Mais Family

Henry Bernard Mais (I) was born in Germany in 1847. In the year 1870, at the age of 23, he and one of his brothers came to this country by boat. On the boat, they met twin sisters, one of whom was Elizabeth Hilderbrand, who was born in Germany in 1848, and was 22 years of age at this time. They came to Jordan, Minnesota and were married there and began their pioneer life together. His brother married the other Hilderbrand sister.
In 1872, a son, Bernard Henry Mais was born to the union. (He was to be one of eight living children born to Henry and Elizabeth Mais). After living in Minnesota about five years, they moved to Humphrey, Nebr. where they continued to farm, and in a few years they moved to Bellwood where Henry B. Mais (I) operated the first saloon in Bellwood. After two years, he sold this business and opened the first Meat Market in Bellwood which was located on the site of the present American Legion Hall. They lived in the first house east of this store. Their slaughter house was 3/4 miles north of town on the present Jerome Beringer homesite. The son, Bernard Henry, did all the livestock buying and slaughtering for the meat market in Bellwood, which at this time was just a small "starting" pioneer town. The country was being homesteaded and the Omaha Indians were still around and friendly, though bothersome at times, by their begging and pilfering, as supplies were scarce. At this time, Bernard Henry, being about 20 years old, met a pioneer girl named Sarah Alice "Smith" Irwin, an adopted daughter of Fred and Alice Irwin who were living on a homestead farm 2 3/4 miles northeast of Bellwood. (This land is presently owned by James Mick). They were married the day following Bernard's 21st birthday on November 16, 1893 at this homestead farm, by the Methodist Minister. Bernard started farming on this farm, and continued to help his father in the operation of the slaughter house. Two years later, in 1895, his father, being in failing health, sold the meat market and

slaughter house.
To Bernard and Sarah Mais the following children were born: Daisy Ester Mais - March 6, 1895, Henry Bernard Mais (II) - January 11, 1898, Frederick Alonzo Mais - December 9,1899. On September 16, 1913, Daisy married Will Nichols from St. Mary's, West Virginia. No children were born to this union. Daisy passed away October 11, 1965.
On October 1, 1919, Henry Bernard (II) married Mabel Potter of Ulysses, Nebraska. To this union three children were born: Lillian Mabel Mais born November 30, 1920, Garland Henry Mais born April 25, 1922, Maxine Daisy Mais born June 25, 1932.
Henry passed away June 15, 1971. His wife, Mabel, survives as of this date.
On September 5,1920, Frederick married Rose Blahak of Columbus, NE. No children were born to this union. Fred is retired and he and Rose presently live in Bellwood. They will have been married 60 years in October of this year. Fred is the last living member of this generation.

All of the descendants of Henry and Mabel Mais live in or very near the Bellwood area at the present time.
I end this Mais history with a quote from Fred Mais. Quote - "The wonderful pioneers had a code of honor that they believed in and each one lived by: It was respect of self, to be deserving of others, honesty, character, and to be industrious. May each of us strive to live by this same code, and pass it on to the next generation, that they may live by it, too.
