neuhaus, physician and educator at Omaha, was born at Berlin, Germany, February 27, 1866. His father, Carl Neuhaus, who was a physician was born at Stargard, Germany, and died at Berlin, Germany, in 1895. He is descended from an old Westphalian family; his grandfather built the Berlin-Hamburg railroad and was president of the railroad company until his death.

His mother was born at Danzig, Germany, and died at Berlin. Her father was a civil engineer who built the Rhenish Railway and the railway bridge at Coblenz, Germany. He built many railways in Turkey for the Turkish government who had applied to the Prussian government for an engineer capable of doing this work.

Dr. Nenhaus attended the Gymnasium at Gorlitz, Germany; was graduated from the Gymnasium at Berlin, 1886; and received his M. D. degree in 1891 at Bellevue Hospital Medical College in New York City. He was a student at the University of Berlin, 1890-1896-1901; and attended Harvard Medical College in 1909 and 1919. He is a member of Phi Rho Sigma.

He served his interneship at Bellevue Hospital, New York, 1891; practiced medicine in New York City, 1892-1902; practiced in Denver, Colorado, 1903-22; and since 1922 has been prominent in the medical world at Omaha. He served as head of the department of neurology and psychiatry at the University of Colorado School of Medicine from 1907 to 1922, and is now professor in medicine at Creighton University School of Medicine. He was director of the Mount Airy Sanitarium at Denver. He is the author of many medical articles in different professional journals.

Dr. Nenhaus is a member of the Omaha-Douglas Medical Society; the Nebraska State Medical Society; the American Medical Association; the American Psychiatric Association; the American Psychopathological Association; and the Central Neuropsychiatric Association. He is a member of the Nebraskana Society and the Red Cross, and is a Mason. His sport is hiking, while his hobbies are photography, reading, and writing. He is affiliated with the First Unitarian Church of Omaha.

He was united in marriage with Clara Ruth Mozzar in 1922. There are two children born of a previous marriage: Ralph, born September 26, 1896; Karla Elizabeth, born January 26, 1905; and Ruth, born May 26, 1923; and Gisa Marie, born June 17, 1925, the latter two being born by the second marriage. Ralph, who graduated from Boston Technical Institute, is an engineer, Karla Elizabeth is a teacher of history in the high school of Boulder, Colorado. Residence: Omaha.


Arthur Lorenzo Neumann

Arthur Lorenzo Neumann, prominent in the banking world for many years, was born at Andover, Illinois, February 3, 1870, son of Valentine and. Annie (Wickstrom) Neumann. Valentine Neumann was a native of Lagenlonsheim, Prussia, born April 15, 1841, who came to America in 1857, and served as a private in Company B, 42nd Illinois Infantry in the Civil War. After the war he came to Nebraska and settled near Oakland, where he died on July 1, 1917, Annie Wickstrom was born in Sweden, October 14, 1849, and came to America with her parents

as a child. Her father was captain of Company B, 57th Illinois Volunteer Infantry in the Civil War. She died at Lynn Center, Illinois, September 6, 1877.

Educated in the public schools, Arthur Lorenzo Neumann came to Nebraska in October, 1881, and in 1892 entered the Farmers and Merchants National Bank at Oakland, as a clerk. He is now president of this bank, and has a wide public record. A Democrat, he served as assistant postmaster at Oakland, 1887-90, and as state senator 1927, session of 1929, special session of 1930, and the session and special session of 1931. He was chairman of the Burt County liberty loan committee in the World War, and for more than forty years has been the leader of the local band. He is a member of the Sons of Veterans of the Civil War, the Chamber of Commerce, and the Nebraskana Society, and his fraternal organizations include the Masons, Odd Fellows and Elks. Gus E. Neumann

Gus E. Neumann, county clerk of Hall County, Nebraska, was born in Germany, July 1, 1876, the son of Ernest F. Neumann and Johanne Grabs. His father was born in Bohemia, April 4, 1833, and died at Grand Island, April 4, 1895. Johanne (Grabs) Neumann, a native of Germany, was born September 28, 1839, and died in 1923.

Mr. Neumann was connected with the Grand Island Daily Independent for over 20 years, served as deputy assessor at Grand Island for a time, was county treasurer of Hall County, and is now serving as county clerk. He has been active in the Volunteer Fire Department for more than 20 years, acting as chief for over two years, is a member of the Chamber of Commerce, and is affiliated with St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church.

He holds membership in the Salvation Army, the Young Men's Christian Association, the Elks, Eagles, Odd Fellows, and the Masons. He is a member of The Nebraskana Society, and is connected with the Republican party.

