History: Palisades Township was a township that existed in Bergen County, New Jersey and was established on March 22, 1871 when Hackensack Township was subdivided into three new Townships. Englewood Township lasted just over fifty years, and was dissolved on March 11, 1922. Hackensack Township was divided into three parts, each stretching from the Hudson River on the west to the Hackensack River in the east: The northernmost portion was Palisades Township; The center strip was Englewood Township; and, The southernmost portion became Ridgefield Township. The new Township was quickly subdivided. The implementation by the New Jersey Legislature of a new Borough Act served to encourage the creation of new municipalities, most formed from portions of two (or more) Townships. Palisades Township survived for a half century after this new legislation, and the case of "Boroughitis" it fomented. In 1894, five boroughs were created from within Palisades Township (and portions of other townships, as indicated): Tenafly, Delford (later changed to Oradell; also included portions of Harrington Township), Cresskill (with a portion of Cresskill taken in 1903 to from Alpine), Bergenfield (also created from portions of Englewood Township) and Schraalenburgh (changed name to Dumont in 1928; also included portions of Harrington Township). In 1895, Englewood Cliffs was created from sections of both Englewood Township and Palisades Township. In 1898, a portion of Schraalenburgh was returned to Palisades Township. Demarest was formed in 1903 from portions of both Palisades and Harrington Townships.

History: Radburn was founded in 1929 as "a town for the motor age". Before 1841, the area comprising River Vale was part of Harrington Township. It used to be known as the "Over Kill Neighborhood" or just "Over Kill" — it being over the kill (Hackensack River) from Tappan. Its southern part, known as Eastwood (as opposed to Westwood), became an independent borough for a time in the 1890s, but was later re-absorbed.River Vale was incorporated as a Bergen County township in 1906. It was formed from portions of both Hillsdale and Washington Township. On July 15, 1929, part of River Vale became part of the town of Park Ridge. On May 20, 1959, territory was acquired from Montvale.In 1967, a mass grave site was discovered in River Vale from an event in 1778 during the American Revolutionary War, the Baylor Massacre. This became widely known due to a February 1968 report to the Bergen County Board of Chosen Freeholders, "1778 - The Massacre of Baylor's Dragoons". Facing suburban development, the burial site was made into a county park that was dedicated on October 15, 1972.

Rutherford was incorporated in 1881 under the Borough form of government. During the early days of settlement, the land that is now Rutherford was part of New Barbadoes Township, as Berry had lived in Barbados, another English colony, before claiming his grant in New Jersey. New Barbadoes was part of Essex County from 1693 to 1710, when Bergen County was formed. In 1826, the land became part of Lodi Township (of which today's remaining portion is Lodi borough). When Hudson County was formed in 1840, the area that is today North Arlington, Lyndhurst, Rutherford and East Rutherford became part of Harrison Township (of which today's remaining portion is Harrison town). However, the area reverted to Bergen County in 1852 and became known as Union Township.Part of the region was known as Boiling Springs, for the many hot springs in the vicinity.

Saddle River Township was one of the earliest townshipws within Bergen County. Several new townships had been partitioned off in the nineteenth century, and after 1894's Boroughitis craze, several boroughs (Glen Rock and Lodi in 1894; Wallington in 1895; Garfield in 1896; East Paterson in 1916-17; and Fair Lawn in 1924). The remaining portion of Saddle River Township was renamed as Saddle Brook, which adopted its current name by a referendum passed on November 8, 1955. The borough is named after the Saddle River, which flows through the borough and is a tributary of the Passaic River.

Teterboro was incorporated on March 26, 1917 from land taken from the boroughs of Moonachie and Little Ferry and from Lodi Township. The borough was enlarged in 1918 by the addition of area annexed from Hasbrouck Heights. On March 4, 1919 it acquired area from Lodi Township. The name Teterboro was changed in 1937 to Bendix Borough, and changed back to Teterboro Borough on June 1, 1943. In the past, neighboring municipalities, such as Hasbrouck Heights and South Hackensack, have attempted to absorb Teterboro, hoping to reap the financial benefits (and lower property taxes) of doing so. Others have reasoned that the population is too small for the borough to justify its own existence. However, all such attempts have met with failure, due to resistance from residents and municipal officials.

On the eve of the American Revolutionary War, Waldwick and the surrounding area constituted a small settlement within Franklin Township, and are that encompassed much of northwestern Bergen County. As the township grew in the years following the war, the western portion of Franklin Township broke away and named itself Orvil Township, in honor of its chief surveyor. Not long after, the Erie Railroad created a stop in the township, bringing about the first major population boom in the region's history. Still later, around the 1870s, the area constituting modern-day Ridgewood broke away from Orvil; not too long afterwards, Orvil Township as an independent municipality began to fade. On April 7, 1919, a council of citizens voted to incorporate as the borough of "Waldwick" (A Light in the Woods), from the remaining portions of Orvil Township. With the creation of the borough of Waldwick, Orvil Township was dissolved.

"In 1669, lord proprietors Sir George Carteret and Lord John Berkeley awarded a land grant to Capt. John Berry. The territory extended approximately from Hackensack to Newark between the Hackensack, Passaic, and Saddle Rivers. At the time, the Lenni Lenape Indians inhabited the area. The tract was gradually divided into farms, and by the early 1700s, the area that is now Wood-Ridge began to appear in county records. An old Indian trail extending from the northern part of Bergen County to points south was laid out by Berry as a roadway c. 1707. Named Polifly Road, it is now known in Wood-Ridge as Hackensack Street.""The land became part of the township of New Barbadoes. In 1825, when Lodi Township was formed, it split off from New Barbadoes. Wood-Ridge and its surrounding areas became a part of Lodi Township. Wood-Ridge was an area used as a hunting ground by the Indians. Artifacts found in the vicinity lead historians to believe that the Indians inhabited land closer to the surrounding rivers."

Woodcliff Lake is also the name of the reservoir that lies primarily within the town--a small part of it lies in neighboring Hillsdale. The borough was originally incorporated as Woodcliff, on August 31, 1894, at the height of the Boroughitis phenomenon sweeping through Bergen County at the time. It was formed from parts of Orvil Township and Washington Township, as under state law at the time, boroughs formed from parts of two different townships were allowed a chosen freeholder. On March 1, 1910, after the creation of the reservoir, the name of the borough was changed to Woodcliff Lake, to match the name of the post office. In this era prior to ZIP codes, two post offices in a state could not have the same name, and there was already a "Woodcliff" in Hudson County. On January 1, 1956 and again on July 1, 1958, Woodcliff Lake exchanged sections of land with Park Ridge. On October 13, 1960 portions were exchanged with Hillsdale.

What is today Wyckoff was part of Saddle River Township, which included all of Bergen County west of the Saddle River. Saddle River Township was split up in 1771 with the area containing Wyckoff becoming Franklin Township. By 1755, about 100 families lived in the Franklin Township area, of which, no more than 20 were in what is now Wyckoff. Franklin Township (1771) consisted of what is today Ho-Ho-Kus (seceded 1849), Ridgewood (seceded 1876), Midland Park (seceded 1894), Oakland (seceded 1902), Franklin Lakes (seceded 1922), and Wyckoff. The size of Franklin Township decreased as areas seceded and were incorporated into their own towns. After Franklin Lakes was established in 1922, Franklin Township consisted of only the area known locally as Wyckoff. On November 2, 1926, residents voted (243 positive votes out of 337) to change the name from Franklin Township to the Township of Wyckoff. In 1931, part of Wyckoff was transferred to Midland Park.
