Emmett G. Shoup

Emmett G. Shoup was born at Pawnee City, Nebraska, June 5, 1904, the son of Charles Albert Shoup and Mary Anna (Hunzeker) Shoup. His father was born in Illinois, and died at Fairbury, Jefferson County, Nebraska, August 27, 1929. He was a carpenter and cabinet maker.

He was educated for the typographical and newspaper business under the supervision of the International Typographical Union. He married Mabel Grace Saulsbury at York, Nebraska, June 5, 1929. She was born at Shreveport, Maryland County, Pennsylvania, July 7, 1904, and was a dental nurse. They have one child, Robert Darrell, born February 5, 1931.

Mr. Shoup is editor and publisher of The Carleton Enterprize. He is independent in politics and has lived in Nebraska twenty-six years. He affiliated with the Methodist Church, is a member of the Elks Club, at Fairbury, Nebraska, and holds membership in the National Printer's Associations.

Mr. Shoup is a member of the Commercial Club, the Nebraskana Society, the National Educational Association and the Community Club at Carleton. He is interested in all sports, and reading and mechanics are his hobbies. Residence: Carleton.


Joseph M. Shramek

Joseph M. Shramek, surgeon, was born in Bohemia, December 22, 1879, son of Michael and Mary (Bohacke) Shramek. He attended public schools and Creighton University and is a member of Phi Beta Pi.

His marriage to Irma Mary Fay. was solemnized at Omaha, on August 14, 1915.

Dr. Shramek has been a member of the faculty of Creighton University Medical College, and in 1913 was a lieutenant in the Medical Reserve Corps. He is a member of the American Legion, the American, Nebraska State, and Omaha Douglas County Medical Associations. Residence: Omaha.


William Ambrose Shreck

An outstanding figure in the professional world of Phelps County, is William Ambrose Shreck, who has been engaged in the practice of medicine at Bertrand, Nebraska, since 1896. He was born at Corydon, Indiana, September 3, 1864, the son of Philip and Sarah Ann (Reed) Shreck. His father, who was a farmer and blacksmith, was born of Swiss parents in Rockingham County, Virginia, September 5, 1832, the son of George Shreck, and died in Harrison County, Indiana, September 1, 1897. His mother was born in Harrison County, May 2, 1836, and died at Corydon, in 1898. She was the daughter of Jesse G. and Barbara (Miller) Reed.

Dr. Shreck was graduated from the New Albany Business College in 1885, having previously taught in a rural school, attended Rush Medical College, 1893-94, and received the M. D. degree at the University of Louisville in 1896, where he was president of the graduating closs (sic).

He served as bookkeeper in the United States National Bank of Holdrege, Nebraska, 1886-89, was postmaster at Holdrege, 1889-93, and since 1896 has been a prominent physician at Bertrand, Nebraska. He is the owner of the Bertrand Telephone Company, a director of the First State Bank of Bertrand, is a member of the Phelps County Medical Society, the 10th Counselor District Medical Society, the Nebraska State Medical Society, and the American Medical Association. He is a member of the Bertrand Community Club, the Red Cross, and the Modern Woodmen of America.

Dr. Shreck was secretary and president of the local school board from 1896-1930, and is a member of the Bertrand Golf Club and the Masonic Lodge. He is affiliated with the First Congregational Church of Bertrand, and during the World War was active in Liberty loan drives, and was secretary and treasurer of the Red Cross.

On December 29, 1896, he married Harriet Ardell Chittenden at Holdrege. Mrs. Shreck, who is a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, was born at Durham, New York, January 11, 1874. She is the daughter of Horace K. and Julia (Montross) Chittenden, and the second great granddaughter of Captain Jairus Chittenden, of Guilford, Connecticut, who participated in the Revolutionary War. William Chittenden was born at Marden, County Kent, England in 1594, and came to America from London in 1639 in the ship St. John, settling in Guilford, thus starting the Chittenden family in America.