On April 19, 1891, he was married at Grand Island to Edith Wutzler, who was born in Germany, December 15, 1878. Three children were born to this marriage: Irma, July 29, 1897, who married William Reese; and Ernest F., February 27, 1899, who married Margaret Ernest who is manager of the branch office of the Indemnity Insurance Company at Los Angeles. Edith Elane was born October 28, 1920, and died November 10, 1920. Residence: Grand Island.


William Richard Carl Neumarker

William Richard Carl Neumarker, physician and surgeon, was born at Luxemburg, Germany, May 18, 1878, son of Richard William, and Elizabeth O. (Roth) Neumarker. The father, born in Germany, November 6, 1844, died at Columbus, April 1, 1928. He came to Richardson County in 1884, and held the degree of Doctor of Divinity, serving as a chaplain in the Franco-Prussian War. His wife, born in Sonnenburg, Prussia, May 26, 1840, died at Columbus, June 1, 1924. She was a musician.

Dr. Neumarker received his medical degree from Central Medical College at St. Joseph, Missouri, and has been in active practice in Nebraska since 1909. He is a member of the American College of Physicians, the Association of Military Surgeons, the American, Nebraska State and Platte County Medical Associations.

He is a member of the Masons (Shrine), the Modern Woodmen of America, the Chamber of Commerce, the Lions Club and the Nebraska State Historical Society. He served in the World War from June, 1917 until 1919, with the ranks of captain, major and lieutenant-colonel,

Medical Corps, one year with the American Expeditionary Forces. He is a Lutheran.

On February 26, 1908, he was married to Meta Hensley at Columbus. She was born there on April 3, 1880. There are two children, William, born April 3, 1909 and Richard, November 23, 1925. Residence: Columbus.


Harry George Neumayer

Harry George Neumayer, superintendent of schools at Paxton, was born at Grand Island, Nebraska, March 10, 1901, son of Lewis and Elizabeth (Danner) Neumayer. The father was born at Mendota, Illinois, January 15, 1868, and is in the grocery business at Grand Island. His grandfather was born at Haslach Baden, Germany, in 1818, and his grandmother at Kuhr, Switzerland.

Elizabeth Danner was born at Geradville, Pennsylvania, August 2, 1874, and is still living. She is of German ancestry.

Mr. Neumayer attended Platt School until February, 1910 and the Howard School until February, 1914. He completed his public school education at Grand Island and attended Grand Island High School two years 1917 and 1919. During 1920 and 1921 he attended Grand Island College Academy, and in 1926 received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the Grand Island College. During the summer of 1931 he was a graduate student at the University of Nebraska. In 1925 he was president of the Young Men's Christian Association at Grand Island College, and from 1920 until 1926 was a member of the Amphyction Literary Society there. He was a member of the football team 1917 and 1919 and 1920-22-23-24.

Until he finished college he worked for his father in a grocery store and for Charles Schirkofaky of Grand Island. He started teaching at Ord, in 1926, continuing until 1929. Since that time he has been superintendent of schools at Paxton.

On August 11, 1927, he was married to Gladys Eleanor Patton at Broken Bow. Mrs. Neumayer was born at Ellsworth, Nebraska, February 27, 1902, her parents, Robert and Della (Facemire) Patton, being ranchers south of Ellsworth. She is affiliated with the Methodist Church and a member of the Eastern Star.

Mr. Neumayer is a Republican. He is a member of the Methodist Church at Paxton, the Nebraska State Teachers Association, the Commercial Club, and the Grand Island Lodge No. 318 of the Ancient Free and Accepted Masons. John William Neville

For the past 11 years John William Neville has engaged in the practice of medicine, three years in Stromsburg, and eight years in Utica. He was born at Lincoln, Lancaster County, Nebraska, January 17, 1895, the son of John William and Jeanette I. (Swann) Neville. His father, whose ancestry was Irish, was born at Fairview, Fulton County, Illinois, October 17, 1862, and died at Hildreth, Franklin County, Nebraska, March 7, 1909. His mother was born at Portage, Bowling Green County, Ohio, October 3, 1867, of Scotch parentage.

Dr. Neville was graduated from the Hildreth High School, was awarded the B. S. degree, 1917, and the M. D. degree, 1920, at the University of Nebraska, and took a post graduate course at Harvard Medical College. His interneship was served in the city and county hospitals of San Francisco and in Leland Stanford Service. His fraternity is Phi Chi.

He is a member of the American Medical Association, the Nebraska State Medical Association, and the Seward County Medical Society. He is a Mason, holds membership in the American Legion and the Nebraskana Society, and is independent, politically. Dr. Neville has lived in Nebraska for over 36 years, and in January, 1932, moved to York, to engage in practice.
