Government Inspection

Picture/label or sketchWE have just "cut" our last class in order that we might take plenty of time to shine up our rusty old fowling piece; we have just had the tattered rent sewed up in our antique army coat, which the last "guy" that used it left there before we bought the coat from John Uhl; we have just finished taking the grease spots out of our olive drab trousers received at camp last spring; we have just had our "cuss"

because some "guzabo" beat us to our new cartridge belt and left us a rotten rag in place. Now we are ready for Government Inspection.
It has long been true that the most rainy day possible is chosen for this much anticipated pleasure; so, we take it as a matter of course when we are ordered out on the campus for drill, with the rain pouring down in large "gobs," to go through our stunts before the stern and unmerciful eye of some regular army officer. After three hours of "right shoulder arms" and "squads left about" we are given five minutes to kick the mud off our yellow shoes and to shiver in our sopping uniforms. After this the pompous army gentleman usually asks its if we know our general orders. He takes delight in asking some poor half frozen guy this question just to see the look of horror come over his countenance when he does not know. This is Government Inspection. Amen!