Mrs. Shreck is active in the P. E. O. Lodge. They have two children: Neil C., born March 20, 1901, who married Lucyle Mae McGrath, and who is manager of the Bertrand Telephone Company, and who attended the University of Nebraska one year; and Horace W., born July 5, 1907, who is a graduate of Doane College and is now a student at Creighton Medical College. Frank William Shrimpton

For the past 50 years Frank William Shrimpton has been a resident of Nebraska and for a number of years has taken an active part in the civic and business affairs at Ainsworth. He was born at DeKalb, Illinois, December 29, 1874, the son of George and Ann (Freeman) Shrimpton, the former a flour miller who was born at Thames, England, April 9, 1839, and died at Salem, Nebraska, July 16, 1916. His mother was born at Crabs Cross, England, March 31, 1841, and died at Salem, February 22, 1922.

Mr. Shrimpton was graduated from high school and for 13 years was manager of the Greenewood Milling Company. For the past 18 years he has served as manager of the Shrimpton Milling Company at Ainsworth. He is chairman of the Brown County Chapter of the American Red Cross, and has served as president of the Ainsworth Commercial Club for two terms.

He has been a member of the Ainsworth Board of Education for the past 10 years, is past master of the Masons and a Knight Templar, and holds membership in the Ainsworth Country Club where he enjoys golfing. He likes to hunt and fish.

He was married at Salem, Nebraska, to Maude White Spurlock November 21, 1900. Mrs. Shrimpton, who was born at Salem, June 30, 1876, is a granddaughter of J. C. Lincoln, a cousin of Abraham Lincoln. They have two children: Alice, born October 16, 1904, attended Ward-Belmont School for a year, was graduated from the University of Nebraska, and is married to Ivan McKinley Stone; and Virginia Ann, born July 30, 1909, who attended Lindenwood School, St. Charles, Missouri, for two years and later was graduated from the University of Nebraska. Residence: Ainsworth.


J. Frank Shubert

On November 4, 1870, J. Frank Shubert was born in Richardson County, Nebraska, the son of Henry W. and Mary (Griffin) Shubert. His father, who was born in Bath County, Kentucky, June 2, 1834, and died at Shubert, Nebraska, April 19, 1909, was a farmer, commercial apple grower, live stock man, and banker. Germany in 1806, and Rebecca Shubert who was born in Germany, in 1810.

Mary Griffin, his mother, was born in Mason County, Illinois in 1836, and died in Nemaha County, Nebraska, December 25, 1880.

Mr. Shubert attended the public schools of Nemaha County and was graduated from the Auburn High School. He has taken an active part in the political and business affairs of the state since he was a young man. Mr. Shubert is a Republican and has held the following offices: state senator 1906, state representative from Richardson County 1907, treasurer Shuhert school district for the past 20 years. In 1928 he was unsuccessful candidate for the state senate.

For the past 22 years Mr. Shubert has been cashier of the Citizens Bank of Shubert; he is vice president of the Nebraska State Bank of Falls City, with which he has been affiliated for 10 years; for the past 15 years he has been treasurer of the Loess Land and Orchard Company. Like his father he is a commercial apple grower, live stock producer, farmer and banker.

On March 12, 1896, his marriage to Leona M. Athey was solemnized at Shubert. Mrs. Shubert was born in Mason County, Illinois, May 16, 1875. There is one daughter, Nina M., born December 12, 1896, who married Dearle Baker, a World War veteran and a district commander of the American Legion. She attended Shubert High School and was graduated from Falls City High School in 1916; two years later she completed the course at Peru State Teachers' College, Peru, Nebraska. She is an accomplished musician and is the composer of the well-known song Nebraska, and also the state song of the American Legion Auxiliary.

During the World War Mr. Shubert was chairman of the loan drives in his community and chairman of the local Red Cross, was active in United War Work, and sold Liberty bonds and war savings stamps. In 1925 he was commissioned a captain in the Quartermaster Reserve Corps in recognition of his wartime activities.

Mr. Shubert is a deacon and a member of the church board of the Shubert Christian Church. He is a member of the Commercial Club and a state member of the Y. M. C. A. He was recently reelected to the State Board of Agriculture, and holds a life membership in the State Horticultural Society; he is a member of The Nebraskana Society, Shubert Parent-Teachers' Association and the Masons, being affiliated with Hope Lodge No. 29, Ancient Free and Accepted Masons at Nemaha, Mount Sinai Commandery at Falls City, and Sesostris Temple, Ancient Arabic Order Nobles of the Mystic Shrine at Lincoln.

Arthur Harold Shultz

Arthur H. Shultz, prominent banker of Nebraska, was born at Scribner, Dodge County, Nebraska, April 13, 1885, the son of John Wallace, and Mary Ellen Shultz. His father is a retired farmer who was born at Newtown, Fountain County, Indiana, September 25, 1853. His mother was born at Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana, June 22, 1858, and died at Scribner, March 14, 1924. Her ancestry was German.

Mr. Shultz received his early education in the public schools of Scribner; was graduated from Fremont Normal College in 1900; and in 1903 was graduated from Highland Park College. From 1903 to 1905 he was a clerk in the store of W. Gibbs at Bellingham, Washington; managed the lumber yard at Toledo, Iowa, for the Northern Grain Company, 1905-07; farmed near Scribner, 1907-15; was president and manager of the Farmers Co-operative Mercantile Company of Scribner, 1915-21; operating a mill, elevator, and lumber yard there. In 1917 he organized the Farmers State Bank at Scribner. He is now president of the latter and spends some of his time managing several hundred acres of his farm lands near Scribner.

He was chairman of the local Republican committee and from 1916 to 1922 was chairman of the Dodge County Republican Central Committee. He was a member of the Council of Defense during the World War. He holds membership in the Scribner Chamber of Commerce and the Nebraskana Society. He is a Mason. He devotes most of his spare time to reading.

Mr. Shultz was married at Scribner, December 26, 1907, to Mary Ann Mohr. Mrs. Shultz was born at Scribner, March 21, 1883. They have a son, Harold Mohr, born December 27, 1909, who was graduated from the University of Nebraska in 1931; he attended Harvard Law School, Midland College at Fremont, and the University of Colorado, at Boulder. Simon Peter Shultz

Born at Murphysboro, Jackson County, Illinois, September 1, 1848, Simon Peter Shultz has resided in Nebraska fifty-nine years. His parents, Jacob and Rebecca (Will) Shultz, who were of Pennsylvania Dutch extraction, were pioneers in Nebraska in its early days. Jacob Shultz was born in Somerset County, Pennsylvania, January 10, 1814, and at the time of his death at Schuyler, on February 22, 1890, was a retired farmer. Rebecca Will Shultz was born in Somerset County, December 26, 1814, and died at Schuyler, July 26, 1897.

Simon Peter Shultz attended a round log school house in Jackson County, Illinois, and in 1872 came west with his family. He farmed in Colfax County many years, and is now retired. On February 19, 1874, he was married to Esther Elisabeth Perrin at North Bend, Nebraska. Mrs. Shultz, who is of English descent, was born in Hazel Green, Illinois, April 20, 1852. To them the following children were born:

Rosa, born December 8, 1874, married J. Stephen Samis; Eva, born January 6, 1876, married Ben L. Peters, and died October 15, 1925; Walter, born January 1, 1878, married Louise Vincent; Bert, born October 1, 1880, married Minnie McVicker; Florence, born February 12, 1882 married Matt Richards and died May 29, 1916; Logan, born November 5, 1883, married Pearl Vanhousen and died in November, 1923.

Mr. Shultz is a Republican, a Mason and a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church at Rogers. He is also a member of The Nebraskana Society. Residence: Rogers.


Martin Le Roy Shumway

Martin LeRoy Shumway, for many years an outstanding citizen of Lyons, Nebraska, was born in Houston County, Minnesota, December 25, 1874, and died at Lyons, March 19, 1931. He was the son of Jeremiah and Mary Maria (Paine) Shumway, the former a native of Oxford, Massachusetts, born October 15, 1827. A lumberman, he enlisted in Company A, 5th Minnesota Regiment and served till the close of the war. He died in Lyons in 1921. His descent was traced to Peter Shumway a French Huguenot, who came to America in 1695 with Peter Faneuil and Sigourney. Mary M. Paine was born at Pascoag, Rhode Island, July 28, 1832, and died at Lyons, August 19, 1898, a descendant of Roger Williams. In the year 1890 Martin Shumway entered the firm of J. Shumway and Son, and after the death of his father continued in business until his death. He had been a resident of Nebraska fifty years, and his death was mourned by all who knew him. He was a Republican, a member of the Woodmen of the World, the Modern Woodmen of America, the Odd Fellows and the Masons. (Deceased).

ner. His father, a farmer, was born in Warren County, New Jersey, April 9, 1846, and died at Fremont, August 15, 1923; his ancestors were Quakers who came to America from England and Holland. His mother was born of Holland Dutch parentage in Sussex County, New Jersey, January 23, 1846, and died at Fremont, May 20, 1923.

Mr. Sidner attended rural school and in 1897 received the B. S. degree at Fremont College. He was a member of the firm Courtright & Sidner for many years, and is now a member of the firm Courtright, Sidner, Lee & Gunderson, at Fremont. He is director of the Union National Bank, the Union Trust Company, and the Nebraska State Building & Loan Association. A Democrat, he served as county attorney of Dodge County, 1915-16, was a member of the Constitutional Convention of Nebraska, 1919-20, and for 12 years was a member of the board of education of the Fremont School Board.

He was united in marriage with Myrtle Tone Cramer at Fremont, October 31, 1899; she was born at Harrisburg, Daughin County, Pennsylvania, August 28, 1879. Four children were born to this union: Arthur C., born November 5, 1900; John E., born December 4, 1901; Seymour S., Jr., December 15, 1910; and Robert D., born January 13, 1918, who died May 20, 1920.

During the Spanish American War Mr. Sidner served as corporal of Troop K, 3rd United States Volunteer Cavalry, and in the World War he was active as chairman of the County Chapter of the American Red Cross. He holds membership in the United Spanish War Veterans. He is a member of the American Bar Association, the Nebraska State Bar Association, the Dodge County Bar Association, the Fremont Chamber of Commerce, and the Rotary Club. He is a member of the national council and the state committee of the Young Men's Christian Association. He is a Mason. His religious affiliation is with the First Presbyterian Church of Fremont. Lawrence T. Sidwell

Since 1908 Lawrence T. Sidwell has been engaged in the practice of medicine and at this time is a leading physician at Kearney, Nebraska. He was born at Chicago, Illinois, May 19, 1883, the son of Alfred Thomas and Margaret Robertson (Martin) Sidwell. His father was born at Metamora, Illinois, March 30, 1857, and died at Omaha, Nebraska, April 16, 1922: His mother, whose ancestry is Scotch, was born at Mount Pleasant, Iowa, April 21, 1861.

Dr. Sidwell was graduated from the Omaha High School in 1902, received the B. S. degree, 1906, and the M. D. degree, 1908, at the University of Nebraska where he was president of his class and was a member of Phi Rho Sigma. He was employed in the office of the Omaha Daily News from 1898 to 1902, worked in the office of the auditor for the Burlington Railroad during the summer of 1902, traveled for the Cudahy Packing Company during the summer months of 1903, 1904, 1905, 1906, and 1907, and practiced medicine at Glenwood, Iowa, 1908-17.

He served as assistant physician in the Nebraska State Hospital for the Insane at Hastings, Nebraska, 1917, was assistant superintendent in the Insane Hospital at Lincoln, Nebraska in 1918, was superintendent of the Tuberculosis Hospital at Kearney from 1918 to 1923 and served as superintendent of the Nebraska Home for the Feeble Minded at Beatrice from 1923 to 1927. He has been superintendent of the State Hospital for Tuberculars since 1927.

Dr. Sidwell is a member of the Chamber of Commerce at Kearney, is vice president of the Rotary Club there, and holds membership in the First Presbyterian Church. He was president of the Gage County Medical Society, 1924, was president of the Buffalo County Medical Society, 1928-29, and holds membership in the Nebraska State Medical Society. He is an Elk.

On December 7, 1911, Dr. Sidwell was married to Florence Mosher Miller at Omaha. Mrs. Sidwell, whose ancestors were members of the Hyde family in England, was born at Whitehall, Wisconsin, June 3, 1884. She received the A. B. degree at the University of Wisconsin in 1907 and was a teacher before her marriage. Their two children are: Margaret B., born January 4, 1913; and S. Miller, born January 26, 1915. Residence: Kearney.


Fred Christian Siek

Born at Pleasant Dale, Nebraska, October 14, 1875, Fred Christian Siek is the son of Fred Christian and Johanna (Jess) Siek. His father was born at Osdorf, Kriess-Ekermforde, Germany, March 25, 1835, and came to America on August 15, 1865. Prior to his death at Pleasant Dale on June 27, 1913, he was a prominent farmer. His wife was also born in Osdorf, January 14, 1855, and died at Pleasant Dale August 17, 1917.

Fred C. Siek, Jr., was educated in the public and parochial schools of Seward County, and on December 15, 1899, was united in marriage to Dorthia Minnie Piening, at Emerald. Mrs. Siek, who is of German descent, was born at Emerald, July 12, 1877. They have six children: Hanna, born May 14, 1900, who married Richard Meusborn; Fred, born November 3, 1901, who married Verge Pool; Minnie, born August 27, 1904, who married Frank Ficke; Albert, born February 23, 1907, who married Malinda Lostrah; Amanda, born March 9, 1908, who married William Lintdner; and Ervin, born December 11, 1911, who is unmarried.

Mr. Siek is a Democrat and active in local politics. During the World War he was a member of the Nebraska Council of Defense and the Red Cross, and at the present time he is president of Bethany Evangelical Lutheran Church, which office he has held since 1923. From 1911-20, he was a director of school district No. 64, and recently he was awarded membership in the Nebraskana Society. Residence: Pleasant Dale.


Karl Friedrich Siemsen

Karl Friedrich Siemsen was born at Schleswig, Germany, April 9, 1873, and for the past 44 years has been a resident of Nebraska. His father, Henning Siemsen, who was a tavern keeper in Germany was born at Stabel, October 27, 1837, and came to America in 1887 where he engaged in farming; he died at Cedar Bluffs, Nebraska, December 27, 1910. His mother, Sophia Maria (Gefke) Siemsen, was born at Schleswig, April 7, 1835, and died at Cedar Bluffs, May 7, 1909.

Mr. Siemsen is engaged in the soda fountain business at Atkinson and is connected with the Atkinson Hatchery. He is a life member of the Red Cross, is president of O. D. H. S. Lodge Number 42, and holds membership in the Commercial Club. His political preference is the Democratic party.

His marriage to Bertha Albertine C. Ahrndt was solemnized at Scribner, Nebraska, December 30, 1903. Mrs. Siemsen, who is in business at Atkinson, was born at Scribner, September 29, 1884. They have five children Emma, born January 1, 1905, who is a registered nurse; Dora, May 12, 1906, who married Ted Wright, and who is a business woman; Sophia, born January 6, 1908, a teacher; Clara, born February 9, 1911; and Martin, born May 17, 1916 a student in high school. One son, Karl, ,who was born November 9, 1913, died August 7, 1931. Residence: Atkinson.


Herbert Dutton Silsby

Herbert Dutton Silsby, civic leader and banker at Bayard, Nebraska, was born near Mondamin, Iowa, July 4, 1873, the son of Russell Dutton and Marinda Brown (Mason) Silsby. His father, who was born at Middlesex, Vermont, April 8, 1829, and died at Little Sioux, Iowa, May 1, 1894, was a merchant and undertaker; of
